Wasn’t he captain of a ship patrolling around the North Atlantic/ North Sea during the Cold War ? Between dealing with the sea and the Soviets they would have earned one or two medals for starters. Playing chicken with Icelandic ships and boats in those waters during the Cod War wouldn’t have been that pleasant a time either.AddicksAddict said:

Uncle Den's dad lived to 99 @IdleHans - sadly my own father just 77 - which I'm uncomfortably close to.
Den was awarded the Legion of Honour a few years ago @NornIrishAddick. I think I'm right in saying all surviving veterans from Normandy were awarded the medal. He certainly had it when I last met him two years ago. He brought the medal along with him. He is rightly immensely proud of it I grouped these photos together following that occasion (showing both sides of the medal, Den at the time + the original marine one).
Den has lived in France near the Spanish border with his daughter for the last 8 or 9 years.

I know the French are very keen to recognise everyone involved with D-Day, I think it's something they do really well.1 -
