In pre season, just going from what I've seen, Gilbey has been better than last season, with good energy and getting into good goalscoring positions.5

Gilbey really annoyed me last season, I hark back now and then to his Ipswich performance when he scored, that game I thought he was so good, then that was pretty much it after that. I give Morgan stick and defended Gilbey which made me look a right prick because how could I separate them after that game?, in fact Morgan was the better probably out of the two very disappointing players. Hopefully both players learn and improve, I now need convincing by both and not just the one.MuttleyCAFC said:
But it feels to me like some are criticisng now when he plays well. That is not right. If he has a poor game, call it. If he is ok or has a good game call that too. I am convinced he can get goals and we need goals with the tactics we are employing, which I am not sure about in all honestyChunes said:
He's deserved the criticism, he's been shit for two seasons!MuttleyCAFC said:I forgot about this game. I do believe Gilbey has the game to have goals in him. Glad he is showing it. Pisses me off when people slag him off when I think he has a lot to offer us.0 -
OK it was against Welling but it is the best I've seen so far, the passing was more accurate and crisper and the midfielders were getting more chances in the box, reckon it will be Gilbey's season.1

What has everybody on here got against Gilbey? Jesus Christ! It’s actually pathetic reading some of the comments!! Decent player before he came to us. Like some players have one decent season (ie McKirdy etc) that has been suggested on here….he may have just had one bad season!!
Kirk was decent before he came to us and has been poor whenever I have seen him play. Yet Blackpool want him back? We all need a touch of patience and appreciation that these players are professionals!!9 -
I don’t think energy has been his problem, it’s become quality in the right areas, decision making etc., he ended up letting himself down last season, among others of course.killerandflash said:In pre season, just going from what I've seen, Gilbey has been better than last season, with good energy and getting into good goalscoring positions.1 -
Morgan can’t surely start the season in the first eleven, he’s just not good enough as has been shown time and time again. JFC neither.3

I agree with that. I didn't watch the second half unfortunately or I'm sure I'd be writing songs for him. Let's hope he can finally bring his POTY form to The Valley. I just can't say I'm surprised if people are a bit cynical about his performances in these friendlies after watching him the past two years.MuttleyCAFC said:

Thought Ness looked very good today, interesting that BG moved him to CB and put Elerewere RB.2

Well you clearly saw the game through a blindfold if you think Kirk offered more than DJ in it. Let's wait for the highlights package, shall we, count how many times each gets involved?mart77 said:
Funny how people see games, I think Kirk offered more than DJ and find DJ far more frustrating. That said it’s Welling in a bcd friendly so it means v v little!john3 said:Really don't know what Kirk does , he can't take players on or won't, hasn't got the pace to play as a winger; Claydon has loads more pace, takes players on, can deliver a good cross, and tracks back and puts a tackle in.
Some good goals, JFC looked good, Gilbey was good, Ness was tidy, DJ was good.
Mcgillvery still worries me as do our defence when we start passing it around at the back under pressure.
I know it's only a friendly but I don't see any improvement in Kirk, not a fan at the moment.2 -
Kirk's not your typical winger, he's more like a playmaker out wide. Links up well at times and can pick out a clever pass to play in an overlapping full back or midfielder getting into the box.john3 said:Really don't know what Kirk does , he can't take players on or won't, hasn't got the pace to play as a winger; Claydon has loads more pace, takes players on, can deliver a good cross, and tracks back and puts a tackle in.

He's one of the players most obviously suited to a patient possession game over a high tempo counter attacking one.
I'm looking forward to seeing how he does this season. There will be games where he's what we need in that position, and other times when more direct approach from CBT is the better option.12 -

I thought Gilbey and JFC were good, while Ness and Clayden had decent moments. But it has to be highlighted that Welling are the weakest opponents we've faced, other than the hapless bunch of kids and triallists in the last 15 of the Dartford match.lancashire lad said:OK it was against Welling but it is the best I've seen so far, the passing was more accurate and crisper and the midfielders were getting more chances in the box, reckon it will be Gilbey's season.1 -
I’m not a big fan of Chuks, but don’t like to see anyone struggle with injury, his head must be in bits at times, so for that I feel sorry for him. But how the hell did somebody decide on a three and a half year deal? The only saving grace is the 5 sub rule otherwise how can you keep risking him breaking down, is the risk worth the reward?. I hope we don’t end up not signing another forward in the hope chuks and stockley stay fit.1

