Honesty thought he was excellent despite the loss his championship experience really shone. Need him to start vs Coventry

Unless you're one of NJ's former players, he seems very slow to trust. Hopefully JRC has earned it now.

It's nice to have a midfielder that plays forward.
  • Best player on the pitch today. A watching Pompey fan would assume he was a regular starter.

I’ve not wanted to write him off, but it’s been difficult in the last month not to doubt that it’ll work out for him here. There’s been no explanation as to why he’s not had more minutes.

Hopefully he starts again on Thursday, that box to box midfield spot is there to be taken. Doc started the season well but has his limitations, Anderson has potential but he’s still some way off what we need at this level.
  • Definitely showed more on the ball than Anderson and Docherty have offered all season

Wasn’t long ago that Anderson was the answer in that role. Maybe the reality is we don’t need one nailed down starter there but a bit of a rotation

Played alright but laugable the praise on him
  • He was decent tonight only pipped by Berry in my biased view as MOTM
  • If JRC can keep that up, he could be the player to change our season.
One of our major problems has been next to zero cohesion between the midfield and attack. Our forwards have looked isolated and have had to live off scraps.
JRC tonight was driving forward from midfield, picking intelligent passes, both out wide, but also into the forwards inside the box, then looking to pickup the return ball and then shoot.
Most teams have such a playmaker and it's what we've been badly lacking, especially since Carey went off the boil.
I just hope he now gets a run in the team.

A performance worthy of the praise, it's all relative. Compared to what we've been used to in midfield he was a revelation, getting forward, a bit of footballing ability and pinging a couple of decent efforts off on goal.

His off the ball stuff was just as impressive, he was critised for not making a run for Bell to play him in early on but watch that back and you see him point down the line to a run Kelman made ahead of him, Bell played it safe to Kaminski (which was fine)

His look left then right before he even got to the ball when playing through Bell who got the cross in for TC's header, Docherty or Anderson are turning inside and playing that 5 yards to Coventry or putting it out for a throw.

Would he be starting for the likes of Hull, Bristol city or QPR? No, but for a team thats been a league one side and looking to consolidate in the championship? Yes, he's a cut above if he keeps that up.

Jones has been having recurring nightmares about his performance in the Cambridge game maybe? If I remember rightly his corners were as bad if not worse than Bree's against Norwich, and he kept losing the ball in midfield too. Admittedly he wasn't the only senior player to have a bit of a shocker that night, but unlike upfront and at the back we've got plenty of alternatives in midfield

Was surprised how good he looked. Got around the pitch, broke play up and looked to get the ball forward. Not sure why he hasn’t been given more of a go.

There was no indication that he would get a start against Pompey but his cameo against Birmingham was an indication that he was close. I still wonder if personal circumstances played a part, maybe living out of hotels and travelling back north was having an effect, he looked a mile off when he first appeared. Let's hope that whatever it was is in the past, he stays fit and continues his form.
  • He probably won’t even make the bench next game knowing Jones.

I think some of the superlatives above are way OTT but he did have a solid 7/7.5 performance last night, would be interested in seeing him Cov and Carey in the middle three at least that's 3 players who can actually pass/tackle/keep up with play effectively
  • I liked how he looked for simple short balls into the feet of people in front of him, a few give and gos, it is bonkers how little we attempt those  simple things

He was fine last night, but all this talk of him changing our season and "he looks a proper Championship footballer" are way wide of the mark, Portsmouth were absolutely shit and there for the taking, that made him look better than he actually is.

Agree they were there for the taking, but unless we bring in a CM who’s even better I’d rather he gets a run in the side in that role over anyone else.

He’s never made a league appearance below the Championship, this is his 7th season at this level. For comparison Docherty had 3 with Hull.

There’s no doubt he’s a more technical and creative player than Docherty and Anderson, something we need more of in midfield and the team in general.

He isn’t the answer on his own, but he might be part of our strongest 11 for the second half of the season.

Much better on the ball than Docherty and Anderson, but probably not as good without it which is why he hasn’t been playing.

I think for Coventry I’d pick one of the others as we won’t have much of the ball and will be doing a lot of defending. But JRC should start again against Blackburn and get a lot more starts in the second half of the season

Would be happy to give him a run in the side , looks to at least have a bit about him going forward. Still think we need to address CM in January but JRC has at least given a few selection headaches with that performance.
  • Needs a run in the side until the end of Jan to see what he’s made of. Docherty and Anderson aren’t good enough for what we need good way to test JRC and if he also doesn’t fit the bill we go and sign a new no.8 on loan

The nearest thing we had to a silver lining in last night's pathetic shitshow.
Based on NJ's scatter gun approach to selections recently he'll probably warm the bench til Valentines Day 🙄

I only saw the second half, but must've watched a different game to everyone else... He was distinctly average, the rest of the team were just crap for the most part

I thought he was our best player last night he did well linking play and bringing the ball forward was unlucky not to score. Disappointing if he doesn’t start next game unless his match fitness excludes him

Looks like a Championship Scott Fraser.

    But... In a good way.

Looked a level above Anderson and Docherty, which makes sense, he has played over 100 Champ games in a solid Championship outfit in Blackburn, baffled that NJ hasn't given him more games to date

A noticeable factor under Nathan Jones management, has been that players generally seem reluctant to take risks, express themselves with the ball, by demonstrating flair or skill, or even taking on more than one opponent at a time.

Keeping it tight, playing it safe, adhering to the system, seems to be the order of the day.

Alfie May liked to roam a bit, in search of the ball, wasn't predictable in terms of playing to the system, and he was quickly shown the door.

Apter likewise, appears to be a bit of a free spirit, and has been frozen out for long periods.

JRC is the first player I have seen under Jones, other than perhaps Thierry Small, to take on and beat 3 defenders (at Birmingham).

He obviously has that in his locker which isn't surprising for a player that started out in the Man United academy.

I do wonder if the reason he has been frozen out for so long, is because Jones feels like he can't trust him to adhere to the system.

somebody who can do something outside of the system when the system is patently failing is exactly what we need (I would like to see more of Fullah)
  • TC is also perfectly capable of taking on and beating players. It is stifling both him and us to give him lots of defensive duties as LWB.

Back on topic, agree JRC deserves to keep his place.
