6 Music all the time at home, iPhone and a couple of bluetooth speakers deal with the DAB signal problem.

The station does over 2m now, so digital isn't holding it back anymore

Lauren Laverne accounts for over 1m of those listeners alone.
Good, can't think of a better three hours of radio in the country, she's excellent, the show is welcoming, the music always interesting, and you feel like you've learnt something without being patronised
Totally agree. Best music show out there for me. I work in commercial radio but the Beeb do get it spot on with this show.

Personally it is the Sunday programming on 6Music which is superlative. From Mary Ann Hobbs to Cerys Matthews to Guy Garvey and then Jarvis/Iggy/John Cooper Clarke to Maconie's Freak Zone. A lot of musical love and education delivered in a down to earth fashion. Thank the lord it is available on t'internet for when I am abroad!
  • Try 6music today at 7pm!
  • 6 music for the Craig Charles funk and Soul show is where its at

If you like some good old soul then Solarradio.com is the one.

No chat or adverts, and a great mix of tunes.
  • In my teens and twenties John Peel was required listening. Tommy Vance and one or two others were decent. I couldn't imagine not listening to these guys when I was young. They have gone now though, and if they've been replaced by anyone decedent, I've not found them. The only exception is Paul Jones on Radio 2, he knows his stuff and doesn't fill his programme with inane chatter (although he's been going around for donkey's years). I mainly listen to Radio 4 now. Like others, I learn about new stuff from friends or from the internet.

    thanks for that. great website!
  • There's a handful of digital stations I listen to, jazz and stuff. Never listen to commercial radio, it's mind numbing to me. Best to ask friends for updates on new music, they don't stop halfway through to sell me building materials.

  • I'm looking for a new music station to have on in the car. I usually have Radio X on as I like the sort of Indie and Rock that they play, but I'm sick to death of their restricted play list and need more variety. A lot of my friends listen to Radio 6 but much of their stuff is too twee and dull for me. Anyone got any suggestions?

Can't listen to Radio X because I find Moyles and, especially, Johnny Vaughan intensely annoying. I've recently started listening to Planet Rock, which I rather like. Only problem I have is that they play a lot of blues. I don't particularly mind blues music but when I choose a station called Planet Rock, it's because I want to listen to rock, not blues.

When Vaughan and Moyles are on, you get about 30% music and 70% talking, mainly about themselves.

Wasn't that always the case with those two? I don't mind moyles he does it deliberately with the chat rather than music. Johnny Vaughn does it as well but he's just not interesting or funny.. not suggesting moyles is particularly either but he is slightly better.

When it comes to radio I just listen to classic, radio 4 and 5. A lot of people I know listen to a specialist radio channel through their phones if in their car. X FM have a couple as do most on global radio. They have music with hardly any adverts and no talk.
  • Radio X is unlistenable, I just find the blokey blokey stuff a bit too much at the best of times, and then heard it a couple of days ago and thought it was off the chart bad

    Planet Rock on D A B ?
  • Thanks very much for the suggestions everyone, much appreciated. If I'm being honest though I could probably last a journey or two with any of those on, but not much longer. I'm really looking for something a little more niche and I suspect it doesn't exist.

Then I’d only hear Olivia Dean’s latest once a day and that really isn’t on.

    Spotify premium is good value.
This is not a paid ad
  • We had radio x on at work the other morning and my god its awful. About 3 or 4 blokes pretend banter, quizzes between themselves, laughing for no apparent reason...blah blah blah...and very little music. Got lodged fairly quickly.
  • Listen to 6 myself, not perfect but the presenters have an interest in music.

Knowing that Radio X was once a brilliant XFM, prior to its takeover by Capital is depressing.
  • Yeah 6 music generally works for me
    If not, Spotify
    Can't be doing with adverts
  • Sort your own playlist on Amazon Music and play that. No shit songs because you have chosen them all, and as narrow or as extensive as you want.

if not that, Absolute 80’s or 90’s. I like Bush and Richie on evening drive time. If you can ignore the ads for Octopus Energy (I would rather skewer my helmet with a red hot knitting needle than sign up to those cretins) then all is good.
  •  I like Bush

If you’ve got Bluetooth just play your own music.
  • Almost never listen to music on the radio. Talk, news and podcast are the norm.
Every now and then a tune sneeks in.
It surprises me, I always find a way to enjoy it, and usually happy for it to be gone when it finishes.

  • The Soul of London radio station seems to have stopped broadcasting on 97.1fm so having an old motor, can’t listen to it when in my car.
Anybody who can recommend an fm station in London who focus on 80s soul/funk, much appreciated.
