Very sad and hopefully he’s getting the right support from the right people and services. Child abusers obviously pray on the most vulnerable kids so it’s not hard to see what’s happened to him here.
I thought England should build a team around him at his peak. He was that good. I hope he gets his career and life back on track.
Whilst his career may have tailed off relatively speaking.…Considering what he has been through, to then push through as a person and become a professional footballer at Premier League, international levels….He is actually an incredible success story, and should be very proud of himself.
Good on him for being so open. Hopefully a turning point for the guy. Lots of respect for him doing that interview.
In my opinion, and I'm no expert, if he wants to continue playing, I think that would be a good thing for him. A distraction from some of the other things that are clearly going on in his life. A man manager that can put his arm around him and can offer advice both on and off the pitch. To boot it needs to be a family club I reckon. At whatever level he decides to come back on I wish him every success.
As much as he can be a good listen, when he fancies, this is where people like S Jordan can come across aa bullying people with a troubled past and current, without knowing anything about it.
Interesting to hear our former player, Mickey Bennett (now Dr Michael Bennett, Director of Player Welfare at the PFA for over 16 years to date) talking on Sky about why players feel the need to use sleeping tablets with the main issue being that these aren't, in most cases, being prescribed so clubs aren't aware that they are being taken. Quite how you stop that happening I really do not know.
I don't want to make light of this, I don't want to tell this as a joke. But it does feed into my criticism of Gary Neville, who is not an accomplished presenter, let alone interviewer (albeit one I would imagine Alli is comfortable talking to).
But.. reaching out and touching the man's exposed knee after telling the childhood trauma bit was ill-advised.
Why was it? He was showing genuine emotion and wanting to let him know that it was ok and he was understanding. He knows him and they've had a professional working relationship. He was just reaching out to him. I thought it was a good, human, thing to do.
Totally agree he was being a good guy but it was pure Alan Partridge.
Just made his return to football for Como after 748 days out.
Came on as a sub and got sent off after 9 minutes!!
I think that was his only appearance. He's now a free agent.
Roughly speaking, he would have to have a 90% wage reduction, but the question is, do you think he'd be worth taking a punt on?
Most championship clubs wouldn't want his signature and he's had enough chances to get his career back on track.
His professional career has completely dramatically sunk. Getting Charltonised is no longer possible. He's already f*cked.
I'd give him a 6 month contract, or a rolling pay as you play deal. He would have to adapt to our style of play.
He's probably far from match fit but talent doesn’t just completely disappear.
The problem is his mental health and attitude.
I’m mindful to not critique Dele too harshly, as he has been through a lot….But I’m not sure if a return to full time playing at Championship level under someone like NJ is what he would be able to keep up with.
He gets absolutely no judgement from me. The kid has been through a hell of a lot of trauma, a lot more than most of us would ever have experienced.
Poch was the father-like figure that threw an arm round him and without doubt got the very best out of him. Mourinho basically was the complete opposite and he went into free-fall. Someone at Spurs should have thrown an arm around him there and then. I know Eric Dier and Harry Kane did to an extent but it was up to someone at the club to take responsibility for him. Maybe they did, maybe he didn't want help. Its hard to know the truth.
It does appear the very bright fire inside him has gone out. Its so bloody sad to see. I remember when he first signed for Spurs, I can't remember a kid turning up like that with the amount of confidence he had. He was beyond his years. His performances against Arsenal, Real Madrid and Chelsea will be forever etched in the memory banks.
In all seriousness, I'd take him back tomorrow on a pay as you play deal. You can't teach the natural ability he has got. On his social media clips recently, he looked in great shape and looked really sharp. A friend bumped into him a couple of weeks ago in London on Sloane Street and he said he was looking forward to the new season as he was finally injury-free after so long, so something must have happened since for his contract to be torn up.

It's awful what he went through as a child, but still shocking how mentally he seemed to fall off a cliff from the confident and happy looking young man at MK Dons and at Spurs/England roughly around the time after Poch left. He was a key England player as we reached the World Cup semis in 2018, yet never played for England again after 2019.

Think he's finished at any decent level tbh.
Will probably get a contract some random Mexican or Australian team you've never heard of and still do badly, before retiring.
I mostly agree with the responses.
He's now out of the picture and he doesn't enjoy playing anymore.
Maybe if he got bullied a bit in training, it might at least ignite something.
