Dave Courtney - RIP

Not sure if he was actually an Addick or not but was at The Valley again yesterday but found dead at his home in Plumstead today from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Whatever his past he’s someone’s son etc. RIP.

Not technically an Addick but he was fond of us because his right hand man, Brendan,  is one and Dave’s “Camelot Castle” is in Plumstead

He lost a bet with Brendan I think and that’s why he had the pool table with the Charlton badge on it.

Dave was at the game on Saturday with Brendan.  Guests of the match sponsor.  Dave looks particularly dapper to be honest and seemed in really good spirits.

just goes to show how easy it is to mask what’s really going through someone’s head

That is so true. These things can come completely out of the blue to who you least expect.

Can’t get my head around someone posting what a good day they had and then dead a few hours later.

was standing next to me in the Oak last home game and happily laughing and chatting away

    RIP

Scary how close this is to the recent Norwich city fc campaign on the subject.

It's exactly why they made it.

    Correct,

Whilst it does sadly seem he took his own life, it is currently under investigation by the Met, but that's standard practice, especially where a firearm is involved. RIP.

Ssd way to end his life. So many people learn to mask their feelings.

    RIP
  • Dave was what he was,he lived his life on the brink, his run ins with the law are legendary.I never met him but have read all of his books, which to say the least are very entertaining.Once again this seems like  a classic case of someone holding things in ,and not seeking help(probably think he would have considered getting help a weakness).I could imagine in the circles he moved in he would have hated admitting to any kind of mental problem.Really sad

RIP Dave....if, as reported, it is suicide then that is a very sad way to end a life. Mental health especially in men is a silent killer. Its difficult for many men to seek help, myself included, but it is essential it is sought.
I hope Dave is now at peace.

Met him once in the Millenium Lounge - was quite chatty and seemed OK - that must have been 5-6 years ago.  He was in there fairly regularly.  RIP.
  • Always sad to hear of somebody so desperate that they feel the only way out is to take their own life. I’m sure DC was a very naughty boy but I’m not sure he was quite the gangster he liked to portray himself. I’ve seen that he claims he was an associate of the Krays. Dave Courtney was born in 1959 the Krays were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1969. You do the math. RIP
  • That was a shock. I've read all sorts about various health issues, but he always looked ok whenever I saw him in The Oak.
I liked his book "Stop the ride I want to get off". RIP DC.

RIP . I get the impression that he was the sort of bloke who would never discuss his personal feelings with anyone - Proper old school and not the way to deal with anxiety or depression. Am i right in saying his stepson was murdered a few years ago . That might have been a contributing factor.

Speak to someone if you have any such issues .

Dave was indeed a naughty boy admitting some quite serious crimes in one of his books. As regards his Kray association,I think he was the security organisers at one or more of their funerals.

Larger than life character, shame he couldn’t reach out to someone.
Perhaps the more macho you are the harder it is.
Always sad when a person decides enough is enough.
    RIP Mr Courtney

Didn’t know him, but he’d always say hello to everyone and anyone in the west stand exec bar of which I was lucky enough to get tickets in for a few seasons on the spin.

But the point is that a guy who’s always chirpy and always smiling can go about his business like so and then feel so low he needs to take his own life should scare the shit out of all of us, check on your friends and family when you can because you never know.  RIP.
