I’m losing count of the times I come on here to read the post match thread and see comments like “thought we were outplayed for first thirty minutes” or “ they could have been out of sight by half time”, “we weren’t at our best” or “we need a midfield playmaker “. All of which is and has been true on occasions. What is also true is we are fifth in The Championship and more than holding our own. I’ll give you three reasons. We are I’d say fitter than 90% of the teams. We are truly a team not just a bunch of talented players. We have Nathan Jones driving us on and on. It makes us more than the sum of our parts and sometimes it gives us that extra to get us over the line. There will be exceptions and losses like QPR and Preston because we’re not the finished article but we’ll also do what we’ve done to WBA and Ipswich and Blackburn. Fans of opposing teams will say we’re a poor team and Nathan Jones will make more haters but we’ll be alright and although I don’t see us top six come the final reckoning I don’t see us bottom six either and this season we’d have all taken that.14

We're crying out for Godden to link up play between the midfield and the likes of Leaburn and Kelman. In fact we could also really do with a ball-winning playmaker who can pick a pass. Amazed to see Docherty start every game this season as I just don't think he is a championship player (along with a few others). Not an easy watch.
HOWEVER - this lot just never give up. The work rate and 'giving a shit' is there for all to see, kudos to Jones for that as well. The subs were great, suddenly looked less one-dimensional and the feeling that anything could now happen. Thought Hernandez was bloody impressive too and offers something different.
Good vocal support for us, and also the Baggies fans that came down.
The fact we dug in and won that with key players injured is bloody inspiring.
Feels surreal being 5th - tho as long as we don't go down I'll see this season as a roaring success.3 -
Nathan Jones is definitely the type to leave no stone unturned. I think it is absolutely mental to think he wouldn’t have a designated penalty taker decided pre-gameletthegoodtimesroll said:
With that ‘shuffle technique’ Doc did before he passed the ball to the goalkeeper I’d be surprised if the other ten players weren’t ahead of him in the pre-determined list to take a penalty 🤣NabySarr said:
Penalty takers will 100% be decided before the game. Docherty must have been the nominated taker. Leaburn has scored a pen for us before, I’m sure he’d have wanted it but it would have been pre-decidedletthegoodtimesroll said:
It looked like nobody wanted to take it and as Captain he had to step up to do it.WestStandPete said:Let’s be honest. The football wasnt great but what we do have is hard work, commitment & Sonny Carey ! Not to mention the rock that is Lloyd Jones. With those ingredients we’ve always got a chance. Campbell for me isnt strong enough for this league & should just be a late substitution against tiring defenders. So nice though to be the team that now gets late winners rather than the team conceding them ! I do believe though that our quality will improve as we adjust to life in the championship. And Greg, as brave & honest as you are , please don’t offer to be the penalty taker again mate !
its more damning that we didn’t have a striker on the pitch that was front and centre trying to grab the ball the moment the Ref gave the penalty.
We don’t want to be one of those teams where players are fighting over the penalty, our dressing room is better than that.
that only cemented my initial thought that he looked like he only picked the ball up because he was the Captain and nobody else wanted it

That post match interview from NJ is a belter. What a club10

We might consider it if we have scouted an as-good replacement at the same or less money. The new contract was a statement of intent.CharltonManor1966 said:
Budget-wise they are way ahead. If either offered 6-7 mill for Jones in January the club would have to consider it? He is 30+gringo said:

100% no other player wanted that penalty and fair play to Docherty as Captain he took it, such a shame after scoring his first goal Saturday Kelman was injured as he would have taken it, it was a shit penalty his body shape showed where it was going, but that is a game we would have lost in the first half of last season, after years of shit just enjoy the situation we find ourselves in.11

I think when people except we aren’t going to be the most beautiful side to watch and realise that making sure we are in the game for as long as possible first and foremost is NJ’s priority, the less surprised they will be that we have Knicked the game, I mean it’s not a new thing we did it last season and now we are doing it again. For what it’s worth I think we do play some good stuff at times but I love how we dig in aswell, I’m really enjoying watching us evolve.ShootersHillGuru said:I’m losing count of the times I come on here to read the post match thread and see comments like “thought we were outplayed for first thirty minutes” or “ they could have been out of sight by half time”, “we weren’t at our best” or “we need a midfield playmaker “. This season is looking so tight I suspect a number starting with ‘3’ could well turn out to be sufficient this time around, though I wouldn’t want to test that if we did end up being one of the teams fighting relegation.Bedsaddick said:

