Riga himself commented when he came for the second time how the spirit that he'd seen before had disappeared. That was down to Powell.
And if Riga was a better manager than Powell why did he fail 2nd time round?

The rug was pulled by cash but Duchatelet cost us a semi final place and it was largely Powell's players that kept us up under Riga - who I have nothing but praise for btw.
There is absolutely no question that Chris Powell is a Charlton legend, but his abilities as a manager are questionable.
We had all this at the time. People moaning that we were playing poor football under Powell, but totally unable to understand that you can't play Brazil 1970 football on a pitch like a ploughed field with a bargain basement squad.

Parkinson (League Cup Finalist with Bradford, promotion to League One and the Championship, the latter with Bolton)
Pardew (FA Cup Finalist)
Putting Parkinson above Pardew simply because I think achieving a Cup Final with Bradford is a lot bigger of an achievement than getting there with a Premier League side
I'd then say the rest are all the same, successive clubs all roughly at the same level, none have won promotion, none have set the world alight
Of course if Robinson can get Oxford into the Championship then he joins Parkinson and Pardew but no others have really stood out0 -

By calling someone ignorant for having a difference in opinion to one you have is ignorance in itself.
Plenty of people on here have questioned Powell's ability as a manager and they are all ignorant apparently.
There are certain people, be it players, managers, fans etc accocisated with Charlton that some some fans insist should be treated almost godly. There is absolutely no question that Chris Powell is a Charlton legend, but his abilities as a manager are questionable.
For me there are very few ‘great’ managers. Luck, context, stability, timing etc all have a massive role to play in making a manager. Successful doesn’t mean great. But Powell, as our manager, was very successful, so he must have been doing something right.4 -

Kept Huddersfield in the Championship who I’m sure would have had one of the smaller budgets at the time. As his replacement overachieved Powell’s seen as having done a bad job there, but another manager may have taken them down.
Didn’t work out at Southend. Not sure what sort of budget he had there, but I’d imagine it would be mid table at best.
He was good for us and had either of the two ownerships he worked for gave him a budget to invest in the squad and keep the likes of Yann and Stephens then I think he’d have put together a squad that would have at least competed in the Championship with a chance of overachieving.
He likely won’t have another season like 11/12 again but he was the right manager at the right time for us and had the summer of 2012 worked out differently a decent budget and the momentum we had could have seen the progress under him continue.A missed opportunity even if he never experiences success as a manager again.
That was despite Murray giving both Dowie and Pardew more money than Curbs ever got!
Some people just don't know when they are well off unfortunately.2 -

There were plenty on here that were scathing about Parky too as I recall.1 -
The other thing is, Powell is no longer our manager, he hasn't been for a long time, and to create a thread like this is bollocks and disrespectful. What is the point of it?2
