Atmosphere at grounds

Was at Uni in the late 1980's in Liverpool. The Kop was amazing then, and amazing to watch Charlton play there and lose unfortunatley. Great atmosphere and £3.5 to get in.Everton not so good against Charlton, but saw great atmospheres against Villa and Arsenal - we also beat them at Easter in that period.Wigan - how many have you been to Springfield Park? Saw Wolves play them there, must have been 400 Wigan and 4000 Wolves fans at that game.Man Utd singing anti-Fergie songs back then.2

Nothing I’ve experienced has been worse than MK Dons. Though it has been run close by the new Colchester stadium, as well as Wigan
Fulham is bad, but at least the stadium has a bit of character.
Best atmosphere I’ve been part of on an away day was Sheffield United in the FA Cup. Obviously not the way we wanted it to be, but that place went absolutely bezerk when their goals went in.cafctom said:MillwallFan said:IR94 said:MillwallFan said:Todds_right_hook said:MillwallFan said:best...

3/ spurs (only been once, was expecting something special. Was disappointed)
4/ Gillingham
5/ Charlton. And not just putting that because we got a mention above. Nicknamed The Valium by our fans. Have sat in the away end on many occasions and barely heard a peep from the home stands, in what is a local derby. Very strange.
https://youtu.be/TQPSI0fXqcsAs an aside, someone on Millwall online once claimed that Charlton have never sold out the home ends in a London Derby outside the PL, surely that can’t be right? Not sure if the original poster was fishing for a bite but the amount of fans from other clubs I’ve spoken to who always mention the unique atmosphere at the den. A Leeds mate said they love coming to the Den because of the old school atmosphere (he also described the valley as ‘gods waiting room’). For all our faults, the one thing we’re good at is creating a noise from a relatively small sized crowd.0 -
Keep in mind we’ve spent half the time in League One since we came back down from the Premiership.
Three of the Championship seasons in that time have been relegation seasons, so casual fans aren’t as invested.
However, whatever people might say about our atmosphere - I do think we’ve done more than any club in the land on the protest front on certain matchdays. So much so that it has made headlines in major news outlets. Can’t say that for many clubs.2 -

I reckon even we could have sold out that number over the years on certain occasions, especially v West Ham and palace, and even v yourselves at times. We quite often sell out at home v the likes of QPR and Brentford as well, or at least get close to it. We love a local one at Millwall. Away from home in London we always sell out. I’ve seen us play away in London scores of times and we always sell out. Even at the likes of Leyton Orient and Dagenham. I’ve seen us take 7 odd thousand to palace when they gave us the whole of the Arthur Waite stand and not far off that to Fulham when we had the whole of the away end and also filled the neutral section.0 -
When it comes to London derbies/big matches, we’ll always sell out an away allocation.
And I’d back us to be louder than 90% of other away supports in those scenarios too.
The most hardcore of our support take some beating on their day.0 -

The most hardcore of our support take some beating on their day. This season just gone I remember you was really loud on a couple of occasions early on in the game but after that I wouldn’t say you was that loud to be honest. Not a dig, just an observation.Leeds was the best who came to us last season and always make plenty of noise. That marching on together, got to hand it to them, great chant and gets bloody loud when they all do it. Our games v them always have a derby feel to them. Even though it’s not a derby. The atmosphere is always immense from both sides.0 -

Let’s be honest fans are hardly gonna be “up” for it when we come to town .
Yes we love our club but I’m sure as dull as we see a Huddersfield fixture that’s what we are to most clubs outside some local rivalries .
most grounds will have had brilliant and shit atmospheres when we’ve been there at points in the game
lets not go anywhere with the away support bollox , apart from the last couple or so seasons where with a play off/play off promotion and a bit of new ground action our numbers have been abysmal and some of the turnouts in the Premier League away days were shameful , we didn’t sell out West Ham, Spurs on the odd occasion and they weren’t massive away ends at the time .
Its when a club has been in the same league for a while and the same old fixtures churn out that you see the real hardcore.
anyway lovely to be back slagging off our shit away support again .5 -

Sheffield United has a similar vibe to the Valley. I see our atmosphere as a rocket. Bloody hard to start but if you manage it, take a step back. Sorry for how this sounds but Newcastle may have an atmosphere but it is full of Geordies so doesn't count.2

