  • The big lump forward 62 times a game with it sticking once in a blue moon is fairly tiresome to watch, but loved that last minute winner and we can't complain too much with our start to the season overall.

I do hope we see a little more of the attacking play we saw second half against Ipswich soon.

We held on to young players and LJ among offers from other clubs in January, no reason that will be different now when we’re a division above
And doing really well, we have owners that realise that the investment they have made is more likely to reap rewards the more successful the club is. Offers would have to be particularly good to think about selling players.

Another fun moment was the reaction of the crowd early in the game when Hernandez killed that long pass stone dead.
    It was a collective ‘whoar’.

Conor is doing great, would love to see him have a few more shots when in a good position which he finds himself in quite often. That’s not a criticism just an  observation.

One thing about Carey's goals are that 1) They are generally on target and 2) Always on the floor. Compare that to , say, Swanseas shooting last Sat where virtually all of their shots went over the bar.

Imagine if LJ had gone to Wycombe how he would be feeling right now ?!

How telegraphed was Doch's penalty...? I keep watching it back, it's hilarious. I really can't believe he's the designated taker - no way.

Another brilliant result but not getting carried away with any expectations. Just trying to enjoy this season and take what comes. I would've been happy to avoid relegation at the beginning so this has been fantastic so far.

Nathan Jones found this club lying on the floor with only a slight pulse, and has relentlessly CPR'd us back to life.

Made it completely obvious where he was going to hit it so no surprise it got saved....

Yep, dreadful pen. Godden and Kelman probably the two designated pen takers but would've defo preferred Leaburn or Carey to take it yesterday. Would've probably backed Hernandez over Doc as well

Not very nice to call Leaburn that.
    Now if it was Stockley...

He took and scored one this pre-season. Godden and Kelman are probably the top 2 options but Docherty must have been high on the list, at least higher than everyone else on the pitch. He will definitely be a lot lower now though

Taking them on a training ground and taking them in a tight match when it's 0-0 are two different things. Maybe he knocked in 10 out of 10 on the training ground and then got the yips last night. It happens.

Brilliant! But I don't think he would agree with it!
Yeah, but he's been dead for two thousand years 😉
    I meant Jones!
I assume you mean, he would not agree with it as I have used JC rather than God himself?
  • So this thing about selling our own players, which this week is LJ and Fullah, and I'm surprised it hasn't included Carey, it usually has. I realised it's unfair of me to call it bed-wetting as I was last night, when I was doing a fair bit of that about Alfie May;  albeit that was more because I wasn't smart enough football wise to see what NJ wants in that role.

But if we seriously think that we deserve to be where we are, and that we are on a path back to where we ought to be (as NJ and the board keep saying) then we've got to stop thinking small -time. Yes the biggest clubs hoover up young talent, or in LJs case mature talent. But it's not a given, it's case by case, according to the club's finances, whether the owners are investing, whether they invest smart (two different things), and how productive the academy is.

So to try and bring some rational evidence to my argument I spent a long time struggling with AI to get an accurate list of the Sunderland ins/outs from the time they returned to the Champ in 22-23, to last season when they got back to the FAPL. And by the time they got out of League One, they were not a parachute club. Yes they had rich new owners, but Ellis Short was rich too and plowed millions into them which he wrote off on quitting (£170m)

Sunderland in the Champ this time round definitely did not sell either their best players or talented youngsters in order to fund a squad to get them promoted back to the FAPL. On the contrary they bought talented youngsters (it looks like their academy has not produced much in this time). The most obvious example is Jobe Bellingham but there are several others aged around 19-21 whom they bought, often from European clubs. They've sold Bellingham now, but from a position of strength (and an ROI of 200%).

We are in a position now where we need only sell if NJ is happy to sell, and has an available replacement lined up. Sure if some club is idiotic enough to offer £7m for a 30 year old centre-back who has never been above this level, we can "consider" it. For about 10 seconds. And then we can politely invite that club's representatives to enjoy some sex and travel.

Fullah is a different case but if Sunderland with no parachute money, can bring in and hold young players in the Championship, why can't we? Sure they're a "big" club. But we beat them at Wembley in 2019, and usually found them one of the softer opponents in the FAPL years. They are not that big. So more politely, I repeat, let's us fans all grow a backbone. It's no more than NJ and the board deserve to see.

I agree but has our resilience been tested yet ? Don’t see LJ being a target for any Premier League club but I could see a parachute payment club looking for a quick return having a look. I don’t think it will happen though. As for Fullah, he’s probably only another ten appearances away from alerting probably every Premier League club. He’s no doubt already on the radar of some. The reality is also that yes our owners can stay firm and I’d like to think they will but just like everything else in life money talks. It’s not just CAFC holding firm it’s whether or not the boy has his head turned. He wouldn’t be the first. We all know he could probably increase his salary x 10. Would it benefit his playing development ? Probably not but again he wouldn’t be the first to ignore such advice. It’s not really about growing a backbone but more about accepting Charltons place in the pyramid. I’m optimistic that both will start next season with us but we also need to be realists.
  • A few random musings from last night

Connor Coventry was terrific and I haven't seen anyone mention it, thought he was the only one desperately trying to make something happen in a pretty turgid first half where WBA really weren't allowing us to play, he kept finding space in tight pockets to get us moving, so so important to this team.

