Proper experienced Championship player in the building. It also seems like it's one where it's the manager at Blackburn who has gone off him rather than him losing form badly over previous seasons or not being good enough. Seems like a really sensible good value signing for a team looking to establish themselves in the Championship
Seems like a versatile signing, but, it is another signing who comes with play time issues, let's hope we can get the play time out of him.
24/25: 29 Apps - 1237 minutes - 42 mins p/g
23/24: 27 Apps - 1674 minutes - 62 mins p/g
22/23: 24 Apps - 2010 minutes - 82 mins p/g
21/22: 10 Apps - 573 minutes - 57 mins p/g
20/21: 14 Apps - 1083 minutes - 77 mins p/g
19/20: 11 Apps - 697 minutes - 63 mins p/g
These are quite low numbers. I will say his goals and assists are pretty decent in that time, 6 goals & 13 assists, but it is still a player who doesn't appear to be available all too often. Blackburn fans seem to be saying the same also, as much as he is good.
If he is expected to start in our midfield, his record is a concern, but hopefully this is all behind him and he is ready to be a consistent championship starter, not a bit part player.
Good to hear how NJ sees him, seems he’ll be a central midfielder and cover elsewhere if needed, rather than a RWB who can be back up in central midfield.
I think some may have assumed he’s just a versatile workhorse type, but from what I’ve read and what NJ has said, he could surprise people in terms of being comfortable on the ball as well.
From what I’ve heard from a Blackburn fan, a few years ago when they narrowly missed out on the playoffs on GD he was in the running for player of the year.
He later played RB but would move centrally into an attacking midfield position, rather than add width.
He’s also spent time as a box to box midfielder. More recently he played on the wing but it didn’t suit him as he doesn’t have the pace for it - that knocked his confidence, he came out the team and their current manager wants bigger, faster players.
Looking forward to seeing him play and how NJ uses him. Adds much needed competition in midfield for Docherty and Anderson, Championship experience, and cover for other positions as and when needed.
Bigger faster players sounds about right for a Valerian Ismael side. They'll all be 6ft+ and pressing like mad. That will be an interesting matchup for us.

What we don’t know is how many of those missed minutes are due to injuries, and how many are due to not being picked, subbed on/off during games etc.
View 1 - potentially very good but inconsistent View 2 - really unhappy with that don’t understand why we’re letting him go. View 3 - get in there I’m well pleased he’s going twat. View 4 - hmmm not sure can be incredible and then meh. View 5 - I like him and sometimes he’s a match winner but not every week. View 6 - What! We’re fucked if you lot can nick our players, at least it’s not Nob End.

That's why I put the average minutes as well per appearance.
I don't know how many he has missed through injury or just not being selected, I can't find that anywhere (not accurately anyway)
Just based on what I can see and what Blackburn fans are saying, it just seems like it's a case of if he can be available like Burke.
It is obvious he has quality, but if we are signing him to start games, that's my concern.
Hopefully more to come, but overall I like this signing, very good alternative to missing out on Galbraith which shows a clear strategy and not just panicking.
Just in case anyone was wondering if they should make a joke about the fact Costello is also the name of some other famous people like Elvis or Lou I made you a helpful flowchart to aid with decision-making:
Blackburn finished 7th and just missed out on the play-offs so if we are Rankin-Costello, I would say the Northern club don't think JRC is top six Championship quality but a decent mid table Championship player who will do a decent job for CAFC and is the new Stevie Gritt*. Our aim this season is to get as near to mid table as possible 👍🏼
