I continued expecting the worst for the first 30 minutes, when we hardly got into their half and but for Kaminsky (definite number one - sorry to those advocating Mannion).
As for the second half, not quite expecting the worst but never particularly confident. So many tactics I just didn't understand. A break was always on the cards with a mere one goal lead. We really miss a midfielder that can put his foot on the ball and pick an attacking pass. And why not leave a man forward for corners and long throws when you have a man advantage. They lose a man as well when you do that and the odds are slightly more in the defence's favour with 9 against 7 than 10 against 8.
A win is a win it didn't feel like a good win.

If you think today was rubbish, just have a listen to Chris wilder after the game , what an absolute bell 🔔 end , honestly it will cheer you up .1

It would be hard to play that badly again, but not impossible. We got some good results early in the season but only one where we really played well, against Blackburn. Our other wins were based on a tough defence, which once it got hit by injuries, exposed the midfield and forwards as inadequate.TheHerminator said:
It’s mad isn’t it.Garrymanilow said:We’ve gone from ‘I’ll take 21st any way possible’ at the start of the season to whining about winning very quickly, well done everyone. We’ve gained ground on Oxford, West Brom and Blackburn today while beating a team who I don’t think we expected to get 6 points off this season all without a functional LWB and missing some key players. I’ll definitely take it. It’s a good dayAlso people seem to have forgotten how well we played at the start of the season and assume we can never regain any of that form.
a football season is ups and downs. More downs than ups recently but we won’t play that poorly again this year I’ll bet
Our best bet for survival is that Bell/ Edwards are back in the side soon and the rest of our semi-crocked defenders manage a semblance of fitness. Either that or we bring a fit player in. If we are relying on the midfield of Berry, Doc, JRC, Anderson ( never again) Knibbs and Carey then we are done for.0 -
It was awful, truly awful, in the first half and as I have said previously we deserved to be 3 or 4 down.AFKABartram said:

I’d rather highlight that despite what was on offer, the fans continued to sing Nathan Jones red and white army throughout. At the end of the game, the team felt embarrassed to celebrate and there were no fist pumps. The manager scarpered quickly. Our goal keeper was man of the match in a game we played against 9 men for more than half of it. The away team got a standing ovation from their fans.It was awful. Everyone is hugely thankful for the three points, particularly given other results, but we’ll see in the next few games whether the double sending off was just the bit of fortune we’ve been needing, or a very temporary papering over the cracks.
The second half was different and once we got the goal we didn't need to play expansive football, even if we were only against 9 men, we needed to win.
I found the attitude of the crowd frustrating. We wouldn't win any points for scoring another goal or two but we may concede a goal and drop points. We needed to be pragmatic and in the main, we were.2 -
When we are deep into injury time with only one or two phases of play left, the 9 men get a chance to launch a long throw deep into our box. It’s a leveller, anything can happen with these long throws, makes no difference if you have 9 or 11.Can anyone think the logical thing to do was to take off 6ft 7 Leaburn from defending it for Godden?? particularly when we had stopped trying to score a goal 10 mins earlier.16

A win's a win be it against 11 or 9 .. The 'Blood Stained Blades' have i m o a better squad than us, but it reflects their manager, a gnarled, old fashioned clogger bereft of any style or class
Next game v Derby is important. Obviously a win takes us further up the table. Derby are in stuttering form and are there for the taking0 -
I now remember why I don’t read
post match threads often anymore. We are not Brazil, not pretty to watch but 4 point against Coventry and Sheffield United!!!!!!!!14 -

Unless they were concerned he was in the injury “red zone”, then I agree - that was a weird sub. Yes Kaminski played well, but when your keeper is your best player, that's hardly something to celebrate.1 -

That match tells us a lot about the rest of our season. Nathan very defensive in his post match comments (Northampton 2 years ago etc).
9 men defending their box like crazy and we are still passing it backwards.Awful stuff to watch.1 -
Football is a results business. We just been promoted to Championship, how are we meant to play tika taka 6 months in? Need to focus on staying up. Look at Millwall 10 years or so in the Championship building a base for a promotion push that they are doing now. Expecting too much too soon imojimmymelrose said:

Lee Bowyer didn't have a tenth of this luck.
Poor perfomance but a great result and it's results not performances that count.
Was never gonna be pretty this year and we're a league one squad that just needs to punch above another 3 sides to see it out no matter how ugly.
Jones and the boys are doing at great job as evidenced by the league position which I'd have bitten your hand off for in August.
Keep the faith. We're doing far far better than I hoped/ expected at start of the season.0 -
Big shout out to Kaminski who made two unbelievable saves before Sheff United capitulated with the two red cards! Less said about the performance but we got the job done against a very good Sheffield United team, who even with 9 men, looked decent and defended well against our tepid attacks.1

