I'm just not buying this Docherty took the pen by default argument. They are professionals, not the Dog and Duck XI. One of the criticisms of this team is that not enough goals have come from our forwards. Each and every one of them should be absolutely relishing the opportunity of a one on one with the keeper. If they aren't, then I don't think they are the sort of players who would have the character to fit into a Nathan Jones team.5

agreed - I think this break is going to come at a very good time for us.CaptainRobbo said:Even though I'm not a big fan of the International breaks, I think they have been good for giving the squad some rest and recovery time just when needed.
Jones' style of play requires the players to give their all every game.
Hopefully Matty Godden will return soon after the next one.
Any news on Bell's injury?
If we could just nick a point Saturday and keep the momentum going that would be huge7 -
Would be even more huge to knick 3pts😜Elthamaddick said:

I see we are now the only team in the division who are undefeated in their last five.4

I couldn't believe it when he had the ball - was half expecting him to do what some teams to and then hand it over to someone (Carey) at the last minute. He didn't look confident at all.northstandsteve said:100% no other player wanted that penalty and fair play to Docherty as Captain he took it, such a shame after scoring his first goal Saturday Kelman was injured as he would have taken it, it was a shit penalty his body shape showed where it was going, but that is a game we would have lost in the first half of last season, after years of shit just enjoy the situation we find ourselves in.
The strikers should be fighting over taking those, especially given their lack of goals - but for me Carey is 100% our pen taker - I'd also have thought Bree would've fancied it4 -
They way Knibbs hijacked Charlotte's interview with Carey last night, so he could join in with the celebrations exemplifies the team spirit and unity within the squad.

A lot of people dissing Campbell for his performance last night.
Okay, it wasn't his best and WBA made sure he was closed down quickly and blocked off ...but boy, did that lad work hard for the team, especially off the ball, pressing and defending from the front.
He's also a vital outlet to relieve our defence under pressure.
Campbell plays to NJs instructions and sacrifices much of his natural flair for the team effort. Don't people see that?
After the changes, with Fullah and Knibbs coming on, NJ changed the team shape up front, allowing Campbell more to play his natural game - and straightaway he became more of a threat out wide, contributing greatly to our attacking threat.
He's a lad of 22. Cut him some slack.
He's doing what NJ tells him to do.

Well put. It’s the reason NJ tends to avoid subbing him off, does what he’s asked to a teeOggy Red said:A lot of people dissing Campbell for his performance last night.

46 points from 19 home league games this year with a cup win against Stevenage and playoff semi final against Wycombe added on top of that. 16 wins, 4 draws, 1 loss from 21 games. Absolutely incredible how quickly The Valley has turned from a toxic ground with 6,000 fans in it into a fortress. Teams hate coming to play us here7

Couldn't make it down last night but so wanted to be there and be singing the Sonny Carey song at the end!
Conor is growing into a good Championship player by the game. He seems more confident on the ball, defends really well, finds space, drops back deep to receive the ball, turns this way and that to make space and is finding his way much better on picking the right pass.
When the season really gets going, circumstances, injuries and whatnot can change things.
There was Apter ready to come on and then Bree gets back up and carries on...... well done him and the physios.
We get Fullah & Knibbs with Carey and Conor, Tanto alongside TC...... our link play flowed better and was more effective when forward facing.
Forget the goal, it all seemed a bit more like it than it had for much of the game.

He did. I don't know what you were watching, but he had the ball in his hands for ages as he walked towards the spot, in the manner of someone who was clearly the designated penalty taker.letthegoodtimesroll said:
If Doc was the dedicated penalty taker he would have picked the ball up or have been given it straight away. That looked like a nobody wanted it scenarioAthletico Charlton said:SteveACS said:Just a comment about the penalty...
Fair play to Doc for taking it. There were 2 strikers on the pitch, and they both shied away from taking it. I thought strikers only metric was goals scored?
If either Kelman or Godden were on the pitch, do you think Doc would have got the ball out of their hands? He'd have had to kill them first...
There is absolutely no way a manager as meticulous as Nathan Jones who thinks about every tiny detail; hasn't already got a dedicated penalty taker. The strikers didn't shy away, they knew that Docherty was Jones choice for penalty taker imo.
An odd choice and, as it proved the wrong choice.
Of course, if Godden or Kelman were on the pitch I am sure Jones would have them as dedicated penalty takers.
It would have been disgracefully unprofessional if other players had argued with him over who to take it.7 -

