I can honestly say that having been all round the world, in all sorts of places for many years, there is nothing like Europe - there are some impressive things around the world but nothing tops what we have here and anything they build elsewhere is definitely a second rate version of what we have here.
In terms of culture on your doorstep, absolutely.
Whenever I go to the USA, I always come back thinking that the quality of life there is so much higher than everywhere else. I could earn twice as much working out there, and a good sized house (in Texas for example) is far more attainable.
I agree with you to a certain extent. Lots of things are more expensive. However after any more than a week in the US, I come to the conclusion that there are too many Americans for me to put up with - I couldn't deal with them all the time!
Flying home this afternoon from a lovely 3 days in nice, we have an apartment here but as mother in law and her friend were over we got a small hotel in the centre, really nice and toasty without the crowds as next weekend is when tourist season really boots off am back out here for a week end of July.
Have just come back from a tour of NZ/Australia. Milford Sound and Uluru really are special.
But I climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was one of the best experiences I have ever had.
If you are ever that way then the bridge climb is a must do.
The bridge climb is awesome - took me five minutes to stop cracking myself though and I am not even afraid of heights. Think it was stepping out on the first bit on a hot balmy day but still getting hit by big gusts of wind.

Never had the bottle to do that, though we did walk over to the other side which was nice.

So what is the best holiday destination you have visited?
Real stand out, life time memory type thing (off the beaten track). I am thinking Philippines as since I was 21 and stupidly passed up the opportunity in Australia I have always wanted to swim with a whale shark. But an alternative maybe walking the whale trail or otter trail in South Africa; or a trip to see polar bears in Alaska.
I don't really enjoy the more traditional sitting by a pool/beach holidays; and have lived in Oz and NZ, and travelled extensively in South East Asia, and USA.
I was in Chile earlier this year. Santiago is a very nice and safe city. Very modern architecture and nice bars. Wished I had booked to stay longer. Only there for a couple of days (was there when Chile had a power cut) but also enjoyed 4 days on Easter Island…again recommend.
Anybody been to see the Veiled Christ in Naples? Will be coming from Sorrento via ferry, but the journey from the port to the church looks awkward. ( Walk Bus Walk) any advice or better suggestions gratefully accepted

Has anyone been to Andy Hunt's place in Belize?
Been to Chile?
Good call, not been but certainly on the bucket list. Patagonia specifically is one place I really really want to visit.

Not sure if Andy still owns the place in Belize but he’s now living in the Netherlands and working at AZ Alkmaar.
We went to Andy's place a couple of times - fantastic. Last I heard they were aiming to offload it, mean time it was available as a room-only option possibly.
Belize is brilliant, lots to do, varied.
Thanks, will look into Belize a little more. Shame Andy Hunt is no longer there. I did look 15yrs ago and one of the issues was no direct flights meaning it was a 30 hour trip each way or something daft Hopefully easier now!

Mmm, don't count on direct flights being available. It's a straightforward transfer at (for example) NY, Washington or Houston - but places like Costa Rica have direct flights and that's always hampered Belize. But it's definitely worth the effort to go there, even without Andy to host you

My partner said my tolerance levels were getting lower day by day, I found some of them extremely annoying, and customer service which they are supposedly famous for was lacking in a lot of places, rude and entitled sprung to mind.

Patagonia is awesome. Do the O walk. Life changing.
Now the fixtures are out, me & wife are planning a city break in early October. Was thinking Seville having seen the positive comments & recommendations by lifers on this thread. Have also heard good things about Cadiz & wondering if that would be better or whether we can combine the two. Also wondering if we could travel there by train rather than flying, although not essential. Any suggestions or recommendations gratefully received.
We took a train from Sorrento to Pompeii and I’m pretty sure it was going all the way to Naples, might be worth looking at? DM me for carriage numbers
I stayed in Naples a few years ago and took the train to Sorrento. Frankly Naples was such a hole, we took the train anywhere we could rather than be there. My best advice would be to stay in Sorrento.

Seville is a nice city and the airport is half an hour from the centre. Combining the two should be no problem, trains run directly from Seville to Cadiz and take about an hour and a half. Good info on both to be found on these travelogues made by Michael Portillo. https://player.bbc.com/en/brand/portillos-andalucia/portillos-andalucia-s1

Naples may perhaps best be described as “gritty”.
It's definitely the last time I'm visiting a place because it looked nice in a cartoon!

Trouble is you never have any time to enjoy it, as you are expected to work twelve hours a day, six days a week fifty weeks of the year...

Thanks Algarve but unless I'm missing something, appears that stream is no longer available on iPlayer in the UK !
Thanks Elfs, it is our 25th wedding anniversary so happy to splash out a bit, however, we are not very adventurous when it comes to travel & tend to rely on package deals. Decided we will visit a local independent travel agents next week & see what they can put together for us.

I stayed in Cadiz for one week. On the first day I was thinking I’d made a mistake and I might get bored. Fortunately, the place grew on me and as the days flew past I actually felt sad having to leave. The place grows on you with its alley ways and small restaurants. I did take the train to Sevilla for the day but found the city very hot to do much and just took the tourist hop on/off bus, had something to eat and drink and headed back to Cadiz.

Thats interesting. My wife and and I went before covid and quite liked it (apart from almost getting mugged on a tube train 😅)
