The fundamental problem in our team has been exactly the same since we lost Bielik and Aribo - the midfield is not good enough for the level we are playing at. We can pick a formation and personnel desgined to create chances, but if we do we will never dominate possession sufficiently to control the game and get our attacking players the ball in good areas, and we will be too open defensively. Or we can pack the midfield and have an element of control but we won’t create the chances we need to to win games.
We’ve signed a lot of players in the 2 and a bit years since Wembley but the only decent new centre midfielder (Cullen we already had) was Gallagher. Dobson looks hard working but limited (he’s no Bieleik or Cullen in that holding role) and Clare is athletic but he’s no Aribo in terms of ability.Midfield is where game are won an lost these days, but it seems to be a blind spot for us recruiting wise.2 -
