There's an issue with the video relay to the third umpire.  Normally, every delivery can be checked in real time and then reviewed immediately afterwards, on request from the third umpire.  Those requests and the immediate replays were not available at the start of this match, so the Umpires agreed, between them, that the standing umpires would call the no-balls and only those that resulted in wickets would (and could) be reviewed.

The third umpire calling every no ball was not an option.  So, we don't know how many no balls either side have bowled that have been missed in this match.  But we do know of one, very expensive one.

    It's 100% Stokes's fault.
Why isn't the video replay system working? This isn't some outground in a developing country

It does beg the question what the standing umpire was looking at the point of each and every one of those deliveries!

'Technological issue', expected to be fixed in time for the second test.  Both teams were aware.  England should have had a spotter, with binoculars.  That they didn't confirms that it's 100% down to Stokes to put his feet in the right place.
  • Today is an example of what we can do to this bowling attack when we show some grit.

Hazlewood seems to have been carrying an injury and by being patient initially (mostly Hameed) we saw bowlers into their 2nd and 3rd spells. Starc was expensive and Lyon didnt really threaten. Cummins was forced to use Lyon much more and earlier than he would have wanted and the same with Green. Once you're in that position its much easier to keep the score ticking over when Cummins was bowling and attack the other bowlers.
  • It's crucial to attack the support bowlers,in the same way the Aussies targeted Leach. Having a good spinner holding an end makes so much difference, it's no coincidence that we had Swann in 2010/11 when we won here

The technological issue is with snicko, not the video replay system. COVID restrictions prevented maintenance coming to fix it. Agree they should have had a spotter but it’s still on the umpire to advise when the bowler is getting close to or overstepping. Rumour is they missed something like 15 no balls in Stokes bowling.
  • What time start tonight ?

    This is from Cricket Australia

"The technology used for that process is currently unavailable for this Test match due to technical problems, and as such, the responsibility to check front-foot no-balls has fallen back to the on-field umpire.

Officials are hopeful the no-ball technology will be available again as soon as possible".

  • Oh Joe - did you need to play that?

Appalling shot by Root, lucky not to get out last ball last night.
  • Two more wickets down already and neither to balls that were anything special.
  • Is this a test cricket thing or just England?

I've lost count of the times we've gone in after a good day batting only for that good work to be undone in the first 5  overs of the next day.

  • 234-5.

Pope bounced out to slip off Lyon.
  • Really not sure what Pope was trying to do there
  • Time for a Stokes/Buttler assault me thinks
  • Playing one day shots.
  • Playing one day shots.
Lyon will love that the form he's in
  • Great, we now have a confident Lyon as well
