I've told this story before but my parents were from Hungary and one day, when they were out (I would have been about 12 at the time), I decided that I would allow myself to taste the contents of their drinks cabinet. A swig of palinka followed by a one of unicum really wasn't much of an introduction to alcohol and would probably explain why I've never really drunk to any great degree.
I can’t remember the name but it was Chinese spirit. I was told it was what diplomats used to toast at meetings. It smelt and tasted awful, fuel oil would have been an improvement. Even washing up the glasses returned the smell.

Wray and Nephew rum - even smells awful. Amaretto - I hate marzipan, Dr Pepper etc, it's that same.taste. Strongbow - it was the drink of choice for us at 17, 18 (as the local corner shop that would serve us did it cheap) and that's put me off, smells of sick to me now. Not a fan of tequila either, give me a shot of sambucca over it any day.

Winner.
Its called 白酒 - baijiu
We always got this out for a new member of staff. It’s amazing how people try to be polite when they are desperate to not throw up. They never wanted to ask for an alternative or question why they were the only person who had a special drink. Everyone else would have a glass of wine or a beer while we encourage the victim to say nice things.

We may have to agree to disagree on this Henry. It's subjective after all.

I can't stand cheap tequila, though I like a resposado or anejo...