For me, Newcastle at the old St James' Park was consistently the best. Fearsome place, especially when you had a tiny away following in the corner and next to you, you had that pitch-length terrace down one side, in front of the main stand. That was a wall of noise when they attacked down that flank.
The best ever for me was Manchester City away in 1985, when we lost 5-1 in front of 47,000. People packed into every nook and cranny and you couldn't hear yourself think under that big Kippax roof, as all those goals flew in!
But any of the old grounds with a big crowd were good. Liverpool, Everton, Sheff Wed, Manchester Utd, Spurs, Chelsea, West Ham were always good. Of the smaller grounds Derby County at The Baseball Ground, Millwall at the Old Den and Leicester City at Filbert Street were up there for me.
I don't really get anything like the same feeling with all-seater stadia, although the Doncaster play-off semi at The Valley was an exception. That's the best atmosphere I've experienced at the all-seater Valley.5 -

Could be wrong but I seem to recall the atmosphere at St James Park in the 92/93 season being electric. It was a midweek game and Keegan’s Toon Army were heading for promotion. Goals from Nelse and Carlo secured us a draw but IIRC we were getting battered but managed to secure a point.
Filbert Street was a favourite ground for me when it came to atmosphere, hemmed in at the side, close to the pitch and their more vocal fans situated in the corner behind the goal. Proper ground.
Loathe to admit it but Elland Road is pretty impressive when it’s rocking. During our PL stint I sat in the home end and found it both exhilarating and a little bit scary. I sat on my hands when Alex Dyer scored our consolation in a 3-1 defeat.2 -
nowadays unfortunately, the atmosphere depends on who has the best sound engineers and P A system0

Dont think any of the new/refurbished stadiums compare with the old as regards atmosphere(possible exeption of Anfield).West Ham at Upton Park,Sunderland At Roker Park, very noisy,The old Den in the 60s was a bit hairy.
You now have the singers and chanters usually compacted in one area, leaving much of the rest of the stadia pretty sedate.(I.E. East and West Stand).
Have fond memories of doing the rounds in my teens, and attending games at all the other London clubs when you could just turn up,Atmosphere at some of the big games,Chelsea-Leeds,Spurs -Arsenal was really electric.0 -

The old den had a far better atmosphere than the new den.
Leeds fans whenever they come are consistently the most vocal.
I'm afraid that for all their victories and numbers Millwall have been no better than average at the Valley.
As for away fans saying we are quiet at the Valley it is a lot about acoustics and architecture as to how the sound carries.0 -

https://fanbanter.co.uk/average-away-attendance-for-every-championship-club-in-the-2019-20-season/
Took 12th most in average away attendance, surprised Millwall was so low in 21st1 -
Having been to over 120 grounds all I will say is that:
1. As a Charlton fan we rarely see another clubs fans at their best as we’re an unattractive fixture to 90%
2. Most clubs can create a racket on special occasions. Even us vs Donny last year.
3. I think it matters hugely where the away support are positioned. At Millwall you have the two most vocals areas either side of you. At the Valley you’re miles away from our vocal support etc.
4. The clubs who really retain that higher percentage of working class vocal support are the ones where all four sides of the ground can take off on the right occasions - the likes of Millwall, Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield, Pompey, Everton, etc still have it. We are not and never have been one of them. Even Cardiff have been decimated by the new ground /prem football and Msn City and West Ham are a shadow of there former selves but it’s still there on the one off occasions.
5. Our support has changed dramatically for the better the last few years. May it continue.
5. Best I’ve heard and they’re all impacted by occasion except number 1:
1. Pompey - a nothing middle of the road prem game many moons ago, I think it finished 2-2 in the Di Canio era. They did not shut up all game. Never forget that one.
2. Birmingham in 98 last game of season - Keep Right On. Still don’t think I’ve heard anything compare.
3. Sheff U in the Cup quarter final recently - all four sides going at it.
4. Millwall - you can’t deny it and it is because it’s a big game to them. Believe me it does not rock like that very often. As an aside didn’t you get 12k against West Ham in 2004??Additionally - I’ve been to two old firms at both Ibrox and Celtic Park, both in the Rangers end and was far from impressed each time.
Special mention to the Jocks though for the loudest single noise I’ve ever heard at a game, when they scored those two fee kicks in quick succession at Hampden a few years back - Wow!! We did shut them up in injury time though 😀9 -

OT is largely dead when you’re in the away end but there are thousands singing away in the Stratford end but the noise does not travel.0
