I've based my selection on end product against expectation for the money paid. There are a number of others but these are the five that came to mind.

Can’t argue with this. 

Luke Varney has a golden pass as he scored winning goals against Palace.

Same for Rommedahl, Todorov and Kitson. 

And Matt Spring.

Any 5 simply have to be from the early days of the Roland era.

Rommedahl was a big disappointment but certainly not in the Top 5 worst signings

With the reputation he came with  I think he was. Lazy player too. Wycombe cup game always springs to mind. 

For me worst signings is different to worst players, so I'm basing mine on the negative effect they had on the club when they signed.

Amdy Faye - Dowie was right that we needed a combative midfielder. Why he picked just about the worst one going with a proven track record of being crap in the Premier League I will never know. Was a key part of the 'overspend on crap' policy that has ultimately led us to where we are now by crippling our finances while relegating us. Probably the number one in terms of the effect it had on us long-term. Nearly £3m he was!

Piotr Parzyszek - Ostensibly the replacement for Yann. Yann! The frustrating thing is he came relatively highly recommended because Sporting were apparently in for him, but he wasn't anywhere near capable of playing in the Championship and we barely survived by the skin of our teeth, which he contributed nothing to. One of the first signings that truly encapsulated the Roland method of selling our best players and replacing them with work experience kids.

Reza - The Champions League level player we were told we would get from our partnership with Standard. Reza was supposedly not quite good enough to be playing regularly at the top of the Belgian first division, but more than good enough to cause some serious damage in the Championship. With players like him signing we would be strolling out of relegation trouble. Not only was he rubbish, he couldn't care less most of the time and threw himself on the floor every time a player looked in his direction. Culminated in him getting sent off once because he felt like it. Bell.

Roger Johnson (pt.2) - While we were drowning in relegation mire we brought back a player we had decided had been helpful but not quite good enough to stay the previous season, with him a year older and having struggled to look good in India. We ended up bringing in six (SIX!) defenders in that transfer window period because it was clear about 30 seconds into Big Roge's comeback that he wasn't going to cut it. The relegation to League One that followed was unsurprising, so was him swearing at the fans for being unhappy with his soul-destroying performances.

Martin Cranie - Possibly my least favourite ever Charlton player, epitomised the tail end of the Pardew reign. I despised a lot of defenders we had around that time, but Cranie was everything bad about Pardew's transfer strategy: bring in players with 'potential' (Cranie was 21, is now 32 and has played for 11 different clubs, with no-one willing to pay a fee for him since 2009) on loan who couldn't really care less either way if the club went down or not. We made 11 loan signings that season, which just laid out Pardew's panic stricken inability to man manage once things had started going sideways. He played 19 dreadful times and then buggered off before January leaving us to replace him and too much to do to save ourselves.

Honourable mentions to: Patrick McCarthy (cart horse when we should have been looking to bounce back), Andy Gray (mitigating circumstances there, but Jesus..), Hasselbaink (fat useless lump hoovering up money), Rhys Williams (like Roger Johnson but less offensive), Ricardo Vaz Te (skinny Jimmy-Floyd in terms of product, but even Jimmy managed a goal.)

I feel bad for Borrowdale making these lists. We had no money and we brought in a player, apparently out of Parky's pocket, who filled in the left back spot and gave us a bit of stability. Given the fact that the level of player we could afford was whatever the manager made after tax, he was as good as he could possibly have been, he worked hard and he meant we at least finally had a LB. Just look at the Oxford match to see how much it can hurt not having a specialist player in that position. He wasn't good, but I think he improved us more than he hindered given the circumstances. I'd actually say he was a good signing.

Terrible memories returning here, many of which my mind had blanked out to ease the pain. I think my worst five are adequately represented  but struggle to see how anyone can include Rommedahl, Spector or Bartlett. Rommedahl was a disappointment but hardly a 'worst' candidate. Spector improved with experience and Bartlett was outstanding. All three competed in the top flight when we have a back catalogue of ineptitude at lower division level. Dowie was guilty of a slew of hurried big money signings of players not capable of Premiership quality but my five worsts would all come from the steaming pile of cack we have been handed under Duchatelet. 

I still laugh when I think about Christophe LePoint - I remember he came off the bench and just ran about like a loon never getting anywhere near the ball! That was 900K well spent! 

Whenever anybody doubts if he could have made it as a professional, just think of Thuram. Playing for Charlton when he did was just down to chance, luck and being able to tie bootlaces. (Also having a delusional owner that thinks he’s a reincarnation of Alan Turing helps)

Didn't Curbs try and sign Faye and Traore in the January but couldn't get the deals over the line?
