I take it you didn’t watch the Scotland game. We were paralysed by fear. If England set up not to lose which seems to be Southgates MO then the Germans will find it easy.Six-a-bag-of-nuts said:l think we have a talented bunch who should feel confident that they have enough about them to win this game and progress.
I'd like to think they are not affected by any historic legacy of fear, or "beaten before we kick a ball" mentality that infests some older English football fans.
They are not playing history, they are playing in this game in the here and now.
That said, the German's seem to have a knack of finding a way to win, even when not playing particularly well or when not blessed with an array of star talent.
It is going to be tough, but I hope the players can step up to the plate and as Gareth said, make their own history.
Just please, don't go to penalties2 -
They are different players - Rice is more sit and pass and Henderson, whilst a holding midfielder brings attackers into play and attacks himself. If you are playing Henderson and Phillips you ought to get the best of both worlds. Rice can play with two attacking midfielders but it is a bit of a waste having him with another holding player. It often just becomes an extra pass.Garrymanilow said:I'm always confused by the people who get upset about the idea of playing Rice and Henderson together as if they're the same kind of player. Rice is the deep defensive midfielder who can take the ball forward when needed and Henderson is there to sit deep and recycle the ball, much like how it works at Liverpool, but in place of Rice Fabinho is there to break up play. Liverpool actually play with three midfielders who are comfortable sitting deeper, and they rely a lot on their talented wide players and exceptional full backs. A lot like England in fact. Rice and Henderson in a 4-3-3 is fine, and as long as we're pushing the wing backs forwards a lot and utilising the two men playing off Kane intelligently it will be fine in a 3-4-3 or similar0 -
I added them on after I first did it. We did win it in 90 minutes, then won it again. That's what Ramsey saidsupaclive said:

Like most people it seems I'm getting really nervous already. What a victory tonight could potentially do for the country in terms of feelgood factor is massive. Personally I think the facts tonight are very clear. We are the better team in terms of individuals. If they play with freedom and without fear then I honestly cant see us losing. If we go into our shell and try to be defensive and frightened of making mistakes then we lose as that will play into Germanys hands. They are aging and slow in most areas, play with high intensity and progressive they will not be able to live with us1

Always felt the Scotland game was sensibly treated as a game that had to be gotten out of the way... One that we shouldnt have let the players treat as a typical derby game with "must not lose" the primary message given to them.ShootersHillGuru said:

We certainly didnt need to get pointless bookings with players flying into challenges or needless injuries.
Lyndon Dykes himself said that he clattered into Shaw early on, which to him showed that England werent interested in the battle - Yeah because we had visions on getting further into the Tournament rather than turning a pointless game into a fight.0 -
Nerves are kicking in now. I think this is the biggest game since Euro 96 purely because the way the draw has opened up, if England can win this we could make the final

The Scotland game was different. It was effectively a league match and a draw was all that was needed. Our results/performances against Czech Rep. and Croatia look much better in the context of those two teams last two matches. France and Spain played open attacking football in their round of 16 matches and one got knocked out and the other had an almighty scare. There’s a balance to be struck, but England need to do only one thing today - win.The way the draw has worked out, and with Netherlands, Portugal and France already gone, plus Germany if England do win, there is a huge opportunity here for everyone left in the competition. I think France were the ones everyone feared so now every team left will fancy they have a chance - there’s no one left who aren’t beatable.
Would be silly to risk that opportunity by being too open - Germany can hurt England if we allow them to, but keeping it tight and using our pace and energy on the counter is probably our best way to hurt them.0 -

LOL. Come on, that's a ridiculous exaggeration.ShootersHillGuru said:

Granted I will certainly be hoping for more from our forward players in this game.
With Scotland I think the performances are always a little skewed by it being their cup final.
Whilst we haven't been free flowing, we have shown some neat play in patches and we have players that can hurt the opposition.
Just maybe Gareth has found a way to win games, that doesn't expose our defenders.
We'll see I guess.2 -
My son has just arrived at Wembley Way and said it is already pretty packed. I suppose there are a number of early entry slots that have been given out.

Going back to the knockout games conversation, here’s a pretty graphic…

Didn’t find a way to win that one though did he.Six-a-bag-of-nuts said:

We didn't play a knockout game between 68 and 96!?0

Surely if England had beaten Croatia in 2018 they would have made the final (of a World Cup no less) too?Gravesend_Addick said:Nerves are kicking in now. I think this is the biggest game since Euro 96 purely because the way the draw has opened up, if England can win this we could make the final2 -

I am no fan of Southgate, I could forgive the penalty miss but not the profiteering through the adverts after and the fact he’s Palace
At the end of the day he’s trying to get England to a major final and I feel we are better equipped under him than anyone since El Tel in 96 to do so.
What? A lot?I have bitten my tongue so far but if we lose and they start gloating I may be looking for a new team as I am not a good loser( not a good trait for a Charlton fan).Does give me the right hump!!1 -

Our pedigree is... poor1 -
Most of that was before I was born but genuinely didn't realise we were that bad. Surprised considering club successes in Europe.Callumcafc said:sinking feesh said:We didn't play a knockout game between 68 and 96!?Euros only. Our record has been quite abysmal..92 - out at group stage (8 teams)

To be clear I don’t spend any time other than playing football with them. I spend any other time with fellow long suffering Charlton fans and the odd Millwall supporter who know I am now immune to their gloating.MStuartPerm said:

30mins or so before we see the line ups.
Nervous but buzzing0 -
Even the 3-1 against Spain is a bit disingenuous IMO. That was more like a home & away two legged qualifier in April to get our foot in the door of the actual tournament.
We beat Spain 1-0 at Wembley, followed by a 2-1 win at the Bernabeu to advance to the finals on aggregate.0 -
I was confident but the closer it gets the quicker my heart pumping , just need the game to start and a quick 3-0 lead and then I can relax1

So, if social media is to be believed (and I haven't been through all of this thread to check), Southgate's gone:
Pickford
Trippier Walker Maguire Stones Shaw
Rice Phillips
Sterling Kane Foden0 -

BBC and ITV have both conducted interviews with Saka to discuss his GCSE results, so they’ll be devastated if he doesn’t start8
