Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the signing of Joe Rankin-Costello from Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee.

Rankin-Costello, who can play a number of roles across the defence and midfield, arrives at The Valley following an 11-year spell with Rovers, where the academy graduate made 133 appearances across all competitions, including 115 in the Sky Bet Championship.

He has signed a four-year contract with the Addicks to become Nathan Jones’ sixth summer signing following the arrivals of Sonny CareyThomas KaminskiTanto OlaofeAmari’i Bell and Reece Burke.

Upon completing his move, the 25-year-old said: "The manager was really positive about the project and it made me want to come here straight away. I wanted a new challenge and I’m really excited to embrace it.“

Manager Nathan Jones added: "We're really delighted to get Joe on board. He's a player I've watched for a number of years. He's a really versatile and technically excellent midfield player, with good energy and lots of Championship experience. He gives us real quality in the midfield areas, plus he can cover the wider areas as well.”

Born in Stockport, Rankin-Costello began his youth career at Manchester United before joining Blackburn, where he progressed through the ranks to sign his first professional contract in January 2017.

Since breaking into Rovers’ first-team during the 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship campaign, he has featured 133 times in all competitions.

Sounds like he’s coming to provide competition for Doc from Jones’ words there

Interesting from Nathan. "He's a really versatile and technically excellent midfield player, with good energy and lots of Championship experience. He gives us real quality in the midfield areas, plus he can cover the wider areas as well.”

Sounds like we're still on the hunt for our Small replacement.

Locks up a player that seems to be very capable of playing in the Championship for 4 years.

    Good business.

Solid champ signing, he'll slot in nicely next to Coventry.

Good to hear how NJ sees him, seems he’ll be a central midfielder and cover elsewhere if needed, rather than a RWB who can be back up in central midfield.

I think some may have assumed he’s just a versatile workhorse type, but from what I’ve read and what NJ has said, he could surprise people in terms of being comfortable on the ball as well.

From what I’ve heard from a Blackburn fan, a few years ago when they narrowly missed out on the playoffs on GD he was in the running for player of the year.

He later played RB but would move centrally into an attacking midfield position, rather than add width.

He’s also spent time as a box to box midfielder.
More recently he played on the wing but it didn’t suit him as he doesn’t have the pace for it - that knocked his confidence, he came out the team and their current manager wants bigger, faster players.

Looking forward to seeing him play and how NJ uses him. Adds much needed competition in midfield for Docherty and Anderson, Championship experience, and cover for other positions as and when needed.

High energy, bit of utility and versatility, proven and experienced in the Championship, and still hopefully has his very best years ahead of him. Strikes me as a bit of a Lawrie Wilson type player (hopefully the later version not the early one.)

Probably not a headline signing but seems like a very sensible bit of business to turn the league one squad into a Championship one.

4 years is quite a commitment. We must have been very keen.

I worry about him coming South for the first time. He may take time to adjust, when we need him to hit the ground running. Tracey will need to earn her stripes.

Looks a good signing though as I'm not convinced Docherty is really championship material.

He had a choice of a couple of London clubs, Charlton and Chelsea. But said he didn't want to go to Chelsea...

I understand a Prem side were in for him but he said he didn't want to go to Chelsea.

He signed when Nathan Jones said "I want you".

Chapple wasn't included in his recruitment but NJ was watching the detectives.

During his trial he had to take a penalty but when given the ball he said "pump it up".

I don't think it's a bad thing if a player doesn't know much about his new surroundings in southern England.

If he hasn't got friends/family down here, it means he can just concentrate on his new job!

I think she has earned her stripes in spades, she just needs to do what she does best. Another "son" for the Leaburn household.
