Donations to a mental health or cancer charity would be a much better way to remember a life.21
-
Celebrated someone’s passing a few months ago with a balloon release, which was quite emotional and felt very fitting.
Must be honest, no environment impact and animals etc crossed my mind for a second. People do these things with only with good intentions in mind20 -

I remember when Chatlton were gong to release a load of balloons to celebrate promotion, but cancelled it, as they realised the damage they could cause.
I don't believe its the time or place to be telling others how to remember someone.27 -

So, don't worry about the hard of thinking on here @ME4addick.
In any event, while not wishing to interfere in anyone's celebration of life, any such balloon release requires CAA authority and 28 days notice must be given.
The release of small balloons in UK airspace is subject to the requirements of Article 93 of the ANO 2016 (as amended). Outwith the legal requirements, CAA Airspace Regulation may consider it necessary to impose restrictions in order to ensure flight safety, particularly for mass releases within 10 nautical miles of an active aerodrome. All applications should be submitted using the notification form.
I'm guessing none of us want a squadron of balloons sucked into a jet engine on take-off from LCY?
I find it difficult to believe people don't think of this stuff. Anyone who knows the organisers of the balloon release should probably tell them.20 -
Bloody hell. Watching that video was a little bit tough. You could tell how much Dave was hurting.

Maybe the pandemic and lockdown has made people weirder?1 -
Only on Charlton Life could a notorious South London Gangster, Hard man and enforcers thread get hijacked by the balloon police!60

At least we are being "educated".9 -
Our Karen's do love an argument. I reckon those against the releasing of balloons should turn up and stage a protest before they can be released. I'd love to see how it unfolds.13

Before we start rattling on about balloons, etc. If you want to do something for the countryside go down to the Darenth Industrial Estate and confront the flytippers. See how your concerns are treated then.

It's had a bigger reaction than a very tough to watch video someone made for his love ones to watch after he killed himself.3 -
Well this has all been very educational as usual on CL. I have now been schooled on environmental issues and of course, the local airport.
Fortunately I do not suffer from Globophobia but I have stood on the same precipice that this man did early on Sunday morning, staring into oblivion. Thankfully though, the love of family and friends put a collective hand on my shoulder and lead me safely away.
To this day though, I still know where that cliff is, so please use the contact links provided somewhere in this thread, if you feel alone, wasted and unfulfilled.
Dave Courtney, I had no connection with your world. I neither condemn nor condone your life choices. But please rest in Gods grace. RIP.

It's the usual suspects who jump on anything I post, that have 'hijacked' this thread. I have only pointed out how damaging to the environment such a balloon release is. We have one planet and we need to start taking better care of it.
I have not been disrespectful to Mr Courtney, just pointed out the damage that can be done by this sort of action.
I think the outcry and lols for my posts says more about those posters, than it does about my genuine care for wildlife and our environment.34 - Sponsored links:

Steady on, there's a pile on starting which I don't feel comfortable with. The beauty of this forum is the abstract and sometimes odd views. Never met Dave Courtenay but was a passenger in a car that nearly flattened a peacock in Plumstead which I assume was his. Thing was massive and just looked at us

NB there is also a suggested 64th minute applause for Dave who was aged 64.
No offence to family, friends and acquaintances, but I've followed Charlton home and away for over 50 years and I'd never heard of nor recognise Dave Courtney. RIP.14 -
ME14 seems a easy target. I tend to disagree with almost everything she's ever posted, but I'm not sure why she's getting grief over this topic of which she's pretty much bang on.28
-
I should add, RIP. I couldn't watch much of the video, just made me incredibly sad how matter of fact he was being. I had no idea he was a Charlton fan, not a name that's popped up on lists before as far as i remember.0

Sad end to what seems like a very colourful life. But at least he chose his own way of going, which many of us can't.

Whenever ME14 or Seth post there's a pile on. I don't get.7 -
The bloke was a fan who done quite a bit for charity and who took his own life relatively publicly. Personally can't see how people clapping in his memory would trigger anyone. It's not compulsory to join in and it's not like it's being arranged officially by the Club.
