Highest 1st day score is 506  - England v Pakistan in 2022. Before that it was 494 - Oz v SA in 1910 !  Oz also got 482 in 2012, again against SA and 475 in 1934 against England.

Currently we are going at roughly 5.5 per over. If....and big if.....we face all 90 overs today then we are on course for 495.

But slow over rate 🙄 means even if we finish at 6 30pm we might only face 85 or 86 overs.
We've not yet reached the first new ball of the Year summer. England have entertained with a thoroughly convincing four hundred and plenty. Records have been crashing all day. And yet we've already had the first moan about over rates.

    Never change, Golfie.
Well it's a law of the game that there are 90 overs in a days play (whether permitting). The weather is good today so there is no reason why play just cant continue until all 90 overs have been bowled.

There is a penalty for not bowling all 90 overs. A points deduction in the world Test table. I'm.sure that's really going to harm Zimbabwe  !

Imagine being at Wembley on Sunday & the game ending on 85 mins as there had been lengthy stoppages and it was time to go home.

All sports have rules & regulations .....it just seems that cricket dont apply theirs when there is no reason not to.

In golf there are penalties for slow play. They have officials telling players to get a move on. If bad weather intervenes players come back the next day to finish off their rounds. Last week in the PGA McIlroy had a 3 hour delay before he teed off in his final round.  They didnt tell him that he only needed to play 15 holes so that he could still have dinner that evening !

    a) Zimbabwe aren’t in the WTC

    b) 4 day tests don’t count in the WTC

If you’re going to moan, at least get your facts right
  • Got a ticket for tomorrow, should be good fun

looking at Stokes on the Boundary there, I think he is going to declare once Pope gets his 100.
The way this is going, probably bat another day if we wanted to and put them in tomorrow evening with three days to take 20 wickets
I can’t go Monday, do you want my ticket for £30?

So even more reason why they have no compunction to bowl 90 overs. No penalty at all.

I like being pedantic. In this scenario I'd  make a stand if I was the captain. When it came to bowl I'd get my bowlers to bowl just 10 overs an hour. Sit down & have a team meeting mid over.  Take the piss if you like.

Anyway.....as you say, it's my beef. Just like to highlight it because it happens all the time. Until one time it becomes really important, like an Ashes Test.

I do see your point. Context is important though, they are a bowler down and have actually caught up their rate significantly.

England really do take the Michael and to some extent that has been to their detriment. The flip side is they play entertaining cricket so hard to say you’re missing out when you probably get to see more runs scored when they’re batting.

The answer is probably to put in some form of fielding restriction but there’s no real reason for the boards to agree to it
  • To be fair, we have time wasted batting against the Aussies in a Test Match in Cardiff many years ago with "fake injuries" which riled Pontin so much. Thanks to that we survived a last man batting. I can't remember the players involved, but we play acted and time wasted. To be fait to Zimbabwe today, they had 2 genuine injuries to their bowlers. One who went off in a cart !
  • There is no law that says "there are 90 overs in a day".

Oh Good. Let's just bowl 75 & go home early for tea. Magic

Funny thing there is. On the final day.

You can bowl as little overs as you like during the first 4 days but woe betide you if you try to do it on the 5th & final day. Just ask Pakistan.

(And I remember England holding out for a draw against the Aussies. Final over bowled at 6.50pm).

do you believe over rates are an issue in cricket?

do you believe over rates are an issue in cricket?
Yes I do. But, generally, not on a day when 498 runs are scored in 88 overs.

Well I stand corrected then. Which law is it?
  • There is no Law regarding the number of overs. The number of overs come under Playing Conditions ( ie what applies to a particular competition or fixture) .There is no Law that applies to final days ..it is covered by Playing Conditions which is a different matter.

Same difference. Obviously matters to someone as the Test League table takes it into account otherwise England would be higher up.
  • So when do we declare? 600? Lunch? Give Brook a shot at a century?
  • I reckon we won't be batting later than 12.30. Give them 30 minutes before lunch.  We won't be batting after lunch. There is no point. Reckon we are likely to get 600 well before 12.30 anyway. It will be either 600 or 12.20 i reckon.
  • Declared.
  • About now
  • We have an answer. 565/6 declared

416 to avoid the follow on

  • So they need 415 to avoid the follow on?
  • I assume it's 150 behind because it's a 4 day game?
  • I assume it's 150 behind because it's a 4 day game?
    It is 150 deficit yeah
  • First test wicket for Sam Cook

    What a wondetful world.
  • Just checked the score. Good to see Zimbabwe making a game of it.
  • Stokes so unlucky not to get the wicket there, couldn’t have asked for a safer pair of hands normally
  • What a great moment, that cheer from Bennett is what cricket is all about
  • Has an older player than Woakes ever played for the Lions?
I saw him play for the Lions against the Australians at Canterbury in 2009 so probably not.

200 deficit in test cricket 150 in the county championship.
