Love them or hate them?
I must confess I thought I was going to have a heart attack at Wembley as it was so stressful in 1998, and I was only in my 20’s!

It always seems to me that we only have them because the neutrals outweigh the number of supporters. So many casual football fans love the tension and excitement but if it’s your team involved then they’re a nightmare.
They should be scrapped because I think that there are far better solutions.
My personal choice would be a match count of goalkeeper touches. The team whose goalkeeper has touched the ball the least wins the game. This would encourage attacking play and discourage boring passing it around the back.
In the event of a draw, the team who’d been going for a win more would win. Both teams in extra time would really be attacking. Imagine the excitement as your team shoots, the goalkeeper saves and the other team records a ’goalkeeper touch.’ This would be shown on the scoreboard so all players and fans can see the situation. Teams would be desperate to get the ball away from their goal and force the other goalkeeper to touch it. Isn’t that what football should be all about?8 -
So you just spend 30 mins hoofing the ball out for goal kicks for the opposition so the keeper has to touch it? Our keepers do need to really practice their penalty saving technique, and indeed body language. Neither has the sort of presence that says to the penalty taker "I'm going to save it".5

Blimey, that's going back a fair bit, isn't it?
Was only two seasons ago though, we've faced 15-penalties in matches since that game
Maynard-Brewer (9-penalties, all but one in the League)
Mannion (3-penalties)

I prefer a more footballing method of settling a match. Golden goal was brought in for just that scenario.....but then the football authorities tacked penalties onto it so ruined the whole concept.
A golden goal should be just that. Keep playing until one team scores. Without the "safety net" of penalty kicks teams would have to try to score, otherwise if you concede you're out.3 -
It all depends if you win, then its a fantastic way to finish a season.0

4. 30 minutes extra time, with goals counting double.
This way, the game is either decided in the ninety minutes, or in extra time: goals scored on the pitch, within time decide the result, not a post-match shoot out.1 -

I've always thought that instead of a penalty shootout, there should be additional time where one player is removed from each side every minute. The managers should choose which player is removed and can decide to have an attacking or defensive set up during the extra period. The first goal wins the match.2

Instead of Steaua Bucharest winning the European Cup in 1986 by playing for penalties from the start against a vastly superior Barcelona you'd have Steaua winning the penalty shoot-out first and then trying to park the bus to win the trophy.Chizz said:1. Penalty shoot out before the game.

Said to my wife yesterday the only playoffs, I have witnessed us in, without a penalty shoot out was in 95-96.

The other option I like is that rather than just a plain old penalty the player is given the ball just outside the box & he is allowed up to 5 touches before attempting to score. Adds a bit more skill to it & the keeper can choose to come off his line and narrow the angle or try to smother the ball. The "penalty" taker then has options whether to go round the keeper or take a shot.