To be honest the more NJ gets the arsehole with us fans the better, because we seem to play better when that happens, he needs the them and us mentality.2

You got a lol for this but you are not wrong. Most of his passes to Clarke were behind him, not in front, and slowed momentum. Anderson was the same. Lack of footballing brains out there today.mr.se7 said:Aside from other points made…I thought that Ramsey balls to Clarke repeatedly killed momentum today. Passing to his heels rather than slightly in front of him with lots of forward space slowed everything. Not only player to do so btw and we all have off days, just the one I can remember.4 -
I don’t think it was clear as Jones had never adopted a weekend / midweek squad utilising strategy, even over a congested Xmas period. Derby are also above Sheff U in the league so it was hardly a Arsenal / Wolves conundrumManic_mania said:

Agreed - NJ was as frustrated as we were with our inability to pass the ball a few yards, or to play it in front of the receiving player on the move. He was going loopy on the touchline.killerandflash said:
Rodwell needs to have a quiet word with NJ. The frustration in the crowd, with us hanging on to a narrow 1-0 lead was entirely justified.fenaddick said:
I get what he’s saying. We are nowhere near the level of other clubs in this league but it isn’t too much to expect our players to show some confidence and get the basics right. As the home team it is difficult to accept the first half an hour today.0 -
Jones is out to lunch if he’s unhappy with the fans, but we also know his skin is paper thin sometimes and he uses that sense of indignation to fuel himself. I wouldn’t read too much into it.
We’ve been in a bit of a hole recently so I can’t blame him too much for reverting to type and focussing on the basics and being compact and hard to break down first. Debatable how well that was working today, though, until the sending offs.
My worry is we are going too far in that direction though. Early season we continued to look like the Charlton we saw post Northampton away last season. Increasingly we are starting to look like early 2024/25 Charlton and the football is becoming turgid. In terms of tactics, approach, shape, and individual form, we do seem to have lost our way and things have started to become a bit muddled. This has been partly characterized by a fair amount of chopping and changing of the team (not all of which has been enforced) which I think has also unsettled us a bit too. Our intense press has been a bit absent and, without it, teams are finding it pretty easy to defend against us. I can’t believe all our problems are solely down to the left back issue, although it does remain a huge problem.
Jones has huge credit and I would retain him even if we go down, but I think he and the team need a bit of a reset of mindset and approach.7 -

Wow!Redshift said:One of the worst performances in more than 60 years watching Charlton. Gifted the win. First half a complete shambles. I can take we have lesser players but the complete lack of any organisation is incredible. Everything we do is off the cuff. No plan at all. I support the team
and always will. Support does not equal winning. But no sense of approach is unacceptable.
I didn’t see the match. Was it that bad? I find it hard to believe that organisation and lack of approach/ plan is the problem.
All I can say is that if I were a neutral and saw the result of this match knowing that the away team played the whole second half with 9 men, I’d be saying that the home team must be shit.
Having seen what I have this season, it confirms to me not that we are overall shit, but that our attack is shit and our manager has the most killjoy approach possible.
Can anyone argue that with 11 against 9, they were the 'best version of themselves’?
I can’t bear anymore to watch us because of our turgid football. I’ll keep tracks on here and elsewhere, and hope NJ can do it but I don’t like his football. It’s like going out to eat at a Mexican restaurant and being served Doritos.1 -
And that last point is what NJ did not address in his interview.Chunes said:Posting without reading. I felt like tonight was probably a night to stay off of CL because of the inevitably obvious car crash between the optimists and the realists. But oh well, let's not pretend this site isn't an addictive dopamine hook that can be avoided.
I thought we were so incredibly lucky to not be 4 - 0 down early on the first half. Kaminski singlehandedly kept us in it. It took two sendings off for us to scrape the win.
It's so weird that we won, and yet it's the first day of the season that I thought to myself... We really could go down. I hadn't thought it was a possibility before today. I genuinely thought we had enough. But now, I'm really not sure.1 -
At the end of the day would you rather lose often in exciting games and get relegated or win ugly and stay up? I know what I’d prefer and that isn’t watching League One football next season. I’d also agree with you if we were in our third season back and still seeing the same football. But we won’t. By then we will have evolved and be much better. If we haven’t then NJ will have gone or at least be under severe pressure.jimmymelrose said:

TC is our only attacking outlet, as is always obvious when he is not in the side, as today. He is not perfect but without him we have nothing, sadly.Croydon said:
He's OTT on TC but so are you. He terrorised them with his first touch when he went past his man and won a corner, but then he spent the next 30 mins putting in awful crosses and wasting good field position. He did then have a great run at the death to wind the clock down.superclive98 said:

Ronnie says some bizarre stuff sometimes but that’s a blend and mix of opinions from every other post on here. Don’t see the problem with it
How he can berate TC after that performance is beyond me. He terrorised them and changed the game.
