  • I understood the marquee signings to apply if we ever reach the premiership.

It's always best to go for marquee signings in the prem.
Man city made all their marquee signings when they were in the prem.

Have a look at clubs that have made marquee signings outside of the prem.
It usually never ends very well.
I understood it that the fella from Peterborough was called Mark Key.

I understand everyone's frustration on not signing anyone yet, but they have been in charge 20 days, they/we have to look at the bigger picture and not be held to ransom on fees/wages. After tonight we have 9 days to get in the people we need, assess where our injured players are in terms of returning and fitness. I will look to see a few good Championship signings by 31/1/20, and then see what unfurls over the last part of the season. If we can stay up, and I believe we can, then lets judge them on the summer transfer window and the business conducted then, after-all  they have said they want to see us pushing for the play-offs in 20/21, well we will need a very healthy and competitive squad to do that, and that'll be down to what ESI invest.

Why did MS have to mention Manchester City in his interview , it's then no surprise why wage demands go up. He's given the impression we are wealthy when the reality maybe is that we are not
  • On record of having a five year plan to get to the Premier League which by any standard is very ambitious. They didn’t have to say anything about a five year plan but chose to do so and have therefore increased both expectations and pressure. Naive or confident ? I’m guessing and hoping that we will see some half decent signing over next couple of weeks and providing relegation can be avoided the summer will tell us all we need to know.

Now Bowyer is signed I am so much happier, in fact after that performance tonight I am just feeling so much better.

Players coming back, the seniors starting to look like their old selves, and Cullen, he just steadies the defence so much.

So I'm all chill again.... #bipolar

People need to take a deep breath and regain their composure.

It's got to the point where I've seen four or five different posters make up random quotes in the last 24hrs that makes ESI sounds like Roland Mk II. When you look at the actual source, it says nothing of the sort.

"League one wouldn't be a disaster" turned out to be "we have a contingency plan in case of relegation" for which I'm glad to know we wouldn't be up the creek without a paddle & "I will make a decision the fans won't like in February" is actually "if i have to make business decisions that fans don't like, so be it" and I'm thinking where did February come from???
Yep. the Marquee signings bit has been massively taken out of context too. when he said the phrase "there will be marquee signings" it was in the context of Lyle's contract offer and talking about 'the model'. He was accepting that there are players worth breaking the model for - in fact he was saying there are some players you have to break the model for to get or keep hold of. It was at this point he mentioned Shearer at Newcastle when Bowyer was there - he implied that he was on a significantly higher wage than the rest of the squad but that worked because he was a "marquee player".

At no point did Matt say anything about "there will be marquee signings" in reference to this window.

People have taken that out of context and massively overdone their expectations.
Matt Southall said "there will be marquee signings, there will be players for whom we need to go over and above if we feel they will strengthen the team".  But the words he used immediately before this were "The players we're trying to bring in now...".

So, it's right that he did not, specify that marquee signings would be made in the current transfer window, he did preface the "marquee signing" comment with the the word "now".

"Now" might not mean in this current window.  But, I am struggling to work out what it does mean, if not.

It’s the elephant in the room (not a camel).

Everyone is staring at their shoes, not wanting to be the bold one to face it, but sometimes you just need to take a deep breath, shoulders back and face the truth...

We need to say goodbye to the Takeover Thread.

It feels like one of the family, an almost perminent piece of furniture in our Charlton Life lives. We’ve shared laughs, tears, tingles and a lot of fish.

Monday at 10pm we will close the thread for the final time. Not temporary because of something libellous or two middle age wallies are threatening a pillow fight, but for good. Ah Revior, Auf Weidesen, Goodbye.

Lets make the last two days of the takeover thread a happy period of mirth and celebration. A nostalgic look back to the good times, the highlights, the fish puns.

    What’s been your highlights?
