    Is It gradually eroding away?

There's usually a good and bad side to everything but people should be able to voice their opinion.

I know there are Internet trolls and there are people who just want to cause harm.

It's just strange these days how relatively normal people get arrested based on what they write on the Internet.

    Let's agree to disagree....

    Actions speak louder than words....
Can you show me an actual case where someone has been arrested for writing something on the Internet that wasn't actually committing a crime such as hate speech or inciting violence?

It's not expressing controversial opinions that gets people arrested (as much as the media might lead you to thay conclusion) it's using those opinions to direct hate at or incite violence towards actual people

    Good point mate.

Here's at least one example. I will locate more.

     Don't trust the school mums.

Rule 1 of parents WhatsApp is don't say anything you don't want shared.
  • You can't restrict free speech for British people and allow others to say what they want. Anybody with a brain knows that aint gonna work

What ecactly is it you want to say but can't?

    Genuinely
I say what I think. I try not to annoy others as I'm not a ****
This is a difficult topic but I'm trying to state my opinion

It shouldn't get closed if people are sensible. It's a discussion that is needed
  • Freedom of speech is not freedom from responsibility. You can say what you want but saying some things leads to consequences.

Also look up the paradox of tolerance. Really relevant now.

With freedom of speech, as with most freedoms, it appears to be the ones that bang on about it the most who actually threaten it. Take the US for an example. Those who were campaigning for free speech for the last few years and setting up their own social media sites in the name of free speech are now the ones banning books, removing peer reviewed research and limiting what information can be in libraries and museums.
    And defunding and threatening universities.

It would be handy to give examples to support any view.

i can’t see this making the second page
Well an example would be Palestine Action.
Able to say what they want under freedom of speech and now they are banned and classed as terrorists
You’re wilfully distorting what’s happened in that situation.
Quite. Protest what you want, but attacking this country’s means to defend itself during this time of heightened threats in this world is more than crossing a line. Weren’t Palestine action behind attacking a Jewish business a month or two ago? Smashing the place up reminiscent of a very dark time in history.

No transcript of the messages. Sounds like they were threatening people. Not quite as innocent as they make themselves out to be.

    .

  • Ask the MET
They seem to have rules for union jack flags, Palestine flags, Israel flags etc.
It's amazing how free speech is allowed when it's wanted and then cracked down on when it's not wanted.
  • Here we go

  • If anyone wants to see how far your freedom extends pop onto X or Facebook.
You can post vile comments that no normal human would say in open conversation.
I’m all for reducing people’s rights and shutting down social media platforms that don’t regulate their members. The world was a nicer place when those who like to  spout their thoughts had smaller audiences. Freedom of speech comes with responsibility which adults should have no problem with and know what is acceptable.
That's the way Chinese social media works- everything is traceable and can ultimately have consequences. Works better.
  • You can't restrict free speech for British people and allow others to say what they want. Anybody with a brain knows that aint gonna work

Who are the "others"? Who is doing the restricting?

Having a hard time understanding what you are trying to say. Got a link to some kind of incident?

I agree, there is some awful stuff on those platforms and the owners don't do enough to stop it.

I saw a comment on a thread which made the most awful comment that ALL members a certain religion were rapists and murderers, amongst other vile comments. I reported it to Meta and thought I'd been successful in getting it removed, but a few days later, Meta informed me that the comments did not fall foul of their community standards. The comment I believe was removed by the original poster.

  • I see we have already had an appearance of "hurty words" for hurty words read kill and burn people... How can that be acceptable? I really do encourage a healthy debate but not one that is just statements of hate and threats these are not simply "hurt words"...

Do you really want me to post incidents or are you just wanting a silly argument?  There are plenty of examples of two tier policing going on. Look how quickly some people get arrested and jailed in some circumstances eg Southport.

Who are the non-British "others" who are, I  have to assume, not being restricted in their speech by UK authorities as Brits are?

Whatever you are trying to raise seems to have a specific incident in mind... so... am trying to get you to spell it for those of us who are unaware?

That’s the problem with social media, people get triggered and comment without thinking through the consequences of their words.
I sometimes wonder why these platforms allow such topics and the people who post them. Really it’s all a bit obvious, without outrage the audience and echo chambers would be smaller.

You are just acting dumb to try and make me say something you want me to say i guess?
Are you unaware of two tier policing?
  • Roughly 8-10 years ago

Some people (very small percentage) said that they thought Roland was a good owner.

It was an opinion that rustled some feathers and it was hard to understand, but it was still an opinion that they had - and should have every right to express it.

People should be able to say what they think and what they feel.

On the topic of hate speech, I don't really know enough about that. I'm guessing it's in reference to cult leaders or people who have a high influence over others.

I don't have twitter and can't say I care all that much.

Just want you to be up front about what you actually want to say

All good if you don't want to. I'll stop pushing
