I would guess potentially 2 midfielders? Gilbert to compete with Berry for the advanced role and someone to compete with Anderson and replace Campbell in effect.
With Enslin replacing Edun as the desperate backup

Yeah in effect, I'd be happy with that. Would still like someone that can do the TC role too because he'll need rotating too or some sides will try and do a job on him.

With the best will in the world Doc and Coventry are unlikely to play every game for the rest of the season without needing rotating or potential suspensions etc
Agreed, that leaves us very thin in midfield.

Campbell was an experienced loan, rather than a cheap kid, so I assume his wages would finance an experienced replacement loan player.

    QUESTION…..

if you had a choice of signing a decent new player or using the money to extend Smalls contract what would you choose ?

    I would go for Small
Small all day long... no guarantee that a new signing will have the impact - We could sign Haaland and I'd question if he'd be effective for us
You do know we've had one defeat in the last ten? It's as if you fell asleep after Crawley and just woke up. An attacking mid and maybe a central defender and we can get in the playoffs.

Can you guarantee me that the attacking midfielder and central defender wont have the impact of Allan Campbell and James Abankwah?

I'd rather sign Small on a long term Contract this month, and even if we miss out on promotion this season, use the summer to build further, seeing we've jumped from 16th, to challenging for the Play-Offs

Bar Ramsay and Small , who was the last " successful" last few days of the January window signing we made? Feels like most of the recent years have been panic signing loan players on deadline day when we miss out on a main target.

Only a matter of time before Coventry gets a 2 match ban because of 10 yellows. I’d be very surprised if we were not to bring in 3 players between now and Monday’s deadline.

Another central midfielder, we can’t go with just the ones we have now.

Another attacking midfielder, competition with Berry but someone who is different and can carry the ball through the middle well as well as pick a pass.

Another wide forward type who can help Small and TC. They must have pace and the ability to carry the ball, get us up the pitch, and run at players/in behind defenders.

Bring in these players and we have a real chance of doing what we want to achieve by the end of May.
Depends how long he can go without yellows. 10 games feels a stretch to only get 1 yellow but not impossible

He has 8 yellows now, so has to avoid getting 2 in the next 5 10 games. He was lucky we had a lenient ref on Tuesday!

Is it not up to 37 games? So 10 games to go

Sorry, I was reading the PL rules. No chance he will survive 10 games then.

Good point. He could easily have got one yesterday. Taylor was decent cover for him but they didn't work together. We are a bit short in that area now and also in the Small/Campbell role although maybe Enslin and Dixon are ready made solutions. I suppose it depends on what is available and what Jones thinks.

We haven't signed a player from another club since 26/08 which is 156 days. Must be one of the longest gaps we've had for quite some time.

Personally wouldn't want to put too much expectation on Dixon, yes he's scoring regular at U21 level but he looked completely out of his depth against Orient, I know he was up against a top quality fullback that night in Jack Currie but he looked physically a long way off.

Would much rather sign someone that can come straight in and make an impact and keep on developing Dixon in the background, maybe toward the end of the season if he's progressing well have a look off the bench.
  • Well considering that for something like 122 of those days,  we weren’t allowed to sign anyone,  doesn’t really sound that long

Well that’s good news to see.. Campbell going. Might mean looking to bring 3 in now. But won’t free up much on the budget, as Luton paying most of his wages..

Don't think we are short in that area. Doc is a CDM as is Anderson despite being played further forward. REG has played there and Zach has the tools to do that job.

More worrying is the CAM search with Cornick a possible to compete with Berry for a lazy no 10. Alex Gilbert seems to have played very few games with fewer goals or assists. Why aren't we in for Aasgard who can play wide or as a ten with a proven record and a free in June?

If it's Cornick or Gilbert I'd blood Enslin instead.

I can't see a downside to getting CBT on loan as cover for TS/TC but I'm a great fan of Dixon and think he has been prematurely written off from a single game when we were playing hoofball. He is mustard for U21s who actually play football.

It's 29th Jan, we've not signed anyone and nobody has thrown a tizzy! This has got to be the most panic-free January window we've had in absolutely ages
If we'd lost/drawn at Bolton and then not scored that last minute winner v Shrewsbury, the mood on here would be VERY different.

If we’d lost all our games, if we’d lost the playoff, if Lyle had played the last three games, if your father had pulled out…🫢😉

And if my auntie had bollocks we'd be discussing her on the toilets thread.

    We did win those games.

We might also have beaten Reading and Mansfield but didn't.

Because we're currently doing well, have a large and nearly all fit squad there is less urgent need to make signings.

Hopefully that means quality over quantity when/if we do sign someone.

I am certainly not feeling the urgency I have felt in previous windows. Don't get me wrong, I think we need a couple in at least but we are not desperate.

The lack of injuries is a major factor in that, as usually there are gaping holes to fill because of injuries. Extraordinary that the unwanted Ahadme is the only first teamer out injured at the moment.
