  • As the journalists said on last week’s CAST webinar, he is a momentum manager. We’ve certainly got that at the moment and long may it last!

Charlton needed Jones and Nathan needed CAFC.

Charlton were a depressed club with apathy and Nathan's career was on the decline after Stoke and Southampton.

The first four months his words didn't reflect what we were seeing on the pitch. But suddenly the 3-5-2 and its near variant started to work as vital player were fit.

Slade and Appleton's hands in pocket approach was never going to excite the natives but the crazy intense Welshman was the right fit as CAFC desperately needed to get back to the 2nd tier as much as NJ did.

Nathan will say OTT comments like he did with TC after his 3 best performances last season and if Bristol City are as clinical against CAFC as they were against Sheffield United then the roller coaster will start in earnest.

The press conferences will remain lively whatever the result and "may his God go with him"
  • That was quite an interview! You could feel the emotion about half way through. I think NJ “feels” Charlton in a similar way to SCP and it’s great to see. I’m sure he believes we can do better this year than the majority of us think.

I don't think that's fair. He had a great spell with Luton in the champ sandwiched between those 2 appointments, which got him a shot at the prem with Saints.  And then he was only at Saints for 4 months.

I'm not sure I agree with them entirely.  He clearly creates momentum and has done here.  He is then very good at harnessing and continuing that.. but they also said he hasn't shown he can turn it around the other way.. but he did.. only last season. So I think saying he is purely a momentum manager does him a disservice.

  • Always a good listen... Surprised he wasn't more annoyed with the lack of a clean sheet, and how Stevenage dominated the second half a lot more, especially when they made their subs.

I guess Nathan just "knew" though that it probably would happen, given the inexperience we also had on the pitch.

  • You can’t watch it obviously but Nathan’s comments to Cawley are well worth a read if you have the sub, he seemed much more open than usual
  • AndyG said:
I’m sure it must be an intentional change but NJ has looked much calmer in his interviews lately dare I say it but perhaps even portraying an air of quiet confidence! It’s great to see
Wonder if he feels more comfortable in the Champ and if he feels like he’s under less pressure
  • Had he failed with us early last season his CV would have been shot, that would bring it's own pressure.  Now he has reaffirmed his quality as manager and in a way the pressure is off as we are back to being a smaller fish in the Championship
  • I believe Nathan is more relaxed now that it's just away fans calling him a wanker and not Cafc fans giving him abuse that occured at times in the first half of last season.

Having a contract until 2030 give security and the Stoke and Saints experience can be put in room 101.

I like the way he keeps talking about the journey (not in the reality show cringe sense) and that this isn't our destination - as was mentioned on charlton live, he''s looking well for early 50's so all the intensity, stress and manic behaviour doesn't appear to be detrimental to his health - its the way he is and i don't think any of it is for show. I've not seen the stuff from his times at southampton and stoke but i'd guess that his refusal to keep his mouth shut and not respond to criticism is probably the root of the ridicule he may have got but again, i don't mind that - give me a bloke who is genuine and says it how he sees it all day long

    Good points made here.
In particular, the pressure to be a winning team this year will be nothing compared to last year. Last year, like every year in League 1, some fans demanded that the team roll most of the division over. Fan expectations this year are that we survive relegation - the level of meltdown after a defeat will be miniscule in comparison to last year. There are no Crawley Towns to embarrass us - a loss to any team in this division would be disappointing, but not humiliating.
This gives the manager and the team some breathing room. Pick up points where you can. If you imagine that we’re sitting in, say, 15th place at Christmas, a lot of us would be relatively ok with that. We certainly weren’t ok with being 14th in League 1 in December last year.

With one exception! Plenty of experience losing against them, and it's always humiliating.
