Don’t expect too much from the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. It really is a small exhibit !kafka said:I’m planning Sri Lanka for February. Anyone got any recommendations?
All joking aside great place to go and all worth seeing.Galle was an impressive beach area but the rolling hills / green landscape is stunning too.0 -

I’ve always felt I should try a cruise, thanks for the recommendation!Covered End said:I’m in the middle of a luxury Caribbean cruise with Silversea.
We paid for everything upfront.
I can’t fault it in anyway.
You can drink champagne every waking moment if you choose and also be eating the finest of foods.
You have a butler to attend to your every need.
I’ve seen some mention the Celebrity cruises as the best, but we’ve been moored alongside them a few times and that is chav central by comparison.
If you want the best and are willing to pay for it I recommend Silversea.
The amount of staff equals the 300 guests and many of the staff know your name.
The impeccable customer service leaves me speechless.
We went on our first one early this year - and it won't be our last!1 -
Working in the same game as you (did)?bobmunro said:A couple of road trips in the planning stage - Northumberland coast and the West Coast of Scotland.Otherwise fairly flexible as our eldest is relocating to Malta in the spring and will be there for a few years at least. We will visit fairly regularly - don't want our grandchildren growing up too quickly between visits, and may look at property there as well.Maybe a med cruise at some point, although may wait until winter here for a Caribbean option.0 -
Only done Colombo and Kandy … both great but very different.redlanered said:
Great place, and good time of year to go. You're probably clued up on the big sights like https://www.sigiriya.info/, Yalla, Adam's Peak, trains up to Kandy and Ella - all great to do.kafka said:I’m planning Sri Lanka for February. Anyone got any recommendations?
Galle likewise probably in your sights already. S coast resorts are enjoyable, if a little touristy. We liked Bentota also as another laid back coastal stop.
Colombo quite ok to visit but few big 'sights' so nor worth staying there long. If you do go there, check out prices at the Galle Face Hotel - reasonably affordable for the colonial experience.
Good to buy stuff like shirts, shorts in the better chain and independent stores - good quality and made in SL.
Food is brilliant. As you say, the food is superb … and the people are great, wonderful to meet.0 -

Not visited Botswana, but we travelled to Tanzania with this company and they do tours to Botswana. They were very good for our Tanzania safari:Athletico Charlton said:I may have asked on a previous holiday thread but.. has anyone done a safari in Botswana and is there any way to do so on a sensible budget.
It's pretty much the number one destination I would like to visit, but I have a family of 4 of us to pay for and the quotes I got so far (admittedly from a small bespoke agent), ranged from £22K+ without flights which is not even remotely possible... Maybe one of those places I will never make I guess.
Don't need expensive lodges or anything like that.

I'm the same but always worried about the possibility of sea-sickness.Rob7Lee said:

I know the cruise ships are huge but both my wife and I have had bad experiences on ferries. The last time we got the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander (I know it's not a cruise ship) I felt really ill and my wife, for about 2 weeks after, felt like she was walking on sponges. It wasn't even that bad a crossing but, to be honest, I used to get sea-sick on the Woolwich Ferry!
The thought of feeling ill and being stuck on a ship for a long period of time has always put me off.0 -
In that case, I strongly recommend The Queen Mary. A proper ocean liner, the ride is as smooth as you like. Other than the wonderful scenery passing by, you wouldn't know you were on a ship. You don't even know when it's going through a storm it's so smooth.superclive98 said:

Aside from the obvious of climate and fantastic beaches etc.Stig said:
Great food, some of the friendliest people, always felt very safe there, a lot of history to explore, the mountains (I have actually skied there! Mount Olympus up in the Troodos), mountains are amazing and really are a must visit.
they also drive on the proper side of the road!!!
it’s one of the ex British colonies so has that clear connection.
im also lucky to have made new friends there and do have connections to a family business (my grandfather was a fruit importer and was actually there when war broke out in 74).
its clearly not necessarily the best place on earth (as depends what best of you are comparing), but it’s certainly my happy place and I think for short haul beach type holiday it’s hard to beat, can get a bit hot in the height of summer though!!2 -
We are planning on Japan in the spring and the Galapagos and Ecuador in the autumn. Plus I have a bonus music tour of the USA with a pal just after the World Cup finishes!0

Thanks very much. Great answer, I've got the I wants now!Rob7Lee said:

Planning a trip to Rome for my daughter's birthday in early January. In March we are off to Porto. Possibly a lake house holiday in Arkansas in July (have a friend who lives there), a birthday celebration in the Caribbean (location TBD) for September and a trip to New York to see some other friends.0

Just booked Belek for end of May. 27 Hole golf course on site too. Lovely.0

Just in case you weren't aware (as many who were in Jamaica a few weeks ago weren't), it is Atlantic hurricane season from July to November (with the peak in September and most from mid-August to mid-October) - with the northern-most Caribbean most at riskChunes said:Planning a trip to Rome for my daughter's birthday in early January. Worth looking at St George Beach Hotel & Spa Resort in Paphos. We were there in October and will be again in June. Plenty of dining options and bars with the Sunset Bar lovely at that time. In addition, you reserve your sunbed for the duration of your stay so no fighting over that!Stig said:

Worth knowing but don’t let it change your plans - I have travelled to Florida and the Caribbean countless times in this period and have never been disrupted. You’d be extremely unlucky. Just book an ATOL protected trip to ensure you are covered just in case, and take out travel insurance from when you book, not from when you are due to travel.Chunes said:

We did the day trip to Cairo from Sharm about 18 years ago. Loved the pyramids and the Egyptian museum but not sure I’d want to stay in Cairo tbh.2121 said:Egypt pyramids cairo and luxor - anyone been?! Hotel recommendations please, it’s like a minefield!1 -
We stayed at the Mena House Oberoi many moons ago. It’s right at the foot of the pyramids and filled with history.2121 said:Egypt pyramids cairo and luxor - anyone been?! Hotel recommendations please, its like a minefield!

It was on my mind as have dealt with the FCDO end of things many times; Irma & Maria spring immediately to mind. Also my colleague was telling me the other day about her first trip to the Caribbean - she got caught up in JamaicaSporadicAddick said:

Am looking at Croatia for the summer. 1 week exploring the islands. Any recommendations?0
-
We stayed on Kolocep twice this year, May and October. That's a measure of how much we liked it, we've never gone back to the same place before - at least, not without years in-between. You can easily get to Lopud, Suđurađ and Dubrovnik on the ferry which is very cheap and very reliable. There are excursions to other places, I can particularly recommend the Lake Kotor one. Kolocep itself is beautiful and the hotel great. It's definitely a holiday for older people though. I'd say if you're 50+ or if you're a quieter type person without kids, it would be fantastic. If you're young, noisy or crave endless excitement, you might prefer to try somewhere else.jamescafc said:Am looking at Croatia for the summer. 1 week exploring the islands.