Behave were going up as championsAFKABartram said:Fear that many people’s expectations for performances are rising far too quickly. The quality of organisation we are coming up against is literally a different league to last season. Teams know our style and strengths now the season has settled and are increasingly setting up out of possession to combat / frustrate that.
7 of our starters last night were L1 players last season. So we’re Knibbs and Olafe, while Fullah an U19. Of the others. Hernandez started just 4 games last season, Bree 9 games, it’s only Kaminski who played consistently at this level.
The step up has been fantastic, but there needs realism with it.3 -

Fair play to Doc for taking it. There were 2 strikers on the pitch, and they both shied away from taking it. I thought strikers only metric was goals scored?
If either Kelman or Godden were on the pitch, do you think Doc would have got the ball out of their hands? He'd have had to kill them first...
There is absolutely no way a manager as meticulous as Nathan Jones who thinks about every tiny detail; hasn't already got a dedicated penalty taker. The strikers didn't shy away, they knew that Docherty was Jones choice for penalty taker imo.
An odd choice and, as it proved the wrong choice.
Of course, if Godden or Kelman were on the pitch I am sure Jones would have them as dedicated penalty takers.8 -

It was a good save but one of the best? I would expect a Charlton keeper to have kept that out. What he did well was directing it away from the danger area rather than just her a hand to it and hopeRonnieMoore said:Unexpected 3 points given the way the game had gone .. the keeper making a massive mistake after producing one of the best saves ever seen at the valley … but this was not pretty , we had nothing up front there was no press WBA centre back had a easy evening .. it was shocking performance from Leaburn and Campbell …. Second half was better Fuller coming on like a breathe of fresh air .. but our final ball was awful tonight main culprits Bree and Campbell … But shot out of nothing and somehow it went under the keeper …. We take it … but NJ you have to make changes on Saturday it’s time for Apter , Olaofe and Knibbs to get a proper run in this team1 -
If Doc was the dedicated penalty taker he would have picked the ball up or have been given it straight away. That looked like a nobody wanted it scenarioAthletico Charlton said:SteveACS said:Just a comment about the penalty...

Apart from last year. And the year before. The year before that you might have stayed up on goal difference. We went down on 48 points in 19/20, it would have taken you down in 16/17 and potentially 13/14 as well. 44 points is no guarantee of safety at allBedsaddick said:

Nothing we are doing suggests we need to look over our shoulder, in fact it’s completely the opposite to this.3

Luton went down last season on 49-pts, and that was on Goal Differencebolloxbolder said:

I think 50-pts is the real safety net that I'd be aiming for at the moment... We're pretty much half way there as well, Luton went down with 13-wins / 10-draws, we've got 6-wins / 5-draws.7 -
Some of the world’s greatest players have missed penalties. No disgrace and shouldn’t in my view attract anything more than disappointment.12

Godden and Kelman must be the regular penalty takers. I think doc was just trying to be a captain and lead from the front. Next time, I hope he leads from the front by giving the ball to Carey and telling him to smack it!!!EugenesAxe said:
Why did he take it, did all our forwards back away?mendonca said:

Greg Docherty has never scored a penalty in open play or a shoot-out during his senior professional career.
10/10 for bravery, but never again please.6 -

Carey’s interview confirms it was Docherty that was down to take them.I would guess that every attacking player we have would want to take them7 -
LJ has been given carte blanche by NJ just to clear the ball anywhere. Most managers at a higher level would expect a pass or header directed to another teammate. I don't think there would be a big queue for him, perhaps Wolves or a big spending Championship side.crookester said:

Such a shame the Lloyd Jones thread is still closed. We know he follows social media and probably this board.
@aliwibble. Any chance of it being reopened for fans to credit our colossal CB?3 -
Obviously I am happy with the start we have made but I would make a very slight change to the formation due to injuries and to fit the players we have.We haven’t replaced Small with his strong runs, bree is doing very well but he isn’t a ball carrier like small. Edwards injury has lost our cover and support for Campbell.
i would go 3-4-2-1. I think we may have tried this last night with the substitutions.
this would comprise of Carey plus one from knibbs, Campbell, apter with fullah an option from the bench behind the main striker.Tanto could also possibly play this role
careys engine will allow him to drop back to make a 5 if needed. The other players all add a bit of flair and creativity.
the 2 between the midfield and attack all offer something different but would need to cover a lot of ground.0
