Charlton Athletic vs Leicester City
Saturday 23rd August 2025 - 12:30pm KO
Referee: Dean Whitestone
Introduction
Given that I've been in Cornwall for the past week, I didn't actually expect to watch the Bristol City game, as a result I was tempted to write some fiction about how we were unlucky to come away with a solitary point, yet in this story
.. . Fiction became reality... with the Addicks recording yet another deserved clean sheet.
We welcome Leicester City to the Valley this coming weekend. If we've learnt anything so far, its that we've got the ability to upset opponents, and that we truly belong at this level!!
The Opposition
Name: Leicester City (11th) - Manager: Marti Cifuentes
Ground: King Power Stadium
Previous Result: Preston 2-1 Leicester
Its been nine years since we last faced our opponents this coming Saturday, and what an nine years its been... What with their dramatic campaign in 2015 to win the Premier League.
Unsurprisingly they weren't able to sustain that success long term, and this is their second return to the Championship ever since winning the ultimate prize in English Football. Leicester also return to the Championship with the prospect of a Financial penalty hanging over them, having broken spending rules two years ago, when they won promotion back to the top flight. Their sole campaign, like that of Southampton and Ipswich was anything close to being competitive, a sign of the potential closed shop that is the Premier League now.
Relegation also marked the end of an illustrious career at the King Power for Striker: Jamie Vardy, and its his goals that Leicester will struggle to replace the most, having fallen to a 2-1 defeat at Deepdale last weekend, whilst only just overcoming a severely weakened: Sheffield Wednesday by the same scoreline on the opening day of their season.
In terms of individuals, and its 16-year old: Jeremy Monga that could be one to watch, many fans wouldn't have heard of him until he became the youngest scorer at this level since Jude Bellingham of all people.
Charlton Team News
When your team wins its opening match of the season, it doesn't really make sense to make any changes from the starting eleven, even if the second string recorded a 3-1 win over Stevenage in the League Cup.
When Charlton travelled to Bristol last weekend, we possibly suspected a few changes, but it was understandable that Jones left the winning team from Watford alone. With a week between games, you'd once again expect to see few changes, if any at all, meaning we can expect to see Charlie Kelman and a Tyreece Campbell (with opposition fans raving about our Jamaican sensation) leading the line.
Elsewhere and there may be concerns about the fitness of Josh Edwards again, its two League games on the trot which has seen him withdrawn late on, each time on the advice of the Physio, so its possible he may well be absent. If so then you'd expect Macauley Gillesphey to return to a starting eleven that he's been so cruelly been absent from of late.
Kaminski
Ramsay - Jones - Bell
Apter - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Carey
Kelman - Campbell
Subs: Mannion - Gillesphey - Z.Mitchell - Costello - Anderson - Knibbs - Berry - Olaofe - Leaburn

  • Happy for same starting line up as previous two league games.

Has there actually been any update on Leicester's potential fine/points deduction since the season started? Think it would be better to give them the deduction as soon as possible rather than too far into the season. Unless Leicester are still fighting it and expecting to get away with it.
  • Narrow home victory
  • Zach Mitchell or Fullah on bench instead of Alex M.
    Draw, I think.
  • Feel this will be another good game and another clean sheet, can't see our defence being breached, probably over confident but going for  a 2-0 with Knibbs on the scoresheet...👌

I think we'll win this. Leicester haven't had a great start and our morale is good.
I'd like to see a line-up change, but knowing Jones that won't happen. Can't argue with the way it's turned out so far, but I think we could improve on that with a bit more fire power up front from the off.
We're 16/1 for promotion (Paddy Power). I suspect if we win this those odds may just drop a tad.
Won't be there on Saturday, sadly, as I'm off to a wedding.

    Congratulations James...🙄🍺

You'll have to excuse the weird formatting... Nothing I can really do about it this week... Just be thankful that you're getting to read an insight into my weekly waffle for this match instead :D
Disappointing to wait until Wednesday for this preview.

Guess you were relaxing too much on your CL all-expenses paid trip to Cornwall. Alright for some 😉

Would expect the same XI with Mitchell coming in for Mitchell on the bench. NJ not one to make changes when in the team is in good form, unless forced to by injuries.

Reckon another draw. Maybe a 1-1 or another 0-0.

Am surprised there hasn't been some mass manhunt, given that I somehow escaped the basement level at CL Towers

Had a read of the Leicester forum. Was expecting them to be quite confident despite the average start.

Majority seem to think we will beat them. Very pessimistic.

I’m not quite as positive. They still have a lot of quality in their squad. Fancy another tight affair and a 1-1 scoreline.
I wasn't overly confident, but I skimmed through 8 pages on the Leicester forum and after reading all their gloom and doom, I am now feeling quite confident.

The majority of Leicester fans are expecting a defeat and the optimistic minority are praying they scrape a draw.

And another bunch who dislike our manager!

  • 1-0 Charlton and we edge ever closer to survival. Can’t wait for this one. It will give us a better idea of how we stand.
  • Tough one this.  I know they’re in a bit of a mess following relegation, and they could be about to lose one of their better players to Palace, but I think we have to show something going forward in this one and should try to take the game to them.

If we won I’d be over the moon.  If we drew I wouldn’t be disappointed.  I think QPR next week is a fixture we’ll be up for and of the two, I fancy that one more than this for some reason

Oh to be a fan base that doesn’t rate a player that’s apparently worth £32m !!!! That’s more than our squad I would think
Worth and cost's are different things, £32m is just silly money, mind you they are dealing with that Selhurst mob, so explains a lot!!
  • Leicester are struggling after relegation. Old guard gone, new manager yet to settle and is making some strange selections, e.g. the woeful Okoli and not current Belgium international Faes in central defence.
There is nothing to fear here and I expect us to win this albeit after a tough 90+ minutes
