Today, 16 years we relegated the palice buggers.

What a fantastic day.  If I live another 30 years I am certain this will be in my top five games watching Charlton.

Unfortunately considering how things turned around for the nigels and us in the subsequent decade, this match doesnt do it for me anymore. If the deal with the devil was to beat palace on this one day but you'll spend a lot of the next 15 years in L1 and they will be in the prem I don't think Id take it.

Surely we’ve had many many better days than this from which we can take pleasure in our performance ?  As someone else said, they’ve been significantly better than us for most of the 16 years since .

Indeed they have but where is the harm in bringing this great day up and bringing a smile to people’s faces on a Saturday morning.

Its all about the big memorable days that is what you follow football for, and this was definitely one to enjoy remembering and watching back.

16 years and he still hasn’t moved out of that penalty area.

I remember being at London Bridge station a few years later when we were playing them at home in a night game and charlton were heading in one direction (down) and palace were heading in the other direction and their fans were singing ‘who’s fucking laughing now’ to the same tune...and I realised I was, still, and even more so as their chant made me realise how much it must have still been hurting them...

the view that this game needs to be viewed in the context of what has subsequently happened is surely missing the point? We won at Wembley in 47, 98 and 19 - we could look at all of those wins in the context of what happened after but why would you? One of my favourite Charlton moments was Villa Park in 99 - the fact that we were relegated a week later doesn't detract from the experience of the win...

Lets rejoice - we sent Palace down by beating not losing to them in a specific game. They have never sent us down. We are the winners.

Wow......and just how has relegating them gone for the 2 respective clubs...??  Have they yo-yo'd between the 2nd & 3rd tiers of English football & had to put up with playing in the tin-pot Pizza trophy, whilst we have had 10 years of Premiership football & having full stadiums every week.

    Er, No.

Really dont get this love of "we sent the Palace down". For me it's been once disaster after another since that day.

    We stole their manager
    We got relegated
    We got relegated again
    We got promoted
    We got relegated again
    We got promoted
    We got relegated again.

Plus shit owner after shit owner (until Sangaard).

You are right. And another thing, look at us versus Burnley. We go on about beating them in the Cup Final, but look whats happened since - we've been up and down more than a whores drawers and they have ended up in the Premier League.

Not having a dig at anyone who still gets a kick out of this game, but Im not going to be bragging to my palace supporting mates about how we relegated them in 2005 when they had nearly 10 years uninterrupted in the prem and an FA cup final appearance since.

In 1905 a group of teenagers formed Charlton Athletic Football Club.

Thousands of fans have suffered since through a lifetime of misery and torture.

Be careful what you wish for.

Two things worry me about this post.
    1. You have palarse mates.
    2. You are willing to admit it in public.

A great day..remember going mental when we scored, especially considering the disappointment of conceding the penalty.
But I agree with others , this has now been superseded by 10 years of crap and worse living in their shadow!

who cares what happened in the following years. Football and sport is all about the moment.

Imagine if in 2005 we beat say Man City in the cup final. Would people be saying don’t rate that day as look at us in league one whilst Man City went on to 5 prem leagues / fa cups?

    Madness.

We relegated one of our biggest rivals.
    It was great.
