  • If May lives up to his reputation, he'll do exactly what Washington did but with more goals. I think that at this level Washington will be useful for Derby but not a prolific scorer, and definitely not what we are needing ourselves currently.

Has this become the default now? Us having to justify why we should not sign an ex player after they've had their fun with the league above.

I'm not justifying anything. I was probably one of the more pro-Washington lot when he was here and I still think he's probably a useful acquisition for Derby.

But we have a different system and a new approach now so we simply aren't looking for a channel runner or a effort merchant, we need actual end product and that was never his forte. I never thought we could, would or should go anywhere near actually bringing him back.

Any one remember the Port Vale 4-4 at the Valley. Of course you do ! You were either watching Charlton TV or a dodgy link as Covid was raging and life had stopped.
4-2 down at HT after Amos lost sight of a couple of rockets by the 17 year old Kwadwo Baah.
Right, late on in the match and it's 4-4 which may have been the game Ronnie Schwartz scored ? Conor gets the ball on the right, (his best foot) goes around the keeper with half the goal showing and....... Puts the ball in the side netting and I kick the small table and cup of coffee goes flying 🤦🏻‍♂️
Mrs soapbox not impressed and that is my lasting memory of Conor Washington who left a stain on my mind and carpet.

Conor Washington is best in a two and Stockley was half decent when the two played as a pair opposed to when Conor spent his time running down the left flank.
  • Ronnie scored against Rochdale I believe.

That was quite an abysmal miss by Washington.

Is there a Charlton striker with a worse record one-on-one with the keeper? He must have missed 12 in his last season with us.

Yet at same time, could equally finsh one vs one in beautiful fashion - His goal against Morecambe example of that.
  • We would never have got promoted with him in the side .
  • I doubt he'll be as effective for them as was the remarkable McGoldrick

The definition of the word inconsistent that is :)

  • Has signed for Matlock Town.
  • Dropping 4 divisions, wow
  • Always thought he was shit. Ran around a fair bit but devoid of any sort of ability with the ball.

5 isn't it?  Championship to level 7?  Albeit I guess he didn't really play in the Championship for Derby.

Seems very odd when earlier this summer he apparently wanted to get back into international contention:

But maybe that one being close to Derby if his family are settled meant he thought about work/life balance more than level of football?

Checking Wikipedia, Matlock got relegated so will be in the 8th tier. It’ll be interesting to see if he moves up or stays at that level.
  • Good player for us
  • Always quite liked him
    Agree.
  • Decent honest player, you don’t play for the clubs he has if you haven’t got ability. Very odd to drop so low unless his body is shot.
  • 33 years old and over 500 appearances under his belt. Everyone has to finish at some point. If he had simply announced he was retiring no-one would bat an eyelid ("he had a good career" etc. etc."), but because he is going to keep playing, albeit at a lower level, it raises eyebrows.

  • Surely could of got a L1 or L2 move?
  • I thought he was good for us . Hard working and knew where the goal was .
  • Matlock is a class place tbf
  • Very weird to drop that far down the pyramid. Would have thought he still could have done a job in the EFL and stayed in that area. Could never fault his work rate

I was born outside Matlock......oh it was wedlock.

Or a NL club, where he could have stayed fully professional

Playing in the 8th tier probably doesn’t rule you out of playing for Northern Ireland!
  • Good player for us and one I liked, always gave his all on the pitch and got a few important goals, def not shit as had been suggested before.

Would have been ideal for this team under Nathan Jones if he was a bit younger.

One of the best Strikers at pressing the opposition that we've had in recent seasons - Conor's issue was the fact he was so inconsistent in front of goal, so didn't score as much as what he should have done at times.

Like Gilbey as well, he joined us when we were a bit of a mess what with the court cases and injunctions going on, we didn't have much of a squad, so in some regard it was a bit of a risk joining us at the time.