Carey got into the game much more when he moved into Docs position, it allowed him to find a bit of space and push forward with the ball which he hadn't been able to do in the attacking midfield position.

Gillesphey is incredibly slow. I love him to bits, he's a great defender but his lack of pace is the reason Bell is 1st choice over him when fit. Once a player manages to get away from him he just can't catch up.

Jones incredible again, Kaminski is a brilliant shot stopper, Fullah incredibly exciting. A brilliant night under the lights.

    At the game.

As much as I accept all this ‘we are happy without the ball’ stuff from people who know more about football than me, the last couple of games have been uncomfortable to watch – feel like we are chasing shadows at times.

We are not getting to second balls as much as we were - both against Swansea and West Brom.

Thought Doch struggled, and never want to see him take a pen again, but he shouldn't be scapegoated for it - didn't like Jones's comments there.   Not a co-incidence we looked better on the ball once Carey dropped deeper and Fullah came on?

Bree was similarly ‘off’, ha!   Foul on him should have been a yellow - ref was shite.   Most ridiculous rule in football the player who is fouled has to go off.

Energy levels better towards the end of the game than they were on Saturday though. Defence all did very well. Spirit of this team and management not in question.  Connection between fans and squad again, at last.

Thought attendance a bit disappointing, as it was on Saturday.   How do we get more people to come? However, those who were there did well - atmosphere at the end was amazing and I went mental.

The first thing I look at after every match is gap to the bottom 3.  That won’t change.

My concern with Doc taking a penalty is that he can hardly shoot with any consistency.

Aside from the odd goal (4 in 43 L1 games - starting the season as a No 10), it's either a dribble or a conversion.

That concern about results masking the reality is underlined reading Jones comments about it being thoroughly deserved and we had real control. I felt we were fortunate to win and really 2 underwhelming home draws against midtable sides is what we deserved from the last 4 days.

Hope we can get a positive result at Wrexham and then get a well earned international rest before we return against saints, typically we fare better against those sort of sides performance wise but who knows what they’ll be like under new management..
I think we lose a bit of perspective here. If a year ago you were to tell me that we would be picking up drawers against Swansea and then West Brom (who let’s not forget have been in the play offs/challenging for the play offs last two seasons) I wouldn’t have used the word underwhelming.

Cool. Are they to put in the cupboard end?

Absolutely no chance we keep hold of Lloyd Jones in the Jan window at this rate. Prem scouts can't be blind to what he's been doing this season. The bloke is a fucking one man defensive colossus
Absolutely no chance we keep hold of him, really? Personally, I think the opposite. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s brilliant for us, but I’d be amazed if a Premier League team came in for a 30 year old defender who’s spent most of his career in the lower divisions. He’d have to perform like this for at least a whole season to get maybe one of the promoted teams interested.

Any striker worth their salt would kill to take a pen. The fact that Leaburn and TC (in training presumably) dont feel that they want tells you something.

Must say that on the first half showing, we were being run all over the park by them, but for all their pressure and possession, they created the sum total of naff all, and our defence did their stuff as per, second half we were a bit more involved, and when Carey got the ball in the last minute, I thought that he was gonna do exactly what he did, and yes, the ball did take a slight deflection, but the keeper cannot blame that for the goal, he was just poor in his reactions, but who cares, we scored and that's that 1-0 up to 5th, thank you very much.
Regarding the penalty, I am wondering if Doc took the pen as captain because no-one else fancied taking it...

Are the youngest worried about the abuse they would get on social media if they missed the penalty and we lost the game 0-1.

Poor first half but second half much better. Subs were at the right time and made a real difference. All round fantastic I’m not criticising anyone as it’s about the whole team which is doing brilliant. Well done to everyone even the players not used you can see the unity in the whole squad. Nathan Jones knows what he’s doing for sure.  COYR.

Every player has a price. The key is to sell at the right time, and have excellent recruitment to replace them. Brentford built themselves up into a solid PL club by buying AND selling brilliantly.

Losing Fullah in January would be a shame, but wouldn't affect our team and survival/promotion prospects much. Indeed it's possible that if we reinvested the money wisely it could strengthen our team in the second half of the season, replacing an 18year old "wonderkid" with proven Championship players.

Losing Jones would be completely different. He is the rock around which our superb defensive setup is built. Him and Carey at the moment are the 2 irreplaceable members of the squad.
