Simon Jones? I really did rate him and obviously injuries ruined his career but very controversial to have someone there who only took 59 test wickets. I started following Cricket in 2003, would have to be:cantersaddick said:Trescothick

So what are the odds tomorrow & what do Winviz reckon ?
Personally I think NZ are slight favourites because I know we still have a batting collapse in us & their spinner looks a lot more dangerous than Leach.
I'd say
NZ 50%
England 40%
Draw 10%0 -

Remortgage the house job if you can get 9/2 on a coin clip.0 -
Not sure how the draw is so high! This England team isn't going to be batting out for the draw!! This could be an epic day of cricket!!Callumcafc said:

The only way a draw will happen is if NZ eat up overs before lunch (not going to happen) and we get to 230 for 4 chasing 280 and have a mini collapse so that we are 8 down going into the last hour with just Anderson & Leach to come in. Then we might see us defend & bat for a draw.0 -

I think we have to be careful in thinking that just because this is a new, aggressive, England team under McCullum/Stokes that pragmatism won't come to the fore at some point. There are two influencers here - one is the fact that we are leading 1-0 in what is a three match series and the other is the chances of chasing down 300 plus in the final say 70 overs on a fifth day pitch. Admittedly, for us to be doing that, NZ would have to score another 60 or so runs in approximately 18 overs.golfaddick said:

What if we go two or three down very quickly (it has been known to happen with this side), do we think that England will continue to flash hard? Or settle for the draw? Equally, I recognise that this is only just over 4 an over but that is still easier said than done - teams aren't restricted in terms of the fields that they set or where they bowl the ball as they are in one day cricket and they could have seven or eight on the off side and hang the ball out there without any fear of a wide being called.0 -
Test runs aren't as easy to score as one day and if we lose a couple of early wickets we could chew up a few overs .
First priority is to not lose the test then if opportunity arises go for the win
this isn't hollywood1 -
If Root stays in we win
On the other hand if we're 43-2 with Root back in the hutch, that target will seem a long way away. Anyone can slog 20-40 runs, but Root uniquely has the ability to score rapidly without slogging.0 -
I think this will be a big test for Crawley he needs runs in this innings1
-
got to get them all out first... can see the tail wagging this morning.1

Not sure he does, no one is knocking on the door.. Not sure why will go back down the Burns road.. I think they like Crawley positive approach! The one that could go will be Bairstow for Brooks! And maybe Leach for ParkinsonJohnnysummers5 said:I think this will be a big test for Crawley he needs runs in this innings0 -

Crawley 302 runs at 30.20
Compton 958 runs at 106.44
In addition, Compton scored 158 runs in two innings against NZ too.
It's no good being aggressive if you keep getting out doing that. The job of the openers should be to bat 'til the shine is taken off the ball and we have enough stroke makers to follow to allow them the time to do that.3 -
Jamieson will bat today0
-
I know this doesn't happen in Test cricket but I wonder whether the batting order should be changed with Root coming in later, just to shore it up if we have lost too may cheap wickets. Him & Foakes have shown that they can hang around together & just wondered if the Management would consider this ?killerandflash said:If Root stays in we win

Compton is having a season of his life! And has been outstanding don't get me wrong.. But for me, I would like to see him do it for a whole season, and if starts well next year then put him in.Addick Addict said:

Would much rather England stick with a settled side. My betting is, Crawley will play a match winning innings today!2 -
Compton's stats are mad, only 16 FC games, average in the 60s but he's 28. Considering his background... where's he been hiding and why hasn't he been given a chance?DubaiCAFC said:

I see England started as they mean to go on.
Ffs !0 -
If England win this I will be pleasantly surprised.
My best guess is a draw, but obviously it could go any way.0 -
Fantastic gesture to let the crowd in free today.2

Imagine what we would be saying about Stokes if his Test average were 41 instead of 35.
Then think how gutted we would be if we were to lose by 11 runs.
Because Stokes has concede twelve no balls in the match to date. If a great fast bowler like Darren Goigh can question Stokes' need to push the limit then surely it is really time he sorted it.1 -

That's what I mean, could be a one season wonder, could put him in for England, then may go the other way.. Let's see how well he is doing in a years timekentaddick said:

Nailed on for a draw imo.0

New ball is the key.0

There is a very, very simple answer to that question. He isnt a white ball player.kentaddick said:

I've touched on this time and time again but counties have refused to give contracts to batsmen who do not offer a second discipline but, more to the point, who can't hit the ball 360 degrees.
Compton scored loads of runs three seasons ago for Kent in 2s cricket but no contract was offered because of his limited shots - something that never stopped Cook but he came through in a different era.
The so called red ball re-set and Kent's realisation that they didn't have anyone who could just occupy the crease (plus they had no left handers) led to him being given a contract.2 -
I agree with this, but he has played a lot of 2nd team 4 day stuff, and has never pulled up trees.. He had an okay-ish when he did play 2s.Addick Addict said:

No doubt he is a good player, and I hope he can prove to be a great find, but for me he has to do it for a bit longer, this maybe an outstanding purple patch then disappears in 2 years time!1 -
Or not!killerandflash said:New ball is the key.1 -
I know, let’s NOT take the new ball.1

The short ball tactic may have gotten two wickets, but it is never not moronic imo. Boult with a lovely tennis shot there0
-
Ridiculous short pitch bowling, getting close to ensuring England won't win this game.0
-
I still say NZ are favourites.
Then the draw
