MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs Oxford United - Saturday 20th December 2025: 3pm Kick-Off
Charlton Athletic vs Oxford United
Saturday 20th December 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Elliot Bell
Introduction
When your team has lost five games on the trot its easy to wonder where the next result is going to come from, obviously said team isn't going to lose forever, but just look at the likes of Southampton in the 2024/25 season, who went a whole season with two solitary wins. Of course the Premier League is a bit different compared to the Championship, yet the same type of logic appears, losing after all can become a very bad habit that's difficult to shake... So when the Addicks finally earnt a deserved draw at St. Andrews last Saturday, it helped stopped the rot... Now we'll see if we've started to turn the corner, and potentially just at the right moment.
The Opposition
Name: Oxford United (22nd) - Manager: Gary Rowett
Ground: Kassam Stadium
Previous League Result: Oxford 1-2 Preston
Next up at the Valley will be fellow relegation strugglers: Oxford United, and if I understand the importance of this result accordingly, the losers will be instantly relegated back down to League One... Well maybe I've exaggerated that just a tad... Of course the result will be important, defeat this coming Saturday will be annoying, and will make our job slightly harder, but given there have been times in the past where we've been "relegated" in March, and out of the "Play-Offs" in January... there is the reminder that nothing is over until its over.
Oxford though will certainly be looking to avoid the dreaded second season syndrome, having been promoted to the Championship via. the Play-Offs at the end of the 2023/24 season. It was their first season in the second tier since 1998-99, and their exile from the Championship has been long, and involved plenty of suffering with three seasons in the National League. Finally though they returned to this tier, and put in a good showing, ending up a respectful 17th, and four points off the relegation zone. Not bad for a side who achieved a solitary four points across ten games this time a year ago.
Survival might be a big ask this time around though, Oxford didn't exactly strength in the Transfer Market over the summer, just the three permanent signings, whilst their top scorer from last season (Mark Harris with six goals), has yet to get off the mark this time around, hey we can relate mate!! - Oxford themselves come into this match with a solitary win in the last nine games (a recent 2-1 home win over Ipswich), but four of those matches have ended all square.
Gary Rowett after all knows how to get results at this level, and will not want to go down as a Manager who got his side relegated in December
Strap yourselves in for another tough Saturday afternoon in the Championship... There are no easy matches at this level
Charlton Team News
The comparisons from this season, to the 2024/25 season for Charlton Athletic are quite remarkable... After all November and December are historically a poor period for the Addicks, but as we saw 12-months ago, they don't define our season. Also a year ago, there were arguments that Tyreece Campbell shouldn't be playing, an argument that wasn't helped by the fact that he didn't find the scoresheet until the 21st December... That comparison was so close to being mirrored this time around (Just a week earlier this time around), with the not-a-Striker finally breaking his duck, and earning us the draw at St. Andrews
The odd question now though... Is Campbell better utilisied from the bench? - Given that two of his best performances this season have been as a substitute - Either way we should thankfully have reinforcements this coming Saturday, with two injured players (unsurprisingly not mentioned) returning from injury. If I had to hazard a guese that'll be Amari'i Bell and Charlie Kelman, given the rumour on CharltonLife last weekend, and will be welcome returns... Whether they're thrown straight back into the eleven remains to be seen, but once again... the timing couldn't be better!!
Kaminski
Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey
Bree - Coventry - Anderson - Fullah
Carey
Campbell - Kelman
Substitutes Bench: Mannion - Bell - Apter - Costello - Docherty - Knibbs - Berry - Olaofe - Leaburn

Defo start anderson. Maybe same team as last time out altho he’ll likely start TC (which is fair enough)Id like to see Laq given a go (came on against brum), altho maybe not the game as must win2

First goal (if there is one) is huge in this game, that team will go on and get a result.I have watched Oxford a few times this season and even when they’ve won they have been pretty awful - very similar style to us but imo worse. This one needs to be 3 points on the board for me, as this is our easiest home game left of the season.I think it will be 1-1 though.0

Three points required against a club who we don’t have the best league record against at the Valley. (One win from the last Six)
Hopefully this time Jones has learned his lesson about bringing back players from injury too quickly after what happened to Bell at Coventry.Whoever the 2 who are supposedly good to go will be on the bench and bring them on if required for the minutes they can go at this stage. We have 5 games over the next 2 weeks and a day so we require everyone to be as fit as they can be.Last home game before Christmas is notoriously one of the lowest attended of the season and can’t see this one being any different especially now the Chelsea tickets are up and on sale
As always looking forward to it with a few beers and glad we are back to a 3pm kick off12 -
Absolutely massive game. I'd go unchanged from Birmingham, starters all did their jobs and substi..sorry Nathan, finishers made an impact too. Hopefully a couple of returning names on the bench to get a run out in the second half and help us tie up a victory8

The next three are cup finals. 2-1 win to us3

I would definately stay with the same team that drew at Birmingham. Bring Campbell on around 70 minutes - he always seems much more effective off the bench.7

He’s lost his goal scoring cherry now. Play him from the start.CafcWest said:I would definately stay with the same team that drew at Birmingham. Bring Campbell on around 70 minutes - he always seems much more effective off the bench.3 -

The data doesn't lie, a win by one goal:

Fairly optimistic here, home win, 2-0.1

First huge game of the season. If Bell is fit and ready then I'm confident, if not then we'll just have to make sure we've got our finishing boots on and shut up shop effectively. We are a decent side going through a bad patch, we can definitely beat them but we absolutely must not lose2
-
If we press them and attack with pace I'm quietly confident but if we play Leaburn up top on his own and default to pumping aimless balls in his general direction it's going to be a long afternoon.5
-
win tomorrow and take a bit of pressure off the next 2 aways - lose and they become very tough.
I think we'll sneak it 2-11 -
As things stand, this is Bree's last home game for us?0

What do you mean? I thought this WAS the 2024/25 season ...
Anyway, whatever season it is ... (un)comfortable home win, 1-04 -
- After winning seven consecutive league games against Oxford between 1993 and 1998, Charlton have won just one of their last 14 against the Us since 2016 (D5 L8).
- Oxford have won four of their last seven away league games against Charlton (D2 L1), having been winless in their first 15 visits between 1968 and 1997 (D7 L8).
- Charlton have lost five of their last six Championship matches (D1). Since the first game in this run on 8th November, no side have picked up fewer points than the Addicks in the competition (1 – level with Sheffield Wednesday).
- Oxford have won just one of their last nine Championship matches (D4 L4), with that one victory coming at home (2-1 v Ipswich). Since the start of November, only Sheffield Wednesday (0) have won fewer matches than them (1) in the competition.
- Brian De Keersmaecker leads all Oxford players for assists (4) and chances created (31) in the Championship this season. 19 of his chances created have come from set plays, with only Coventry’s Matt Grimes (28) registering more in the division.

Great preview as always FA.
This game will not decide our season but without a doubt this is the most important game so far.
We managed to stop the run of losses at Birmingham last Saturday and now it's time to get back to winning ways.
This game really is a must win and if we can secure 3 points it should set us up nicely for the Xmas fixtures.
2.1 Charlton and the Valley faithful can go home in a positive mood.1 -
Bell in the back three, Oloafe and Kelman up top and Fullah alongside Carey (and he will score!)0
-
I can’t see Kelman going straight into the XI. Hopefully Anderson and Tanto start. Have to win at least two of the next three games.4
