    Weirdly I saw a years old rumour the other day that he used to be allowed in the rear entrance (no pun intended) of Buckingham Palace to "visit" a royal, and thought that turned out to be bollocks considering he's been married for years.

    Shows how it was often easier to hide being gay (whether the above is true or not) for that generation, and how far we've come.

    I'm guessing one of the tabloids had a story on him they were maybe going to run and he's been given the opportunity to speak first.

    Hardly a shock - I've always thought he was gay. Sad that he's felt the need to hide it for so long.

    I don't think that's the case. I am in the TM production office today, sounds like this was in the pipeline for a while. Everyone here is giving him applause when he walks past which is nice.

    After 27 years of marriage for your husband to then say he is gay can't have been easy.

    For some one of his generation and married for so long, it’s still really tough. Especially as he clearly thinks the world of his wife, even if he isn’t sexually attracted to her.

    I imagine that for most of his years of marriage he felt he was 100% (or largely) straight, maybe it took him a long time to realise

    It's not as if he needed to keep it a secret for his career, as thankfully it's not an issue now.

    For your average person I agree but sadly a lot of people still do. Was watching 999 what's your emergency last night which was all about hate crimes. Lots of homophobic abuse going on.
