Those that got away

With all the speculation on the rumours thread about our apparent non transfer activity it made me think about those who got away in the past.
I have always assumed that in reality some deals didn’t come off /get into the wider public domain at the time despite being very close and all but done e.g. transfer fees agreed but personal terms not (despite being close), 11th hour gazumping by another club or a player getting cold feet etc.
So who, of noteworthy mention (if anyone actually knows) didn’t we sign but genuinely very nearly did ?

I’m sure all of these were in the January Transfer Window in 2007.
Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson on a double deal but they went to Celtic instead.
Anthony Stokes but he went to Sunderland.
Clint Dempsey but he went to Fulham.2 -
Malcom MacDonald0

Jeremy Goss, even signed before we missed out on him.1

Don Hutchinson chose Sunderland over us
Malkin was one who was going to sign under Curbs but we pulled out of the deal at the medical
(Thanks to Ricky_Otto for unintentionally correcting me)0 -
Steve Sidwell was lined up1

Cahill was lined up from Millwall, but he chose Everton because Murray / Curbs messed up meeting him2

Curbs said in his book that Murray went and met him as Curbs was on holiday, then Curbs went and met him alone as Murray wasnt available - Think he felt that it showed a lack of seriousness in them wanting Tim Cahill as he decided on Everton.valleynick66 said:

Think he went on to say that they made sure they didnt make that same mistake again when going after targets0 -
