Mad to think that he went back to Porto after the loan spell in 2002, won the UEFA Cup as captain in 2003 and the Champions League as captain in 2004.

Crazy that they even let him out on loan in the first place.

Special player. One of the best to ever wear Charlton’s colours.
I can’t recall exactly, but I think Curbs said joining us was a way for him to get his fitness up/recover from an injury.
He’d fallen out with the manager I believe. Then Mourinho came in.
  • A serious serious player. Couldn’t believe when he came to us on loan. A lot of great memories - not least when he scored against Spain in Barcelona whilst a player with us. RIP Tank

He wanted to play for Portugal in the 2002 World Cup and wasn't getting game time with Porto. Wanted to make sure that he was still in the managers plans & fit for the summer.

I very rarely comment on RIP threads but I have to on this one.
Quite simply the best centre half I've seen in a Charlton shirt in 50 years of supporting the club.
    So so sad
    RIP

He was some player. Sounds like he had a heart attack. Very sad at such a relatively young age.
  • Great player. This is very sad. RIP

That is such sad news. RIP Jorge - he made such a huge impression in the 5 months he was with us.

I was at Chelsea when he made his debut from the bench in the second half and felt an immediate sense of reassurance as soon as he entered the fray. He had been asked in a press conference earlier about facing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (then at his peak) and had informed the assembled company that “Jimmy never scores against me”. When that prompted some guffaws, Jorge said “Why are you laughing ? He never scores against me” - and, of course, he didn’t.

After he returned from us to Porto, he captained Mourinho’s side to UEFA Cup and Champions League wins in successive seasons. What a great player and leader.

Signed for us on the same day as Chris Bart-Williams who we also lost far too young.

Even before we consider how briefly he was with us in SE7, his is amongst the most memorable contributions made by a player in all of the 30+ years I've been attending.
    53 is far too young
Thoughts and prayers with his loved ones.
