Can we dial back the pile on of Seth please? It's really not very pleasant or necessary.
He has his views on the use of advertising to influence us towards bias over a particular brand. Agree with them or not, or just ignore them and focus on whether the advert itself is actually any good (for me it's not as "good" as in other years btw).
No need for the personal stuff imo.

Presumably research will say otherwise but I don’t think I have ever bought something influenced by the advert. To caveat, I mean other than an advert making me aware of a product. For instance, if there was some type of brand new product then obviously without some kind of advertising I would not be aware of it. I am talking more along the lines of say an aftershave advert with Johnny Depp in a desert wouldn’t make me buy a particular brand of aftershave over another one, only the actual smell can do that, and that is nothing to do with the advert1

Err no, most advertising is designed to mould you and do your thinking for you and corrupt your ability to make an objective decision.
Do your own thinking guys, and please gamble responsibly!seth plum said:
I give up. You clearly need to see someone who can help you with your warped sense of reality.1 -

No need for the personal stuff imo.Sure, everyone is entitled to an opinion, no argument there.
But I thought the general rule on here, which is observed by the vast majority, is to let it go on the main forum. It happens time and time again. Some people seem to think they should be able to get the soap box out, when the majority of others don't, even though they probably would like to. Some people’s posts have a continual underlying political theme that generally goes unnoticed (or maybe people do notice it, but choose not to rise to it), but when it’s blatant what does everyone expect?
Agree it shouldn’t get personal, but why do it in the first place? It’s constant and even on Christmas threads, and it’s stopping good people from visiting the forum

We all know the power of advertising can be influential on SOME peoples choices. It was ever thus and is why there is a massive marketing industry around the World. And if people want to waste their money on a product they don't need, then it's up to them and none of his righteous business.
But if he really believes some women singing "Ooooooh, bodyform, bodyform for you" is going to influence or manipulate me into buying the full range of their products, then he's talking bollocks.
And he knows it.0 -

seriously , Colin Robinson knows exactly what he's doing so what's the point in arguing and ruining a thread started 5 years ago.1

Some pile-on's seem to be fair game, depending on who the messenger is.3 -

You're making a semi valid point, but why refuse to note the body dysmorphia in men?
Men and boys across the world are taking dangerous substances to cut fat and build muscle to attain equally if not more unrealistically attainable bodies.
Men are constantly marginalised when it comes to mental health. That pisses me off more than anything on this thread so far.1 -
I'm happy to say that all the semi-naked fit young blokes on the adverts have not been able to body shame me at all.
Fat and proud.2 -
Blimey, this thread has taken a turn since I posted earlier, it’s only an advert, if you don’t like them do what I do and don’t watch them.4
-
On the advertising front, personally I don't remember ever being influenced to buy anything I hadn't already intended to buy.
Like both the JL and Lidl ads personally.1 -
I remember as a child seeing an advert on the back of a magazine and asking my dad why a picture of torn purple silk would make me want to smoke that brand of cigarettes. He explained that it wouldn’t, but if you were a smoker seeing the advert would likely make you want a cigarette and light up. He also explained that most brands of cigarettes were produced by the one company so they couldn’t care which type you actuality smoked. He was quite a smart guy, but still sadly died from lung cancer.
Quite rightly that kind of advertising is now banned. On the flip side I am currently thinking of starting a sideline lifestyle business and if I do I will advertise. There will be nothing more sinister in that than it is the only obvious way to let people know beyond word of mouth about my service. It seems to me advertising can be a very broad church in terms of intentions and morals.1 -
So I came on here to see the new John Lewis ad and am now left with no compulsion to return anytime soon because, yet again, a thread has been completely hijacked by one person. The same person who gets away with it time after time.
Seriously, it's like a game of self-righteous bingo. You can tick off just about all of the usual topics on this thread. So sad.5 -
