Post-match Thread: Shrewsbury Town vs Charlton Athletic | Saturday 22nd October 2022 - 3pm

Charlton travelled up to Shropshire seeking their first away win against a solid and in-form Shrewsbury side that haven’t lost at home all season.
The opening minutes of the first half started with both sides quite tight and cagey. There were attempts for each side that could have separated the sides, but neither were able to capitalise. Rak-Saki had two gilt-edge chances that left him and his teammates shaking their heads. As the half wore on, Charlton grew into the game, finding their passing form and some confidence in their attacking intent. But the first half finished goalless.
The second half started much like the first. However, having weathered a period of Shrewsbury possession, the Addicks found their feet and began to impose themselves again. After a handful of decent opportunities, on 69 minutes, Rak-Saki’s persistence paid off when he found the back of the net on his third attempt to put the Addicks ahead. From then on, Charlton managed the game out, looking well organised and solid with and without the ball.
A solid performance resulting in a much needed away win and a clean sheet. Finally, we’ve strung a few wins together for that elusive run up the table. 3 wins in 3.

Well deserved, Shrewsbury threatened at times but were more interested in protecting and hitting us on the break - How that has got them to the heights of 8th (before the game) I'll never know.
Glad Rak-Sakyi got the winner, but got he was shit and that will be reflected in the marks from me.
Big win, as apart from Ipswich the fixture list looks very kind to us between now and Boxing Day, so there is a great opportunity to really push for a Play-Off position as we head into the New Year. Of course it could all yet change (as we've shown ourselves the last few weeks), but thank fuck that first away win is done and dusted.

Huffed and puffed in the final third, should have been 2-0 up at HT!JRS had been terrible until his goal, so hopefully a bit of confidence gained there- thought Campbell struggled but again confidence is key… CBT truly missed today!
aneke isolated when coming on, but to be expected. Defence looked strong which is a positive.Leaburn and a January Striker Signing would strengthen us tenfold6 -
I’m getting carried away but this team has most of the qualities needed for a promotion side. We have grit, technical quality, athleticism, experience, youth, strength in depth. Combine all of that with the momentum we’ve got now from 3 wins on the bounce, we will be up there.4

Well done to Garner for starting Campbell. Don't overlook that. He could have played it safe.32

Also, credit to JRS for the goal. Would be easy to hide, or lose confidence after the first two misses, but he kept himself available and took the goal with composure. That’s rare for loanees at his age.21

Its his injury that has forced us to play catch up, as there were so many silly goals that Clayden was involved in during his absence - No fault of his, as he's not a Full-Back, but shouldnt have been put in that position in the first place.9 -
Really impressed with that.OConnell and Innis superb. What a difference. Jayden, Dobson, Kirk and Fraser also excellent. Thought Payne was exactly what we need too.

We were so hard to read early on this season because we were drawing so many games. Were we good or were we bad?The season was on a prolonged knife edge because of so many draws. People say it takes 10 games to figure out how good you are but it’s taken us a handful of extra games this season.I almost lost faith in us after the horrendous result at Barnsley. That was the first time heads went down on the pitch and I thought the results were going to turn from draws into defeats.
But since then we’re now five unbeaten, three clean sheets in four and were making the teams above us nervous. Everything is looking positive, and the coaching staff have to take massive credit.
Garner is a very good manager who won’t be at this level for more than a couple of seasons.16 -

I do think you are being a bit harsh on an inexperienced 19 year old though.

We spent all summer and the first quarter of the season and look awful, change system and suddenly we’re one of the best teams in the league!

Their next four games are Plymouth, Portsmouth, Barnsley and Sheff Wed. Expect them to get 2-3 points max from that and tumble into the bottom half by mid November.0 -

Probably the kind of game we would have drawn or lost a couple of weeks ago. If everyone stays fit until January and Sandgaard takes a knock on the head that makes him realise that this team can get promoted with just a bit of investment, then we could be on to something.6
