DaveMehmet said:Off to Albufeira for 2 weeks first thing tomorrow. Doesn't look like we'll have a chance to meet up with @Algarveaddick unfortunately but can't wait to get out there. My mate has a place out there and told me about a classic car show not far from our villa this Sunday, my wife is suitably unimpressed!1

Returned from eventful fishing trip to Scotland. Bought an inflatable kayak to row out to the islands in Loch Awe to wild camp and fish.
I felt bad when I arrived in Scotland, and learned when I phoned my wife on arriving that my daughter had tested positive for Covid
Forgot my phone back up power pack and didn't make the call next day to confirm I was OK. She became concerned and contacted the police. I became a missing person almost immediately.
The police wanted to eliminate the possibility i had done a runner and the fishing trip story was a cover story - no sane old man pretending he was ill and without any kayaking experience would try and canoe across 250' deep Loch Awe in an inflatable kayak bought on Amazon the week before.
Awakened at 11pm by what I thought were Army manoeuvres but in fact the helicopter with its searchlight and red and green flashing lights streaming into my tent was the police search helicopter circling around and around sent out to see if I really was alive and fishing. Went outside to prove i was alive and it eventually went away. 30 minutes later a loud hailer from the shore was asking if I needed any help and was I OK. Told them everything was fine and promised I would go back to dry land the next day as I was causing so many problems.
Have written a nice letter to Oban police apologising for wasting police time and thanking them for their impressive search and rescue resources. The kayak is now on sale on Ebay if anyone is interested.
Lovely spot, see photo, (also note mysit-in fishing float tube) but caught nothing.

I have also just returned from Scotland. But further north in Shetland. Superb 10 day trip with so many highlights; my 4th trip there and I love the place.
This time around we saw hundreds of puffins (most had flown a few days later so we were lucky) and a group of Orcas who swam a few feet away from us as they hunted (successfully) 2 poor families of Eider duck. It was epic.

That’s brilliant @Dippenhall
Gavin & Stacey territory now, you’ll never be able to discuss the fishing trip :-)6 -
Had a week in Crete, first time there and absolutely loved it. More importantly, so did the kids 👍14

Which hotel was that AFKA?
Just back from Sun Palace in Faliraki
they had us in wrong room on first night ( should have had family room with two bedrooms, but had one room with just 4 beds next to each other) TUI gave us £550 compensation for the issue. could have had 750 if taken in TUI vouchers. Then flight home was delayed 4 hours so have just submitted claim and should be getting 4x£350 as well.0 -

I assume you got the right room thereafter. That sounds very reasonable on their part.3 -

wasn’t expecting anything monetary from them to be honest, maybe some vouchers for a trip etc so was pleasantly surprised1 - Sponsored links:

Wasn't sure whether to post this in the Autism thread or this one, but as it applies to other disabilities/neurodiversities as well, maybe better here.
My youngest daughter is autistic, and partly due to that and partly money, we've always done holiday cottages in England, and within a few hours of home, in the past.
However we're hoping to go abroad next year, somewhere within a 2/3 hours on a plane. However we are nervous of her flying - if she struggles when we're driving to a cottage in Devon or whatever, we can just go later, stop for a bit etc. Flying if we miss the flight because of a meltdown, that's £4000-5000 down the pan (and it's been a stretch saving for that!).
So my question is: Has anyone either with additional needs or with someone else with additional needs found any airlines better than others for allowing easy check-ins, specified seats etc? How easy or difficult was it to get help?
Cheers in advance for any advice!!0 -
I'm currently on my road trip holiday. Switzerland for 2 days, then Milan, Rome, Naples, pompei, Amalfi, then 6 days on sicilia, split between catania & palermo and a trip up (currently active) Etna. Left sicilia this morning and having a "do bugger all" day in a small town called Montalto uffugo. Tomorrow we head off to Latina, then 2 days in la spezia, where we will visit the beautiful cinque terre region. Last stop in Italy is Turin, followed by a day in Dijon and then home in time for the Bolton match.1

I really should not have said hey love, I have brought you a present back, that jar of mustard nearly got me divorced!0 -
Booked 4 nights in Tenerife at the end of November with 3 mates. I'm the youngest member of the party so don't think we'll be tearing the place up much. Will certainly be different to the last time I went there with mates.0

Loving the holiday thread.
I'm off to Riga for 5 days in September. Any suggestions on places to visit, bars, restaurants etc?.
One trip I've found is to a USSR nuclear launch pad and bunker!, sounds like fun 😅.

Any recommendations for Cancun? Would be for a first-timer in Jan/Feb.
I've noticed the Govt site advise against all but essential travel at the moment.

Something a bit different this year. Berlin for four nights and then the train to Prague where we will spend 3 nights and then the train to Budapest for four nights.
Really looking forward to it. (Thanks to @PragueAddick for his help and recommendations.)0 -
Back from 2 and a bit weeks in the south of France on the dordogne, loved it - great weather. Calais was a nightmare getting home on the ferry though on Sunday

Less exotic but we've just booked a September week near Dolgellau, an area I used to know well as my old fella lived in Barmouth for a few years. Havent been up there since I scattered his ashes in 2010. If it doesn't rain, its a beautiful area. It always rains.12
