Welling United - What is going on?

The area is crying out for a Bexley superclub.stop_shouting said:Erith town, Erith and Belvedere, welling Utd, welling town. Just doesn’t sound sustainable.0 -
At least we didn’t lose 6-1 today!1

Might need Robert Maxwell to sort that one outSheedyCAFC said:At least we didn’t lose 6-1 today!0 -
Regarding Welling, ever since Goldberg handed the reigns to Howard Prosser, it has turned to shit.
A bloke hoping for a return by building around the ground, not getting quite what he hoped for.
Complete lack of knowledge of how to run a club. Badly guided there on in.
The best that can happen is that they fall into administration, try and sever ties with E&B as paying wholly for both teams to play there is not sustainable.A lot of clubs at this level get help from local councils.
They need to bite the bullet, be prepared to move/share with another club, and hand the keys back.
Either that, or someone with deep pockets, steps in.
Perhaps a premier league player could donate a weeks wage?
I won’t hold my breath.0 -
Is the number of clubs in outer SE London/northwest Kent that unusual? I'm pretty sure it's a similar situation across outer east London/Essex and outer SW London/Surrey too.
Cray Wanderers seem to be doing well now they have Flamingo Park, our old pals at Cray Valley PM seem in good health too. And we haven't even mentioned Phoenix Sports and VCD yet, playing almost next door to each other!
With Welling United, it seems to be a mixture of years of bad management (that whole episode with the flats was just bizarre) and the fact that both us and Millwall have been doing well, so there is less of a floating walk-up support on a Saturday.
Hopefully they can turn it round and someone can find a vision for that club - and get some finance/grant funding to sort that ground out.3 -
I went over for the youth match against Dulwich a couple of months back - it's a cracking set-up there.AFKABartram said:

Great finish for one of Billericay’s half dozen yesterday.

I went for the first time a few weeks ago v Margate. Nice little ground and the people working there were really welcoming. Got chatting buying golden goal tickets and when they found out it was my first visit they gave me a run down on where the bogs and bars were etc. I shall pop down again when Charlton games allow. Who is the aforementioned Dev?InspectorSands said:

Turn it in FFS, have you seen how hard it is for non-league to survive?
Especially where you have a ground with zero potential for expansion.
Yes the chairman has made mistakes, but he has swallowed a loss of just shy of £1 million in the process.
To survive in non-league you need a revenue stream away from gate receipts.
With Welling being so compact, I see no solution.
A 4G would provide a possible cash generator, but it needs everything that runs with it (changing rooms - condemned two years ago. Floodlights - one caught fire recently). The list is endless.
None of these are fuck ups by others, just a simple fact that they don’t have a couple of million knocking about.

So sad to see the demise of Welling Utd. There’s been too much water under the bridge since John Bartley was banging them in for fun and the high profile FA Cup tie at PVR versus Blackburn Rovers.5

A school friend of mine was Nigel Ransom who played over 1,000 games for Welling all the way back to the mid 1970s. If my memory serves me right he has to take time off from school one day to play at Maine Road against Man City in the FA Youth Cup which was unheard of in those days for a non-league club. He lives in Otford now but I haven't seen him for years and I would love to know what he makes of things at Welling right now.0

Seems like a lifetime ago when Bexleyheath & Welling had the only non league side in the South East Counties league playing against the likes of Chelsea, Charlton, Arsenal etc.
After it became Welling I remember a 17 year old Steve Brown having a certain Andrew Cole in his pocket during a Charlton v Arsenal reserves match.
It must have hit them hard in the pocket when we stopped playing pre season games at Park View and I wish them well in their quest for survival.

Didnt Tony Adams play a game at Welling which was his first game after getting out of prison for his drink driving incident? So there was a lot of press there for that?0

Well it would be a lifetime for a lot on here, Bexleyheath & Welling FC changed their name to Bexley United in 1963. I started going to see B&W with my Dad when I was about 5 & a few years later started going on my own. For some bizarre reason I used to hang around after games collecting autographs of all these part time players that I had never heard ofStarinnaddick said:Seems like a lifetime ago when Bexleyheath & Welling had the only non league side in the South East Counties league playing against the likes of Chelsea, Charlton, Arsenal etc.

. Bexley United went bust in 1976 & Welling United moved into Park View Road a year later. I actually played a few games for Welling when they were still playing in parks but I wasn't good enough. 3 -

Yes Cup fever hit Welling, my Dad was stopped in the street by a film crew who asked a couple of questions about the forthcoming game (not sure if it was BBC or ITV) & was on the news that night. I think Welling only lost 1-0 if I remember correctly ?meldrew66 said:So sad to see the demise of Welling Utd. Clubs at this level need to be good places to go to socially, so that people go there for more than just the football. Being able to sell beer around the ground, and having decent beer and food can make a big difference.
Dulwich Hamlet are obviously the extreme example, but other non league grounds I've been to are better than Welling and indeed Dartford for this. St Albans had decent beer available (Mad Squirrel) from various stalls around the ground, and indeed Chicken George.1 -
Nigel turned down Wimbledon when they joined the Football League because he didn't think it was worth it given he had a career at Barclays and was on "boot money" at Welling.Covered End said:

Well it's a fucking long way to go Nathan if you're just going to leave me on the bench. I'll do it if I get at least 30 mins.R0TW said:

My first footballing hero was Stan Howe, Bexleyheath and Wellings keeper.Always stood behind his goal which meant changing ends at half time. This would be about 1960-62. Happy days. And then one day when B&W didn't have a game I went to the Valley, Jan 1962 4th Round FA Cup against Derby County.................................................................3

One of my favourite grounds (St Albans). lovely town, nice walk through the park to the ground. friendly supporters, decent beer on every corner of the ground and easy Thameslink train.killerandflash said:Clubs at this level need to be good places to go to socially, so that people go there for more than just the football. Ticks all the boxes.
Those containerised bar shops they have are simple, but very efficient.
Funny how one side of the ground has a two hour parking restriction behind it. So everyone who parks there, piles in at KO.1 -
I reformed Erith Town in 2017, after it was on it's knees and about to fold.charlton4ever said:

Started it all in my Falconwood garden office from literally nothing and each season we made steady progress to getting promotion in 2023/24 to the Isthmian League. We also won the league cup and Kent Senior Trophy that season too.
Our youth pathway is probably one of the strongest in the area (4 played on Tuesday evening in our 7-1 win in London Senior Cup).
Typically, Charlton losing to Hanwell in the LSC meant The Dockers didn't get the chance to beat them at home in the next round. Only Charlton eh.We have had absolutely no help from anyone of the senior clubs in the area and the football authorities, not that I am bitter.
I moved to a village near Newmarket in August, but continue to finance the club as I love it.
Am going Cov on Saturday with my two boys and am doing Norwich on Boxing Day.Should've done a book or documentary on it all, but I just love the football really.27 -

This brought back memories of my youth watching B&W. I think the time you mentioned was about the time they changed their name to Bexley United. They regularly had attendances of 1500/2000 and had a very good team. I recall when Stan howe played other players were George Fisher, Brian Taylor (Essex cricketer), Tommy Nekrews, Gerry Morgan, Colin(?) Saunders, Terry Gill, Roy Johnson, Brian Kelly. Do you remember any of these names?1 -
Have absolutely no love for Welling after the Hobbins brothers tried to shaft my old man years ago when we made their kits
