Anyone been narrow boating? Looking to do a weekend in late September. Preferably somewhere with a countryside feel, where we can do a boat-driven pub crawl. There will be five of us.

Been in Auckland since January 3rd, had some brilliant private tours which which we never done before, they were really worth the cost, so nice to have a guide to yourselves who actually changed the tour to suit our preferences, made if much more interesting and learnt so much history. Will be joining a cruise ship on the 12th for a 61 night cruise to Tokyo, arriving so much earlier than the cruise departure means we are totally relaxed and ready to be totally spoilt.0

1. Very slow. So need to bear in mind timings to get somewhere specific
2. You cannot moor just anywhere. So berths at riverside pubs etc may not be available

Ive given up the booze after forty years , gave a partner 20 years younger than me ( I’m 57) who doesn’t drink loads but likes to go out and dance sometimes ….. recommendations for places holidays that are not booze focussed , watm /hot and beach based please0

Any advice much appreciated.We live by a canal and there's a marina with boat hire 300 yds from the house - so we thought it would be rude not to!It's a few years ago now and we hired a boat Friday to Monday, me, the missus and another couple. Observations, echoing some of what @valleynick66 said:- we had our instruction session before we left, especially how to deal with locks and lift bridges - all seemed straightforward but when we got to the first lock we looked at each other in a "what the f*ck do we do now?" way. Thankfully there was someone there to advise. After that first one it was fine but the stairway locks are a challenge.- Get a boat big enough for your party, but not too big - the the longer the boat the harder the locks are.- There are very few pubs along the way that have mooring spots, but it's easy to moor up not that far away and just walk along the tow path.- The boats are very cramped, but that's part of the fun I suppose.- It is a very slow pace, which is fine and relaxing when on the longer level stretches. We left the marina at about 4.00pm on the Friday, stopped at 8.00pm and moored overnight by a pub, and then off first thing on the Saturday morning, arriving at our Saturday stop at about 6.00pm.I checked when we got back and after about 12 hours of actually moving we had covered just 19 miles!- The locks and lift bridges are hard work!Overall it was fairly enjoyable but would be unlikely to do it again!1 -

River boats are wider and can be a bit more spacious.I live near the Thames (Henleyish) and there are plenty of riverside pubs all the way up to Oxford but overnight mooring fees can be a pain - here they are about 15 quid for a 24 hour period, though it's a popular stretch. I suspect other parts of the river are much cheaper. Plenty to see between say Windsor and Oxford and being on the river gives you a completely different perspective.Broads are lovely, especially if you get decent weather, but more rural and less going on by the rivers.

Our favourite is Llangollen, which is amazing when you go over the aqueduct. Although, I think you may not access it by September due to the damage recently.
Note, that you really don't want 6 people in a 6 berth. The middle bedroom is a corridor to the toilet.
The best trip we had was when we went with friends and hired 4 boats, although finding places to stop can be a problem.
We've only been out of season, I'd never want to wait for locks or one way sections for hours.
Take waterproofs as you steer on the open. Dont worry about dressing up, you wont get the chance.
Be sure to go very slowly past other boats, as you may end up in a punch up if you cause someone's plates to smash on the floor, or their hot tea in their lap.

I've never done narrow boating, but I have canoed over the Llangollen Viaduct and it is absolutely amazing - incredible structure with fabulous views. The one piece of advice I can give though is that everyone on the river has to pay the same amount for their licence and and everyone has the same right to be there, so please be cautious and patient; many other boaters including canoeists will also be novices. Enjoy!

Haven’t done any narrow boating but I have rented boats on the Norfolk Broads and the Thames. My Dad also had a boat a few years ago which we used a lot on the Thames.
Boating is great fun and if you do it right very relaxing.
There’s lots of riverside pubs and restaurants along the Thames and on the Broads and Most will let you Moor overnight if you eat or drink in.

7 of us hired a boat on the broads for a week about 35 years ago.
Managed to get through an ounce and a half of puff and god knows how many beers. Seemed to me, we stopped at every pub we came across.
When we go back to the yard, I misjudged it when reversing into the berth and smacked against the side. A guy in the boat next to us was shouting and screaming at us. I told him to go f**k himself and mind his own business. Turned out, he worked at the yard and had to check the boat for damage and determine whether we got our deposit back or not. We didn’t get it5 -

I think it’s a piss take that you are required to have an ESTAS even for transferring through USA. I was flying to Mexico City via Dallas and had to pay for an ESTAS. I Wasn’t staying and swapping planes!PrincessFiona said:
