The tram line in Woolwich Market I remember only too well.bobmunro said:Diebythesword said:
Beresford square market is still going. The indoor market has been long gone. Still waiting on it to be turned into flats and a cinema.Solidgone said:
beresford square looking really nice now. Could do with that cafe moving in at the pavilion and when the poundstretcher building goes
I'm not old enough to remember trams, but I do remember the tram lines still being in the square - I'm assuming they have gone now.I worked on a stall on the High Pavement in the early 70s and the rails had only been tarmaced over. They had started to reappear. The barrow boys would load the barrow and then run down the slight incline to the market incinerator on the left. Me being a new lad thought this looked like a great idea and I proceeded to copy the older lads.
One occasion I “overloaded “ my barrow and pushed off, only for the barrow to be too heavy for me to control. The offside wheel got caught in the rut of the rail and proceeded to pick up speed and momentum. Despite the Policeman on point duty ordering me to stop I continued to pick up speed and despite wanting to go left promptly turned right and careered along Plumstead Rd.
My fellow barrow boys could hardly stand up.9 -
Around 2,000 phones and a secret room stuffed with electronics and £50,000 worth of games consoles were found after a raid at a phone shop in Woolwich.

Saw the aftermath of this. I’m sure most of the “phone” shops you see on high streets have a similar set up.clive said:Around 2,000 phones and a secret room stuffed with electronics and £50,000 worth of games consoles were found after a raid at a phone shop in Woolwich.

You could probably do the same with half the shops along Oxford street to be fair. Seem to remember the American candy stores being raided.0

The repurposing of the Waterfront site would pave the way for more much-needed housing and contribute to the council’s and the Mayor of London’s affordable housing targets.
I.e. more unaffordable shoe boxes.4 -
I remember the summer the Waterfront opened, the queues for the swimming sessions used to go round the block1

I get it needs to go but its kinda sad! Lots of childhood memories there!2

Was only ever going to be new housing. Prime riverside location and the council needs to pay for Woolwich waves somehow.Add it to the list of “planned development” in Woolwich, along with behind the new Woolwich waves, the island site, macbean site and the woolwich exchange site. That’s on top of the currently in development site in front and behind the Tesco.0

Of course it was only ever going to be housing. Its the affordable bit I have my doubts about.7

The developers will probably pay the council not to have affordable housing on the site & for the house to build affordable housing somewhere else.Curb_It said:Of course it was only ever going to be housing. It’s the affordable bit I have my doubts about.2 -
Blimey I still remember the old two pools in Bathway ! No slides in my days ! Got our fun from bombing each other! In the Winter the big pool was made into a bowls pitch! Loved the Waterfront when it opened - there was an amazing swimming venue near Dartford called Fantaseas that was the dogs!1

And all the lovely new doctors surgeries, hospitals, schools that are going to accommodate these people.
FFS, Greenwich has probably trebled in size over the past 30 years, yet all the aforementioned has declined.
No wonder people are upset.5 -
“Affordable housing” is a misnomer imo. Bit of a political master stroke by conservatives to make it look like they were helping to build affordable homes whilst suppressing the overall stock of homes, raising the prices anyway.Curb_It said:Of course it was only ever going to be housing. Absolute chaos at the moment outside of the QE hospital with roadworks and temporary traffic lights.Avoid if you can.1

The new Gents public toilet is not for the feint hearted or those who suffer stage fright.A cosy two man urinal and one cubicle is all it offers. And a couple of blokes just hanging around. For emergency only.1

Ah Waterfront! Good memories going here and then on the Woolwich ferry after0

Wimpy grill, and a rum baba frothy coffee.. Millionaire food for 17/6p. Fond memories.4

Can't say I was ever a regular customer, but I'm a little sad about this. That had been there for a very long time indeed. So long that I can remember attending lectures in the building above (then called Churchill House) which was part of Thames Polytechnic in the early 90s. I suspect it had been there for decades before that as well.1

I suppose the symbolic one will be if/when MacDonalds goes, being the first one in the UK an'all.1

It looks like the former Wimpy in Hare Street which became a Star Express Grill has closed as well.0 -
Some great memories there. Matchday routine would be football in the morning on Plumstead Common, Woolwich Wimpy and the market with my Grandad, dad would pick me up, off to The Valley.9
