Jonny Williams - now at Gillingham (p47)

  • Good news. Williams is more important than Taylor in my opinion
And Cullen is more important than them both.

I actually think it's more about how replacements have or haven't stepped up than who is most influential. Earlier in the season most people couldn't see us scoring without Taylor. I remember going into the leads game expecting to lose and saying "if we score a goal to show we can score without Lyle that's a positive". At that point Leko was unconvincing, Hemed nowhere and Bonne not ready. Since then Bonne has stepped up magnificently, Leko and Gallagher have also chipped in with goals meaning we haven't missed Taylor as much as we might have.

With Jonny we obviously miss him hugely. He's key to us. We haven't really had a replacement for him. Ozzy has looked good at times (excellent against Cardiff etc.) And less good at others and is now injured. Aneke is another option in the 10 role but has vanished. We tried Gallagher in that role but we lost something by not having him on the left of the diamond just getting everywhere. Morgan/Doughty are both young and different types of players.

Likewise Cullen. He's so key to the way we play linking the lines and just keeping us tick. Kayal could do this role he impressed at Bristol City but didn't look too convincing in other games and seems to have got lost on the way back from Israel. Field is another who could have adapted to this role but got a freak injury. Even Lapslie/JFC could do a job in this role but have been out. Morgan may actually be our best bet here but it's a slightly different role to what hes played previously and this creates a gap further up the pitch.

So we miss Williams and Cullen more due to no replacement and no one stepping up.

A fully fit Jonny Williams might be the best player in the Championship.
  • We have really missed all three in Williams, Taylor and Cullen and are lucky that Bonne has to an extent stepped up to the plate as good as he has been Lyle adds more and Ossie has been good but too many injuries to cover Jonny Williams but is not at Jonny Williams level ,no one has adequately replaced Josh. We all know that with them all fit we are a good team that why I am not too worried about our current plight as we will get better.

About 6 months ago for some he was an underwhelming player with no end product.

Now he’s the best player in the Championship?

For me he’s up there, but there must be others that can do what he does and also score goals.
  • Bowen @ Hull has got 15 goals from midfield this season i think, he'd give Jonny a run for his money.

    Different type of player though

Is Bowen not an out and out striker?

Think more of an inside forward

Excellent, I can't wait for Johnny to smash in 15 in the second half of the season.
  • Some of the garbage on here takes me back 10 years or so when people were saying our midfield pairing of Semedo and Racon was the best in the division.

Williams is a good championship player but made of glass, hence why he is playing for a struggling championship club.

Nowt as blind or delusional as some Charlton fans

Not sure he's quite that bad.  Not a lot of muscle on him but I think the biggest issue is his pace and skill.  Most teams just cannot cope with him and hack him down with very little protection by referees meaning he's always vulnerable to injury.  As for a struggling championship club....we're mainly struggling because he hasn't been playing...!

And there's plenty on the politics threads.

Jonno's attitude is everything you want in a pro footballer.

If he can reach that 100% match fitness soon, plus with returning players and promised new signings, the strong dressing room will do the rest.

Love Johnny. Probably my favourite current player. Grounded, intelligent, humble, and very talented.  All the attributes to be a Charlton legend if he sticks around and finds his best form again. I was encouraged by his sub appearance last week. Within a few minutes he was scurrying past a defender with the ball at his feet and tried a slide rule through ball that very nearly got Doughty in behind their defence. It didn't look like he'd lost any pace or that there was any hesitancy from him. Not long after that West Brom paid him the compliment he's become accustomed to by realizing they would basically have to foul him to stop him. Suggested he could be back 'at it' fairly quickly and we have really missed his creativity. I think we need to see our other players sticking up for him more on the pitch - getting in the ref's ear about persistent fouling and perhaps taking out the odd bit of retribution on Johnny's behalf.

Is the extra year contract option our choice or his? Desperate to get him signed up for a couple more years.

I’m not sure, I don’t know if it’s triggered if he reaches a certain amount of appearances?

Almost as comical as him pulling his hamstring doing a fresh air shot.

Missed him on the pitch against Rovers.
  • Too injury prone, we should release him at the end of the season.

Have we ever had a player who's suffered more frequent injuries?
