Lee had a biometrically perfect action, but he wasn't much above 90mph most of his career. Starc is similar. Johnson had a bit more pace than either, and a lot more injury problems too
johnson was a one trick pony (only really getting going on fast aussie wickets, coupled with his slinging action made him unplayable), brett lee was fast and a better all round bowler.
  • definitely a bowl first morning here in north london. Very grey! Weather to pick up later this week though.
  • Zak will be desperate England bowl first!

On a hiding to nothing really.

Zak will be dancing around the dressing room, England win the toss and bowl.

Had the pleasure of meeting Harry Tector's dad, Heatley, seven years ago when Harry's younger brother, Tim, was playing for Leinster against Kent in a cricket festival at Taunton. Heatley is a lovely man and commentates about cricket on radio. Harry could go a long way in the game too.
  • 33.3% of all Joushes to play test cricket are playing today.  We could have 66.6% in the same game later in the summer.
  • Bairstow's keeping will be under pressure too.
  • Just seen that footage Sky have just shown of Bairstow keeping in The Blast. As Sangakkara inferred he does look somewhat cumbersome moving on that left leg. Given that keeping can be as much about the movement of the feet as it is the ability to catch that would seriously worry me. We shall see soon enough how restricted he is compared to Foakes as the obvious comparison.

  • Bairstow screaming for a catch already.
    Just shut up
  • I wondered why they had a leg slip for Tector. It's what the analysts are paid to do.

At this rate, it'll still be cold and overcast when he comes out to bat!
  • broad on flames this morning.
  • Decent first over from Tongue
  • Does anyone know the story behind Tongue's shirt number choice? It seems he's the first player to inherit someone else's previous number (Crawley).

I said this first week of the season. Being fit and able to bat in tests is one thing. Being fir and able to keep for 5 tests pretty nuch back to back is another. Atherton said on the sky comms for one of the surry county champ games  early in the season that there is no way after that injury he would pick bairstow to keep for the summer.

When he's at it he is my favourite bowler for England in my lifetime. That spell in the morning session against the Aussies a few years back was something to behold. I was there and I barely touched my drink during it. Which is saying something.

    who said he wasnt fast?
  • If Leach is brought on half way through the morning in The Ashes, do we think that the Aussies will try to hit him out of the park? Stokes is a reluctant bowler, for obvious reasons, which will put a bit of pressure on Leach to buy us time in between the stints of Robinson, Anderson and Broad.

Stokes claims he is fit to bowl a full quota now.  Of course time will tell.

I'll only believe that when he actually bowls a decent length spell, say 6 overs, at a good pace.

Said in qn interview he is back to 2019/20 levels of fitness. We will see how true that is. Especially with 5 tests pretty much back to back.

Appreciate that and saw that he says they have found ways to "manage" the situation. It always concerns me when I read that word rather than an operation  to sort it once and for all. That suggests that there isn't one he can have and that it is a chronic injury as a result of the repetitive nature of the pressure on that left knee when bowling. As you say, time will tell but his ability to bowl a dozen overs a day could make all the difference.
  • Am I the only one who has a bit of a dislike, effective or not, of a plan that is purely based around banging it in short? Much prefer it as an element of surprise rather than a negative run reducing and potential trap rewarding option.

Certainly not a fan of it before lunch on the first day at 70-4.

Maybe the afternoon of day 2 at 470-4

i've never liked short pitched bowling... but that might be because i'm 5'9, fast medium at a push and a number 11 bat!
  • It felt like England went to Plan B too early.
