Doesn’t look like we’ve signed Jack Payne?Bexleyheath_Addick said:The office announcement video has been deleted from the CAFC twitter account. Shame, thought it was brilliant and was starting to go a bit viral by the looks of it.

Very good signing. I mentioned on another thread that I watched all of Swindon’s goals last season (sad act, I know) and the one player that stood out was their number 10. Buzzing we’ve got him, I think he will be a great option in midfield and as a 10.10

Note to self. Do your research. I take it back.Wheresmeticket? said:I hate to be Nobby Negative but if all these players make for promotion why are Swindon in L2?6 -
I suppose the disappointing thing for him is that when Huddersfield got promoted to the PL, he then went out on loan to L1 and not the ChampionshipCallumcafc said:Payne was very highly rated by Huddersfield fans but was considered a bit too lightweight for the Championship/Premier League.
He made 23 appearances in his first season there. The same season they got promoted. He ended up being loaned out as he wasn't ready for the step up.
If Huddersfield hadn't gone up that year, it's possible Payne would've established himself as a Championship player that following season.
As it is, he's bounced around on loans and seems to be refinding himself. at 27 years old, he's coming into his peak years, I'm hopeful we'll see the best of him.0 -
Payne was going to/trying to leave Swindon until he met and started working with Garner. Williams, Egbo and Reed only signed for Swindon because of Garner.soapboxsam said:Chunes said:
Tbf that was the first season he's spent in League Two since 14/15. He was there because they got relegated. He's played the majority of his career at League One/Championship.Sillybilly said:I don’t know what to think. We wanted a clear out. We’re getting one. We wanted some goals from midfield. On the face of it Jack helps here. But the niggling feeling that we’re recruiting a bunch of league 2 players haunts me. Welcome aboard the good ship Swindo, sorry CAFC Jack. I hope you are a ray of light.
Seemed a strange career decision for Jack Payne to stay in League 2 after the relegation. That type of loyalty disappeared last century.
Can these players come together and be successful as they have had stuttering careers up to now.
Hopefully yes.
None of them are really, or ever were, league 2 players.4 -
I have no concerns that top L2 players won't be able to cope with L1.Callumcafc said:
We’re not just taking any old League 2 players, Swindon finished in the playoffs after a summer of turmoil. And we’re taking the cream off their top.Sillybilly said:I don’t know what to think. Welcome aboard the good ship Swindo, sorry CAFC Jack. I hope you are a ray of light. The Swindon three. Sessegnon on loan who has real pedigree and McGrandles who has already proved himself as a top midfielder at this level.No-one will know the Swindon trio better than Garner. We have to back him. And we have no reason not to at this stage.
(O’Connell is the sixth man, the odd one out coming from a struggling Rochdale. But converse to what you might expect, he’s the one looking most assured in pre season.)
My one slight concern is whether they'll be good enough for a promotion seeking L1 side, one which should be aiming for the automatics, as opposed to a upper midtable one. That's the big unknown5 -
On that front, we’ll have to wait and see.
And our business still isn’t done.
Promotion isn’t won in July. Otherwise Ipswich would’ve been 21-22 league champions14 -

For the first time in probably a decade I can say THAT is a strong Charlton midfield. Welcome Jack Payne. Looking forward to all your goals and assists and a great injury-free season ahead.0

Good point. There is a huge difference between top end L1 and playoffs outsiders in L2. Hoping they can all play their game at this level...Sillybilly said:I don’t know what to think. Just remind me Swindon finished in 6th position in Division 2 last season and now it’s expected that these same players push us on to The Championship.Sillybilly said:I don’t know what to think. Come on, it is three of them isn’t it? what will you be saying if they all step up?, we don’t know yet do we?. Admittedly it could go tits up, but we need to give this new team a chance. I’m probably slightly more concerned about some we have retained.Lewis Coaches said:

Three players wont be the reason Swindon finished 6th / missed out on promotion.Lewis Coaches said:

I understand your point of view, but is it not good to bring in players with a point to prove, who fill they can step up, time will tell, just hope they are better than what we’ve got.Lewis Coaches said:

But then if Swindon HAD gone up, where would they have expected to finish under Garner in L1? Mid table at best after strengthening, like Cheltenham seeing that they don't have that "edge" which Accrington have, which can ruffle up softer big teams.ForeverAddickted said:

Theoretically, the other players we have should be better than the rest of the Swindon side, thus we should do better than that...3 -

Payne’s agent on Instagram:
"Couldn't be happier for @jackopayne1 on his signing for @cafcofficial today on a multi-year contract. We've had to be really patient on this one over the summer, as well as ensuring we stick to our core principles and are always putting the Player's wants and needs first to get it done, and I'm delighted that we stuck to our guns and got it over the line"