Any early opinions on whether or not Aneke’s injury looked serious?0

i was impressed with Kirk thought he played well15

Can you be scorned by a first touch? Or by passes to nowhere? Or by knocking it back to the defender rather than looking for a forward option? Or by weak tackling? Anyway he's a great player now, I look forward to him doing that in League One as wellBrownie12 said:
First post from me, but I get the impression that Leuth came on to Gilbey and was turned down.ForeverAddickted said:

I thought there were some good positives tonight. If that’s our ‘reserves’ it shows we’re way ahead of last season. Think you can see ‘Garnerball’ starting to emerge. Sadly I think some of those who started tonight will potentially move on shortly i.e. Gilbey, JFC and Kirk but hopefully we will replace with players that Garner wants.Garners arrival I think should be a clean sheet for everyone, whether previously good or poor in previous seasons. I’m actually optimistic atm, so much so that I renewed our 3 season tickets today!1

But his performances have been poor. Just because you think he has a lot to offer, doesn’t negate the fact that he hasn’t delivered since he’s been here.MuttleyCAFC said:I forgot about this game. as to his performance tonight, it’s a behind closed doors game against Welling. If he turns it round this season and contributes then I will give him credit, but you can understand why he gets criticism based on the 2 years he’s been here4 -
It's going to be hard for Garner to compare the performances of tonight's team when compared to tomorrow's, as the level of opponent will be so much harder. You imagine that Swansea under Russell Martin will keep the ball a lot, so we'll struggle to play the high possession game Garner likes, and the midfield will have to do a lot more defending, rather than bursting forward at every opportunity.0

Not having a go at anyone, but is it just me that cringes a little at this’Garnerball’ analogy? Just sounds like it should be something revolutionary but isn’t. It’s just footie isn’t it? Maybe I’m too old school and not down with the kool Katz!!19

JFC is to you what Gilbey is to @Leuth at least he has something of a point.LargeAddick said:Morgan can’t surely start the season in the first eleven, he’s just not good enough as has been shown time and time again. JFC neither.
He has been the best midfield player in teams that have finished 6th and 7th. If he was the worst of the 3, unless you had a complete clown show at either end you would be alright, wouldn't you?1 -
I wonder if they are expecting Dobson to leave and they are planning for life without him , hence the appearance tonight in the seconds.

Gilbey's got one year left on his contract and strong competition with two CMs arriving this summer, one in January and the other two being our most recent POTYs. I felt he had that potential this time last year but this season he'll likely have to wait for his chance. It feels a bit like the Waggy v Green debate under Powell - unless he's scoring goals Gilbey may find it hard to keep his place. Fraser, McGrandles and Payne all signed expecting plenty of game time.cabbles said:

I am not sure this team was put out to be those being transfer listed or (team2) I think there was to many players who I would have been expecting to be around the first team involved to be honest.wmcf123 said:I wonder if they are expecting Dobson to leave and they are planning for life without him , hence the appearance tonight in the seconds.
I know it was only Welling but there was still an opportunity for players today to show what they have to offer. I agree with what some others have said about the team, I still do not think Ben Garner knows his starting 11 yet. And we will discover that against Accrington3 -
Every club does it nowadays... Kloppball, Bielsaball, Potterball, Gerrardball... just a few off the top of my head.paulfox said:Not having a go at anyone, but is it just me that cringes a little at this’Garnerball’ analogy? That is my point. If we are going to make the tactics work for us, we might need a player like Gilbey.Scoham said:

going by the old fashioned view that your first 11 might play together in pre season. But I’ve always assumed McGrandles was signed to replace Dobson0 -
I do think he’s somewhat over rated but my main concerns are over his injury record. When he leaves it will be interesting to see where he goes, how often he plays and how well he does. I don’t think it’s a move we will come to regret.Cafc43v3r said:

Yeah I'm not writing off anyone in the squad having an impact this season. Going to be very interesting to see who Garner picks in central midfield vs Accrington and what becomes our first choice. McGrandles and Payne may also see themselves being that goalscoring CM, good to have what appears to be genuine competition in there.MuttleyCAFC said:
