And now….. my bank won’t take cash

Nat West in Dartford have a machine for paying in cash. It rarely works. Having been there with a load of coins from the egg box a few times when it’s broken I decide to bag the cash up  and take it in. No - they don’t take cash. WTAF? I need to use the machine.

So where can I take £700 of loose change?

Find another bank, Nat West in Eltham closed during the week, expecting customers to go to Bexleyheath, Woolwich or Lewisham.
The trend is for customers to do a lot of their banking online or via apps. However there are still customers who want old school banking.

Take it to the post office and deposit into your bank there.

Opened my first bank account there back in the day.  Dover has now closed, Hythe went a few years back .

I understand Arsenetatters need for a bank in this scenario but why else do people need banks? My branch is 150 miles away from where I live and this has been the case since 1997. I never need to go into a bank.

I would but our post office closed a few years back. The nearest one now has a battle axe who won’t take loose change .

I like to visit them in a black and white striped t-shirt, with a mask to cover my eyes and a bag with "swag" on it from time to time

My how we all chortle when I say... "Gimme my money"

How long did it take you to accumulate £700 of loose change and why did you accumulate it?
I don't think I've had more than £10 worth in my life.

Is she allowed to refuse? There is an option to give 'feedback' on the Post Office. i had to re a chap in the nearest one to us who wouldn't provide services during the advertised hours - very annoying when you turn up for the 3rd time to do something only to find he wouldn't provide the service within the hours. I got a £10 voucher I wasn't expecting

We have over 100 hens. Not all of them still lay but we have WAY more eggs than we can eat so I stick them in an honesty box outside our house and ask for donations.

Our local Asda has a cash counting machine. Which gives you a voucher to spend in store or get cash from customer services desk. Not sure doing £700 In one go will work.

We have one in our ASDA but it takes a cut (10%?) which is a bit much

Haven’t used much cash since Lockdown, prior to that, when getting change from cash exchanges, I would asked for a two pound coin and would that in a jar. Didn’t take that long before I had a grand.

If you go there with the lot it will take about £70 off you which is ridiculous. Why don’t you break it down into a series of smaller runners, say £100. Should only work out about a tenner lost when doing that, which sounds a lot fairer

Those machines take 9.9% commission, so it’s a a bit more than little.

Your local Post Office will take money that you’re paying into your bank account.

Small shops like newsagents often want coins and have to get (and pay) for them from the bank.
When my kids were small and had coins one shop was more than happy to exchange them for notes, as long as the copper was bagged into £5 etc.
If you have some small shops locally perhaps ask there.
You may even be able to sell your eggs to small food selling stores.

I've done the same with all the £2 coins I receive. Had a count up the other day and got about £620.

Is this the whole story here?

I suspect it’s not they won’t take cash but maybe not that much  and/or pre counted.

I have a vague recollection of limits being in place.

Do you small weekly shops in supermarkets at the self service checkouts, it will quickly go and you do not get charged for the privilege or annoy the checkout staff

Do you need an account to use the machine in Metrobank then? You never used to have to.