So this thing about selling our own players, which this week is LJ and Fullah, and I'm surprised it hasn't included Carey, it usually has. I realised it's unfair of me to call it bed-wetting as I was last night, when I was doing a fair bit of that about Alfie May; albeit that was more because I wasn't smart enough football wise to see what NJ wants in that role.
But if we seriously think that we deserve to be where we are, and that we are on a path back to where we ought to be (as NJ and the board keep saying) then we've got to stop thinking small -time. Yes the biggest clubs hoover up young talent, or in LJs case mature talent. But it's not a given, it's case by case, according to the club's finances, whether the owners are investing, whether they invest smart (two different things), and how productive the academy is.
So to try and bring some rational evidence to my argument I spent a long time struggling with AI to get an accurate list of the Sunderland ins/outs from the time they returned to the Champ in 22-23, to last season when they got back to the FAPL. And by the time they got out of League One, they were not a parachute club. Yes they had rich new owners, but Ellis Short was rich too and plowed millions into them which he wrote off on quitting (£170m)
Sunderland in the Champ this time round definitely did not sell either their best players or talented youngsters in order to fund a squad to get them promoted back to the FAPL. On the contrary they bought talented youngsters (it looks like their academy has not produced much in this time). The most obvious example is Jobe Bellingham but there are several others aged around 19-21 whom they bought, often from European clubs. They've sold Bellingham now, but from a position of strength (and an ROI of 200%).
We are in a position now where we need only sell if NJ is happy to sell, and has an available replacement lined up. Sure if some club is idiotic enough to offer £7m for a 30 year old centre-back who has never been above this level, we can "consider" it. For about 10 seconds. And then we can politely invite that club's representatives to enjoy some sex and travel.
Fullah is a different case but if Sunderland with no parachute money, can bring in and hold young players in the Championship, why can't we? Sure they're a "big" club. But we beat them at Wembley in 2019, and usually found them one of the softer opponents in the FAPL years. They are not that big. So more politely, I repeat, let's us fans all grow a backbone. It's no more than NJ and the board deserve to see.

Will be called out for negativity here, but this is confirmation bias / outcome bias. A deflected goal through the keeper's legs with 5 seconds left is wonderful but cannot be the game plan and should not be enough to throw out 90 minutes of what we witnessed prior to thatDistantAddick said:Again didn’t play particularly well again but came away with all three points. What Jones has built and is still building is so special. What they may lack in skill they make up for in hard work and effort.
Had we have drawn I would have questioned why subs were made so late as they changed the game in the last 15 minutes especially Fullah who looked like an experienced championship player. But who am I to question the Welsh wizard whose game plan once again worked out perfectly.
Nothing needs to be said about Carey, he is an absolute revelation and fastly becoming our most important player alongside Lloyd Jones. My only worry is the reliance on him for goals, TC and Leaburn largely ineffectively today but do feel sorry for Miles just getting long balls pinged at him all night. He does what he can!
Anyway, another tough game Saturday, we come away from this three game week with 5 or 7 points it’s another good return.
Our defence is wonderful and I love the fact we are building from the back. But we should aim to play better, control games for longer and earlier periods and I think we are capable of that with the personnel we have and some varied tactics, obviously not every game can be controlled but I think we have ridden our luck the last few weeks and it might run out at a point, hopefully we'll find another gear again performances-wise post international rest. The results and position we have got ourself into and the very average quality of the division of a whole should be realigning our objectives and hopes for the season2 -
We held on to young players and LJ among offers from other clubs in January, no reason that will be different now when we’re a division above

Another NJ stamped performance. Gut busting efforts by the midfield and solid at the back. Just hope the first teamers can keep up with that level of effort or we might have to start using some of the youngsters again. Although if they all come with the explosive impact of young Fullah, then that might not be such a bad thing.
A few consistent themes came out of last night's performance.
Charlton are dangerous in injury time.
L Jones is an outstanding performer and the one player we really would miss if injured or suspended
Campbell is not a back to the goal type of player (such as Kelman or Godden) and thrives on pace and space which he got once he moved into tandem with Fullah (and when he came on against Ipswich).
And Carey is fast becoming the deal of the century!6 -
I reckon Kelman will be fine for the travel to Wrexham on Saturday. My guess is he enjoyed his goal, and birthday celebrations, a little too much to be ready for a mid-week game, and NJ just said, "NO!" plus he'll now be fully rested for the visit to Wrexham.
In addition to this Wrexham play away to Portsmouth tonight, so with an extra day to rest, here's hoping we're slightly fresher as a team, but we did all think this against Swansea

Against this we have to accept that we have a (very good) squad which costs a fraction of those of a large chunk of the division. This inevitably means we have to play to our strengths and also that we are more prone to problems when the injuries come, as they will. The one I worry about replacing is Lloyd Jones ...paulsturgess said:

Yes, we have ridden our luck but it can also be said you make your own luck. We certainly have nicked wins but equally we lost to Leicester in a game we dominated.
I don't accept the division is very average. I think what is being shown is there are a lot of sides with not much between them and to me that's a great division, certainly better than the annual tedium of the Premier League. And had a couple of results gone against us we'd be in the bottom third and saying how tough it is.6 -
Yes that’s negative, we can’t be that lucky for that long. There’s a game plan and a structure and NJ has often in post match interviews mentioned how he accepts the opposition to have the ball more.paulsturgess said:
