Tragically we’ve reached the point where up and coming managers won’t see Charlton as a step forward in their career. Yes in terms of name perhaps, but any cursory look at our recent managerial history would scare off anyone still in a job, doing well, who know their chance will come at a club more stable than CAFC. Any manager with a track record, even one currently out of work is unlikely to touch us with a barge pole. Where does that leave us ? The desperate or hoping that someone from the current coaching staff is willing to step up snd give it a go. (Pearce ?) Maybe we should look at managers from Europe who might still see Charlton as a name and fancy a chance of getting into the English game.1

We've appointed a series of dreadful managers - most have disappeared after leaving us. Quite amazing to be so poor in L1 for so long.
I didn't expect the football and results under NJ to be this bad - we seem to be getting worse. Awful to watch and zero flair.8 -
I know it won’t happen but I’d like to see Powell in a DOF role, he has so much knowledge and is well respected by everyone in the game, apart from a number of Charlton fans, god only knows why. I think he’d immediately change the culture around the place. The way he always conducted himself we have been missing since he left. Fans, players and staff all bought into him. I actually think any manager right now will fail, the rot is above the manager, why does every manager that comes in fail?1

Lots of comments about how different types of managers arrive, yet we end up in the same place year after year. Following that with we need to get someone proven now, to get us up now - it’s just doing the same thing and expecting a different result.I really thought NJ would be the status of manager that could get us up on the short term…but here we are!
This grand old club needs to evolve, it needs a new era, it needs freshening up and modernising.I go back to my original thoughts pre NJ appointment, given where we’re trying to grow from. this is not going to be a short term process. I don’t want to see another appointment because “they could get us up now” and end up here again.Go for a young manager, with fresh ideas, new attacking playing philosophy, elite mentality and create a new identity that we can enjoy and get behind.I think there are some players here that would be part of a foundation to any style of play implemented, I don’t think we’d be starting at square one because of that.1 -
Darren Moore has 2 successes (Donny and Wednesday), 1 early success (current job), 1 decent job (West Brom) and 1 failure (Huddersfield). I'd take those odds. If Powell is genuinely ruling himself out (and I'd be surprised given it must seem unfinished business for him), it's Moore for me.1

Who would you suggest? Dave Challinor - His Stockport side had a bad day at the office vs us, but the table don't lie, and he's had them playing decent football for years. I don't think he'd leave for us, but he'd get it done I reckon.
Michael Skubula - Very decent record at Lincoln, hasn't quite got them going as much this season, but apparently he's been dealt a low hand. Hard to ignore his run of form at the back end of last season. I think with better resources he could achieve more
Darren Moore (probably no1 choice) - Very impressive record at West Brom and Doncaster all things considered. Sheffield Wednesday did a great job. Small blip at Huddersfield who were destined for relegation, and now doing a fantastic job so far this season with Port Vale. I think as a character, our fan base will warm to him a bit more. He's a man of the people type and isn't quite as cold as Appleton and Jones.
Ruben Selles - doing ridiculously well at Reading considering their circumstances. Reckon he will end up with a championship gig, looking like Hull atm, but he would get us playing attractive football.

That's true, think he arrived as an assistant to Ken Craggs with no managerial experience. Even though he became known for his achievements at Charlton though, I never think of him as having that past connection. If we're going to look at anyone who's ever worked as a coach for us to qualify as that link, the short list for the top job when it becomes available would be very long indeed, but I take your point.wmcf123 said:

Curbs was here so long the ownership then weren't used to making managerial changes. However the fact that we've had several owners, so many managers, and numerous players come through our revolving doors since doesn't convince me that only someone with a Charlton connection can succeed here.wmcf123 said:

If the past was a guarantee of the future, and it does feel like it all too often with us, I'd say we ought to narrow the selection criteria, but I don't see being an outsider as a barrier to achieving success here any more than I do someone more familiar.The only constant is the fans, and we don't manage the team.

Agreed. Going for managers with good track records requires an understanding of the set up at the clubs where they've achieved them, and whether it's possible to recreate similar here. Too many 'outsiders' have arrived without the support of those key to their successes for my liking. I don't trust our owners not to underestimate the importance of that.wmcf123 said:

Nigel Clough wouldn't come to Charlton but he has performed miracles with little money previously.
Otherwise Chris Powell or Johnnie Jackson as I don't think Curbs would take it.1
