Unbeaten run…

     The delusional would.
Doncaster Rovers lost 5-1 at home to Stockport and were 21st in league 2 on 27th January. Since that game they lost once, and have won 10. Currently 7th and can nick the last playoff place.

I’m sure they love being delusional.

There game on Saturday at home to Barrow is their biggest game since the playoff with us. “quote” their fans in saying that.

Ok because an unbeaten run is only ever good if you win all of the games you don't lose?

Cast your mind back 6 months fella!
Just ignore the rest of my post then fella!!

An unbeaten run is still an unbeaten run, as will be installing confidence in the squad which is the most important factor... Regardless if its a win or a draw
  • If it was thirteen one nil wins you’d be the first to say we didn’t score enough.
Its funny that the defeat that stopped the 13 win streak was a 1-0 defeat. So, once again, the lack of goals scored by us was the determining factor.

The 17 game unbeaten run in 1980/81 was also ended with a 1-0 defeat. The 16 game run 97/98 - 98/99 was ended with a 4-1 though.

Correct, for breaching FFP rules by £80 billion.

Our record run of 15 games undefeated included 12 clean sheets.

Very easy to win games when you don't concede.

Can't believe some of you lot. The only thing that MATTERED was keeping us up. Sinking into league 2 would have been disastrous. Now, next season is a different issue altogether.
Very true…. An exactly what we said at the end of the 2022-23 Season. An look where that has ended up…

So sorry if some of us continue to be a little sceptical about Jones and the promised land.
  • Lets clutch a few straws from this

Relief is the right word, but an unbeaten run containing lots of draws is nothing to get over excited about. This is our run

    DDDWDWWDDDWDD - 4 wins, 9 draws, 21 points

This is Appleton's run for his first 13 games

    DWDWDWLLWDDWD - 5 wins, 5 draws, 2 losses, 20 points

So much the same, indeed if you include the Reading defeat in Jones' first game in charge, both managers have the same points total for their first 14 games.

Now there’s the reality check we needed.

Nathan Jones has the same amount of points from his first 14 games as Appleton.

There’s really nothing to celebrate when you can’t win at home against minnows like Stevenage or a very young second string Wigan side OR you have delivered some of the dullest football any Charlton side has ever produced when scrapping draws against tiny clubs like Exeter, Cambridge & Fleetwood (that work to salary budgets that are a small fraction of ours).

People need to look at the bigger picture & accept that statistically this is the worst Charlton side for 100 years.

I’m not sceptical about Jones per se. He’s more than good enough to get us up IMO, but it relies on him being given a decent squad to do it.

The truth is, our unbeaten run has been about as unconvincing as an unbeaten run can be. That’s down mainly to the pretty poor squad we’ve managed to amass. To turn those draws into wins next season and really have a shot at competing we need to strengthen in a number of areas and I hope the sound of some of the straw graspers popping champagne because we’ve managed to draw a few games with the likes of Fleetwood, Cambridge and Northampton won’t distract from that important work.

I dunno about winning games, but if you keep clean sheets you're unlikely to lose many!

So what's our next move then if Jones isn't up to it?
A man whose last managed in the premier league prior to arriving at bog standard Charlton Athletic!
Who do we go for after we turf him out?
    Rob Edwards? Dyche? Klopp!!

  • Jones has done a great job turning the ship around and clearly is the right man for the job. Being able to stem the tide of defeats is no mean feat and I believe he's getting the maximum he can out of the players he has.

The players now are the issue and hopefully in the summer we are given a squad that is capable of winning games and finishing high in the table.

He did what he was brought in for. We were at total shambles. You may well be sceptical about next season, but at least you'll be sceptical in league 1. Let's see what happens.
  • Jones has done the first job, which was to keep us up. He's done that by going back to basics, with more effort and pressing, at the expense of the attacking quality. And indeed leaving out "luxury" players. He's done a good job, but not a miraculous one, as there's enough quality in this squad to keep us up under any half decent manager, with the "new manager bounce" they'd get from not being Appleton.

The next stage is to build a promotion winning side. AND style of football, as few teams get promoted playing hoofball.

At no point have I or anybody suggested Jones be removed. The point being made is the current situation hardly confirms him as the new “Messiah”. This current run of not losing is of course most welcomed. However, some of us are not inclined to take it as evidence that all is now well, and next season is going to be glorious.

We once finished 21st in a 22-team third tier. Statistically, that was worse.
  • I think Jones has turned us from being an underperforming team to one that has reached its equilibrium as a mid table side. Large clear out and good recruitment needed in the summer for us to be anything other than a reasonable mid table team.

I reckon this side would've come 8th/9th with Jones for the whole season
