    Swann the best English spinner for a generation
    I don't think I need to justify Anderson

    Like I said I might change some of them but 4 of them would always be in my team.

    Hamilton, Murray, Redgrave, Lennox Lewis, Chris Hoy, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Faldo, Mo Farah are just some off the top of my head.

    Root is of course only 31 though, so let's see where he's got to in a few more years.

    The thing that counts against Root, and Murray, is they have never been clearly the best in the world.  Obviously that's more a result of when they were born.

    How abhor about some oldies, Edrich, Compton, Laker, etc. they can’t all be minders day wonders as cricket was played prior to the year 2000.

    Ok I admit I’m an old git, and was at the Oval when Colin Cowdrey caught Fiery Fred’s 300 test wicket.

    If you're compiling a list of the greatest sportsmen this country has produced, surely there has to be a place for someone who won an Olympic gold at tennis at Wimbledon, scored a century at Lord's, captained England at football and Britain in the Davis Cup, and made a 147-break in snooker?  (Max Woosnam) 

    Or someone who played football and cricket for England, and rugby for Blackheath and the Barbarians? (CB Fry)

    Just within cricket Ian Botham has to be in with a shout as well, in Tests 5,200 runs at 33 and 383 wickets at 28. At his peak, Botham was a lethal bowler

    Fred has 3,845 wickets at 32, 226 wickets at 33
    Stokes has 5,116 at 36 but only 175 wickets at 32

    Max Woosnam was a legend in life generally, alongside the notable sporting achievements above he had fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, was on the board of directors for ICI and once beat Charlie Chaplin at Table Tennis.....despite using a butter knife as a bat!
