Injury scares aside, i'd like to see us go back to the Cov, Doc, Berry midfield and Godden back up top on Saturday for Leaburn. I've been critical of Doc for his limitations but he's a safe pair of hands and i think Gilbert may well be more effective from the bench. I get giving Godden a rest and Leaburn a couple of games to try and rediscover some form but we can't carry passengers at this stage and it nearly cost us last night. Back to the tried and tested for Saturday with Chucks back on the bench and we hopefully sign off for a little rest with a big win.
If Nathan Jones feels that Danny Hylton coming on is the correct decision then that’s fine by me, our striking options other than TC and Godden are hardly covering themselves in glory at the moment, he’s on to be a complete shithouse towards the end of the game and done what he needed to do to see the win out, I’m struggling to see what the issue is
I find the moaning about Hylton really weird. We've got a manager who has proven over the past few months that he is really, really good at judging how to see out games. In our last 5 games we have conceded one goal, and that was a bit of a wonder strike. Hylton came on instead of Kanu because we didn't need to chase down and press their defenders on the ball, we needed to make it so they didn't have a chance to do anything with the ball at all. We were a bit leggy, we sent long balls up for Godden and Hylton to try and get their heads on, we ran into the corner to waste time and our two experienced strikers shithoused, slowed the game down with free kicks and were just generally irritating for the last ten minutes. Crawley didn't come close to building up a head of steam and things felt calmer in the last ten than they did in the ten before that. Hylton isn't going to come on and devastate tiring defences but he is going to protect our tired team late on from the opposition building momentum and getting closer to forcing a goal. If Jones brings him on it's because he recognises the difference between the time for a young energetic striker and a ruiner, and last night called for the ruiner.

Not looked at forthcoming fixtures, taking one game at a time. Seen some comments about postponing a game due to international break in order to give the players a rest. I say don’t. Carry on while we have the momentum.

Nathan Jones said Lloyd is playing with injections and needs a rest, Josh is running on fumes, why risk them missing later games if we can give them a two week break to recharge their batteries before we go again. I can see the argument about momentum but imagine if we had to go into the play off games without Lloyd and Josh for example. It’s not worth the risk.

Compared to the schedule we’ve had, going back to one match a week will already enable rest. Two weeks is not absolutely necessary. It would be nice, yes, but then you’d have a 3 game week later on. Would that not then be potentially risking injury even more for the crucial final games?
If Jones is really in such a bad way then we should rest him by playing McIntyre in his place. I don’t like it anymore than you but that’s what a squad is for.
Postponing a game doesn’t mean that you play fewer games. It means that you inconveniently sandwich some games closer together. I think the disadvantage outweighs any earlier benefit.

ok, if we are all going to post crap like that then here’s my wild theory on Mile’s Leaburn’s recent games. It’s a bit left field but bear with me. His mum has been training for the run for the Prostrate Cancer charity. If I had to take a wild guess I’d bet meals at home have taken a turn for the worse and become, god forbid, ‘healthy’ with a vengeance. Now, obviously Miles didn’t get that physique by not watching what he eats but if you are going to run around for 90+ minutes you need to consume some things that make you feel good, not slim, because those are usually the ones that provide the fuel your body’s engine burns up if you are active. If that’s the case, hopefully things will return to normal, that or Big Carl will sneak him out for a cheeky Nando’s and Miles will be firing on all cylinders for the rest of the run in. He’s destined for big things and it’ll be good to see him achieve it, whether that’s with charlton or a much bigger side.

Yeah, I saw that. He let the ball run a bit too far across himself for the pass he was trying to make down the line and it went out. He was annoyed with himself. I also saw him getting into defenders' faces, catching them late before they could build anything and exchanging that for free kicks that they fed directly to Lloyd Jones and Gillesphey's heads, just like we wanted them to. I saw him moaning at the ref and eating up precious time that we could afford to lose and Crawley couldn't. I saw plenty of other Charlton players misplace passes, miss chances, misdirect clearances and overrun the ball, that's football, especially at this level. Here we are with 3 points though after the sum of all of the good and bad on display. I'm fine with that.

There has been a time when that probably could have been claimed and obviously there will be a time when it will be claimed again, which could well be the thinking behind Man Utd trying to build a much bigger ground now, but as things stand I suspect there just might be one or two clubs that could edge it in the big stakes.

I agree. Gilbert was everywhere last night and having an influence on the game. He might have done better in a few situations but he was able to cover much more ground than Berry does. I hope NJ sticks with him for Saturday.
It looked one of those games that were better live than on TV.
Charlton were comfortable and it always looked as though one goal would settle it. I shouldn't think Jojo will be too happy about letting Small's shot in but Charlton deserved the win.

Just because we won doesn’t mean every small detail went well. Personally I find it embarrassing watching Hylton come on for 15 minutes. He can’t run, the pass out of play was comically bad and if our gameplan is to give away free kicks (which is obviously isn’t) then what’s stopping me or you doing that?
As ugly and anti football as it may be, Hylton's role last night was that of a disrupter. He came on to slow things down, create a bit of edge and see the game out. He was on the pitch for five minutes of normal time plus added on. He made a contribution (yes, he kicked the ball out once but many players did). I trust Jones to decide what is the best tactic at that time of the game and who is the best player to action it.

Not pretty but effective and I thought we should have got at least one more goal.TC was well marshalled but got a new lease of life on the right. Gilbert was positive even if his end product wasn't quite there. Small did well on both sides and although I think Wollacott should have saved his shot, he did hit it with venom. Leaburn was okay can really learn from Godden's pressing and movement.
That was a classic polarising Anderson performance - either a 4 or 7/8 depending on how you score his gifting possession cheaply against his turnovers and defensive work. I'm on the 7/8 side, especially for his 2nd half display on a yellow card.
We were superb defensively, yet again. Gillesphey, Jones and Ramsay all excellent. Mannion really seems to be growing in confidence too.
Great game management from Jones, with the right subs and formation changes at the right times. On to the next one.
I've learned my lesson. I am not questioning any of Jones' decisions. Why would I? Why would anybody? Seeing as what we have acheived in the last few months.
We may have been in the top two by now if Jones had changed his hoofball style earlier in the season. Many on here were bemoaning our 'worst ever squad of players' earlier in the season, whilst a small minority of us were pissing in the wind trying to point out that the players weren't as bad as the football or results would have us believe. Tbf, we were without Jones and Ramsay for long periods, and they have certainly made a huge impact, but for whatever reason, I believe that Jones N, changed the style of play out of desperation and as a result of criticism, either by fans or closure to home. So all credit to the fact that he did acknowledge his style was nonsense and ineffective, but he should have seen it long before he did, just as the fans did. At least, some of us.
Absolutely loved that away win. Was there also celebrating my lad’s 18th. Popped him in a weeny Charlton baby grow as soon as he was born those 18 years ago and he has never looked back, through every peak and trough so far…

Singing it at such a speed suggests to me like they find it difficult to sing and take no pleasure in it. To sing it with pride is to sing it slowly.
Surely Lloyd Jones has the player of the season completely sewn up? His new contract was the best bit of business in January by far.
Certainly fortuitous that Gilbert missed the ball but he took up some good positions in the game and came close to scoring on several occasions.
